The Longest Day
 

For all you history buffs:
What parts of the Longest Day are historically accurate?

Id say the fact that there were Germans and Americans, and that d-day was june 6. I mean, look at the part where the guy is shot because he thinks he hears the cricket, when its really the bolt of a K98. No rifle is supposed to be that loud, or it will really give your position away. But hey, its more historically accurate than SPR oOo:

Are the places they attacked, like the city names, correct?

yup

which countires particapated in the invasion? Great Britian, America, Canada, France(free french forces)...was there anyone else?

the battles (places, people, what went down, etc) are accurate, certain individuals' actions are not (as someone mentioned with the cricket, the thing where the krauts say "bitte bitte" and the Ranger guns them, etc.)

and the G.I.'s walking past that whole group of Germans, theyd be dead in one second

the pegasus bridge part was totall shit, i have been working on a map for moh for about 7 months and im trying to get everything exact to the real thing on 6/6/44 ask me anything about pegasus bridge and ill tell you. example: sandbag bunker (in movie) was a concrete bunker across the road (real life). those wooden planks that they brit paras run on under the bridge to look for explosives (in movie) wherent there. infact the whole bridge wasnt rigged due to the Co of the garrison of the bridge was "afraid of resistance attacks"(real life). i say that part is 40% historically accurate



that part where major pluskat is in his bunker is fake. infact in real life that bunker wasnt finished, in the filming of the longest day they had to remove alot of dirt from the front side of the bunker.

there are loads of stuff thats not accurate in the longest day but remember the movie was made in Hollywood early 60's

Actually, numbnuts, that scene was based on true events.

How about Robert Mitchum parading up and down Omaha Beach in a leather jacket and a cigar, no weapon in hand, saying, "C'mon, soldiers...we gotta take that ridge!!"

It was the single-most retarded scene I have EVER scene in a war movie. He was out in the open on OHAMA FRIGGIN BEACH and drew no fire from the defending germans. Not to mention that his character was a Brig. General! Like there were a lot of those storming the beaches on D-Day...

I thought The Longest Day was absolutely horrible.

there was a brigadier general (don't recall name but I'll get back to you on that) who landed on Omaha actually, and enemy MGs basically couldn't do anything once you got to the seawall, so one could stand next to said wall. The big problem was that all areas were one could get over the seawall were covered with machineguns.


I think 60s Hollywood is more accurate than 90s,

Problem was, in the movie is was parading up and down open beach...nowhere near the seawall. hake:

I really like the Longest Day, its probably my favorite war movie ever, maybe not the most realalistic, but still great.
