The M1 Carbine fired what was basically a pistol round modified for a rifle. It was underpowered ( a leather jerkin at 50 yards was apparently enough to stop the bullet) and was considered to be almost useless in the field. Many men threw away the carbine and picked up a different one in combat. The pouch seen on the butt of the M1 carbine in SPR contained 2 15 round magazines for the weapon. And yes the Lee Enfield .303 was the finest rifle ever produced.

My grandpa had a lee enfeild in WW2 http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif.

I saw the Enfield in Paris, it looks very similar to the Garan and Carbine

main difference is muzzle velocity in which the m1 garand according to this site is actually higher thus giving it a better penetration rate
http://www.wwa.com/~dvelleux/m1rifle.html
http://www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/leenfld.htm

very similar weapon and a leather jerkin would get shredded at 50 yars by either weapon.

madrebel 01-16-2002 11:51 PM

my mistake i was quote stats from the garand.

here is for the carbine.
http://www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/m1carbin.htm

still a solid weapon. the velocity is similar albeit lower than the enfield. it would still shred a leather jerkin at 50 yards quite easily.

The source for my information comes from a wide range of material including a book by Mark Bando, a well known author on the 101st Airborne division. He says in his book:
" The M1 Carbine proved to be almost useless and unpopular in combat".
He has a website www.101airborneww2.com and often comments on the forum, perhaps you should go and talk to him.
The calibres are the same but you must remember that the bullet that the Garand and Enfield fired was a long rifle type round while the Carbine fired the short pistol type version of the .30-06 round.

maybe i will. ill challenge him to stand 50 yards from me with a leather jerkin and ill fire the carbine into his chest.

1900+ fps velocity i dont know man thats enough to punch through lether at 50 yards pretty easily.

The canadians used the lee enfield also.

Pfc Webster 01-17-2002 12:17 AM

Ok, I admit that the story about the leather jerkin may not reflect absolute reality ( but it did come from another book). The simple fact remains though that the Carbine did not compare performance wise to the Garand or Enfield. I also think its a great weapon in it's own right. Sorry for any offence I caused you.

Sandman 01-17-2002 12:17 AM

Madrebel: Im sorry to inform you that your logic in comparing the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine is completely flawed. In this case, caliber is the least of your worries. The M1 Garand shoots a 210 grain bullet at velocities of 2800 feet/sec and has much more knockdown power that the wimpy carbine round.

In Korea there were dozens of accounts from US GI's stating the exact same thing: They would fire multiple rounds at Chinese and Korean troops only to see puffs of smoke emerge from where the round impacted and the soldier go down. Only problem was that the same soldier would get back up on his feet, wipe himself off and keep charging. Later they found that this was due to the multiple layers of clothing and the Russian web gear worn by these soldiers.

One thing's for sure thought. If they got hit with a Garand round (.30-06), they wouldn't have gotten back up.

Thank you for clarifying the issue and providing me with some support.

Malarkey 01-17-2002 10:25 AM

No he didnt he used an M1 Carbine.

sgt.sayian 01-17-2002 10:26 AM

He used a M1-Carbine http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif, my favourite rifle.

W. Voss 01-17-2002 10:27 AM

Rudolf_007 01-17-2002 10:29 AM

yes indeed.
He used a M1 carbine, with some kind of little pack at the side...

I think this Carbine is soooooo innaccurate.

I prefer 100% the M1903A4 and the power of the BAR...

And speaking of this, they should work on the M1903A1 Unertl....

Mange 01-17-2002 10:29 AM

yep...M-1, pistol, bazooka, and helmet... http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah its the carbine, dunno why people complain about it not being powerfull, 1 pistol round even loaded in the M1 carbine can be just as lethal as the BAR, depends where the shots land.

M1 carbine was the best in WW 2.
