build your own server..
whats the minimum requirements for building your own gaming server?
instead of renting one each month, i want to build one. i have a friend willing to host a server for me on a T3 connection. thanks |
How much of that bandwidth is he willing to give you? My server is an AMD Athalon 2G with 256k of ram. I host 8 players and everything runs fine on a cable modem
cool: |
For a server now a days you need at least a 2.0 + CPU and AT LEAST 256 MB of RAM, if not more.
|
you can probably get by on a 1.4 ghz depending on what OS you're going to be using and if there's nothing else running on the system. definately 256 megs at least but you might as well go for 512 just to be safe.
|
thanks guys.. the server i going to build will stricky be a dedicated gaming server.
i think i can get my hands on a 1.7 cpu for cheap, and i'll be using xp pro for my OS. |
i run a server on a p4 1.8 with a gig or ddr memory and a radeon 9700 pro vid card. i have a cable connection. i can host up to 15 players. the trick to that is i also run auto kick with a kick for high ping set at 200. i know thats low but only the fastest comuters with a good connection can hang. it works out pretty well.
|
I don't know how people can afford a T3. How much is it? Couple thousands I heard?
|
u dont need a good vid card to run a server do u??
|
yeah, is a top notch video card crucial?
well it the T3 conection is actually my school. i am take networking at a private computer school in toronto. they always do hosting as well, but their servers can't support a gaming server. but they will host my server if i get one built. |
NO Your server will not be playing the game. Your server will be keeping track of all the players, what and where they are shooting, Where they are moving, a dedecated server will only show the console.
|
oh cool. ya learn something new everday.
i had the feeling that perhaps a video card was important, but i wasnt sure. thanks for clearing that up. biggrin: |
i am very suspicious at the people at oc48gaming.com an OC-48 connection line is a backbone use in major telephone companies and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.. im almost positive their service is a scam eek:

huh. who and what? oOo: |
ok they have a T2 connection, which is still good.
i have a friend who can give me a 1.1 ghz cpu .. i guess that wouldn't be good enough? maybe if i juice it up a bit?? what do you think.. |
it's all good, cause i just got my hands on a 1.4 ghz Athlon xp chip.
done and done... |
Should be ok as long as you have a good vid card and 256 meg of RAM

so was this a joke then? |

so was this a joke then?[/quote:6558d] No, its not a joke. Your cpu should be fine, but I would consider getting at least 512 ram. I am assuming that you are ddr. pc 2100 should be fine (depending on your motherboard) and fairly cheap. |

wt...
oh ok... cause one moment he said having a good video card didn't matter in this situation, and then next he is telling me to make sure i get a good video card. kinda contradicting, dont ya think? i know he is just trying to help out which is appreciated, however, i am confused now. so youre saying forsure a video card is not important for a gaming server?
and by the way, i will be using DDR ram. where i live in toronto, it's dirt cheap right now for DDR. apparently it's something to do with the lack of production of SDR. soon they'll stop making SDR; so i hear. anyways, thanks man. |
Sorry about that, a real good vid card isn't needed on a dedecated server but it will have to meet the mim reqs. If you are using on of the runner programs to launch the game you can set your vid memory down to 16 megs as all you see on the screen is the console. Go ahead and check my server out.

my original plan was to get a motherboard with integraded sound and video. i am sure the integraded vid would be good enough to do the job, right? thanks bro oh well, doesnt really matter. if i need to, i'll just use my vid card. |
Interesting........I just started a dedicated Spearhead server on my 3 year old laptop. PIII 700mhz cpu, 256MB RAM, 8MB video, Windows XP Pro on 20GB hard drive partitioned 10/10, cable modem using 'wireless' network connection. I can host 8 players without any complaints of lag. Use autokick to kick players with ping higher than 500. It has worked out great now for a few weeks. Goes to show a fast pc isn't needed (faster pc's only load maps faster), high end video card isn't needed (console uses no graphics whatsoever), and 256MB RAM seems to be getting the job done. Server initializes in about 15 seconds, and maps change in about 5 seconds on average. Same setup running on my desktop (Athlon XP 2100+, 1GB DDR 333 RAM, 64MB ATI All-in-Wonder 9000 video card, Windows XP Pro on 40GB hard drive) initializes server in 5 seconds and loads maps in less than a second on average. In reality, the only downfall I see in running dedicated server on slower system is takes longer for maps to load. There is a considerable delay. For my circumstances, it works perfectly. I was actually hoping to run it on a dedicated PC 24/7 as my laptop goes with me to work every day and only run the server in the evenings thru the week and 24/2 on the weekends. Guess I'll have to experiment with minimal configurations unless someone out there "REALLY" knows the minimum requirements to run a dedicated server. When I say dedicated, I mean dedicated. The hard drive I use to run the server on my laptop is used for that purpose only. I use a completely different hard drive when I take it to work with me. I want to use a pc for running a moh server and nothing else. Once I get it up and running, I'm not even going to leave a monitor attached. Not needed with WinXP Remote Desktop. Someone please give me your thoughts. If you're curious, look for yourself. Server name is <=-*R.C* Airborn-=> Spearhead Realism Server, ip 68.58.105.12 . Server generally up and running every nite after about 6:00pm. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later. Leave running all weekend long unless I work on Saturday mornings, which is rare.
Feedback appreciated, good or bad. |
oh my
This is an old thread |

Who gives a rats a$$ if it's an old thread? cuss: I'm just looking for some intelligent feedback. That's all........nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks |
