? I would of, but I would not want to be one of the first soilders in the front of the boats

ZMan 01-14-2002 05:56 AM

I don't know if I would have necessarily liked it, but I wouldn't have hesitated to volunteer.

Do you know how the men got selected?

Bean 01-14-2002 06:01 AM

I would have. Not saying that it was easy for those men and not saying that war is cool or anything but i would have liked to experience what those men went through and death wouldnt be an issue because im not afraid of it.

There may be what tortures you.
There may be what reduces you to silence.
There may be what fails to satisfy you.
There may be what irritates you.
There may be what grieves you.
But man has to train himself by enduring these things.

No. How?

Manny 01-14-2002 06:10 AM

I like my head...and my arms...and my legs. I wouldn't like them to get seperated from my body. That's why, no, I would not have joined up.

01-14-2002 06:23 AM

i would of liked to be the guy in charge!!! That be cool!! Like on Moh:aa I tell some1 to cover the left he saids shut the f#^% up.

My grandfather was there, and he didn't paint a very pretty picture. Imagine a guy you've trained side by side with for months, and fought with get his brains blown all over you. Yah that would have been fun (Note the sarcasm). I wouldn't have liked it, and I don't know if I would have volunteered. I say yes, but the only way one can know what they would do in a circumstance like that is to have it come up and kick them in the ass.

As for selection, If you happened to be in a regiment selected by the SAC, then you went. The Royal Canadian Regiment was the first infantry on the beach to give them a chance at payback for Dieppe. Other than that regiments were chosen based on experience (except for the Americans who at this point had none), availibility (regiments which could be assembled to the staging grounds the quickest were the first to go), and capability (training added with the amount and kind of hardware availible).

anyone who says death wouldn't be an issue and that they're not afraid of it is absolutely crazy. I bet every single man that has went in to the heat of combat has feared death at one time or another.

The only time you should start worrying about a soldier is when they stop bitchin'.

01-14-2002 06:48 AM

Here is a fact though. Almost all of the soilders than got killed did not even fire a shot. It must have sucked to get your leg blown off by a mortar like on Saving Private Ryan.

How the heck did that get posted twice?

Graverobber 01-14-2002 06:51 AM

It happens every once and a while just edit it and write double post

01-14-2002 07:16 AM

I might have but I would have taken cover behind the metal posts on the beach and wait till the way have been cleared and the machine gun posts destroyed.

[EC]Mjr. Winters 01-14-2002 07:31 AM

Hmm i notice many of you said yes... i dont know why...
First of all it depends what beach you landed at, omaha was by far the most violent with over 1400 dead, but i dont think the other ones saw that much action. Ive seen live footage of soldiers walking out of the boat, with a guy dropping to the ground, lifeless, a few times, but nothing serious. I would have like to experience it but only if i had some sort of god mode, because im pretty damn sure i would have been killed, im not lucky very often. Plus, the life expectancy was 6 minutes after the doors opened on the higgins boats.... Another down side would be the horrid scenes like ppl losing limbs, guts torn out, brains poping out, etc,etc...
So no, i wouldnt have volunteered, but i also think you got drafted for such a big operation, i doubt you had i say in this.

01-14-2002 07:35 AM

Ok, lets say you were drafted into the landing of Omaha.
What would you have done?

[EC]Mjr. Winters 01-14-2002 07:38 AM

hmmm, i would have probably played dead until it got a little quiet, but since that counts as deserting, you can be shot for that, so i would have done my duty, gotten the hell outta the boat as fast as i could, probably off the sides, and run for cover behind an X. Then follow smoe guys, i would have never walked through the beach alone.
