OLD SKOOL CONSOLES
[quote:98806]For a brief period of time, gimmicky controllers became the rage on the NES. The king of them all is Mattel's Power Glove, a device which fits over the user's hand, supposedly allowing direct control of on-screen objects. The problem is that the two games available for the Glove weren’t so hot, although it had its moment to shine with a brief appearance on the arm of rival power player Lucas Barton in the infamous Fred Savage road trip / NES movie, The Wizard.[/quote:98806]
[quote:98806]In 1987, licensee Bandai released a U.S. version of its Famicom peripheral Family Trainer, known here as Family Fun Fitness. This large plastic pad was designed to promote exercise in slothful youth by offering a way to play NES and exercise at the same time. Family Fun Fitness quickly disappeared from stores -- it's rumored it never received a national roll out, in fact, and the FFF title Stadium Events is the rarest licensed NES cart. Nintendo of America later revised the Family Trainer into the Power Pad to address parents' fears that it was creating a nation of fat and lazy NES addicts, and began packing it with systems in late 1988. Stadium Events was also reborn as (the exceedingly common) World Class Track Meet, the Power Pad's pack-in title. A handful of other games such as Dance Aerobics and Short Order / Eggsplode! (a two-in-one cart) were released. It didn't take long to figure out that the best way to play any Power Pad game was to get on all fours and beat the sensors with your fists. It was all downhill from there. After that got boring it was usually time to play SMB2 and eat healthful Doritos.[/quote:98806] [quote:98806]It's not all good, though. The NES cartridge connector is notorious for being easily stretched through normal use, and eventually it becomes difficult and then impossible to properly read cartridges. For some reason, kids across America, myself included, got the idea that blowing into the cartridge slot would fix such problems. Those rubes over at ClassicGaming.com refer to this as the "NES blowjob." My word! [/quote:98806] I cant be the only one who felt they were smart enough to figure out engineering problems being in Middle School. "Dude Double Dragon wont work!" "Well, just blow on it. . ." "No man LICK IT!" "Aren't you supposed to stick it in the freezer" All solutions that were employed at one point or another. Weird thing is. They worked. Secret of Mana was the first RPG I ever played on SNES, and it owned. I skipped school to play it, and skipped church. I loved this game. I can remember the kickass music outside the Cult Temple, and the frustrating Forest of Seasons area I couldnt pass. Incredible graphics that still wow me. And Shadowrun I just recently played - having watched my brother play it as a child. It was VERY mature for it's time, and ranked up there with Mana, Final Fantasy 3 and Breath of Fire 2 as some of the strongest RPG's on the SNES. Sadly, no sequel was made - although I think one was in production - and even though theres a new Shadowduels project coming out, no game is on the horizon, which is sad because it has a universe that is just WAITING to be plundered for this generation. The folks who created DUES EX I could EASILY see taking the reigns of this series. Ed. Note. - Entire post redone because Millarworld is acting like a red-headed-stepchild. |
nes and snes are my favourite systems...these next generation crap doens't cut it...
|
I remember the sega master system had 3D goggles, and a sort of futuristic flight stick.
|
"Well, just blow on it. . ."
Oh man I rememeber those times. The game game won't start so I'll blow into it. "Here give me that perfectly rectanguler controller with buttons that stick and ill show you how to play Zelda!". The controller sucked but the games were addictive. You would spend at least 3 hours a day on that sucker. I had more fun playing NES as a kid then I ever will messing around with some fancy system where I can hear people talk. |
snes is the best old skool console ever made do u guys remember 3do or jaguar ?
|
nes i loved duck hunter
and snes rules all with everything |
sega pwnd all..general chaos was enough for me to buy the system
|
NINTENDO > y'all
|
Actually, the trick to getting old nintendo cartridges to work properly was not
to blow air in them but rather, expel a current of very humid air. Every time I did it, I had a working game... biggrin: My old favorite was the TurboGrafx 16! OOOOOOOOOOooooooooh, don't forget the ATARI 2600!!! Great memories!! |
The Blowing trick always worked for me.....Blow in the cartridge, blow in the console. Smack the roof of the NES console a couple times......Ready to roll.
Shit, I LOVED my NES. I just downloaded a SNES emulator a week ago, and since then, I've clocked SMB3 (One of the greatest games, EVER.), Super Mario World, and SMB2......I'm about to have a go on the original SMB, the one I could never finish back in the day. (Level 8-2 always fucking killed me.) ....All the above games are on SNES's "Super Mario All-Stars." I have SOOO many memories of playing NES and SNES games. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, is still absolutely stunning, and beautiful for its time......Still VERY playable. |

I bet if they thought about it back in the old days they would have stuck stickers on the consoles and cartdriges saying "blowing/kicking voids the warranty".
|
Aha i never knew they made on of those. Kung Fu the game for nintendo witch just constied of 3 or 4 levels kicked ass
|
All I want to know is - Who the hell else owned Pong?
Am I the only one? Both players had to use one controler smaller than you r keyboard, but all you had was one button and a slide. Anyone? |
what was the name of that video game system that you wore down over your eye? it has the red lens. that thing was cool
|
Atari. Doesn't anyone remember Atari? That was my 1st game console. Played "Space Invaders", "Asteroids", and "Pac-man" for hours.

And what's everyones FIRST console experience? Mine was waking up on Xmas morning and finding a kickass NES under the tree with Double Dragon 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zelda, and of course Super Mario Brothers 3 (which shows how late we were to get the NES in the ghetto). After that. . .it was all over. We then swapped games constantly with everyone else in the neighborhood - Nightmare On Elmstreet (my god) was my favorite swap at the time. ed: |
Sga genesis, God that console owned. I had every single SOnic Game made for it, and a whole lot of other game for it. I remember I got so mad because i died on the last level in Power Rangers, i beat up on it til it broke cry:
|
First console exoperience was indeed the Atari 2600. I got it Christmas morning WAY back when...not sure of the year, but it was early 80s.
It came with Breakout, Asteroids and Combat, but the folks bought Pacman for us too. I played the shit outta those games. |
Getting NES games to actually work was the greatest thing about the system. My friend determined you need to blow in it, then blow in the cartridge, then burp in it, lol
Oh god, how bout the movie The Wizard with Fred Savage? The final stage of the tournament was Super Mario Bros. 3 lol |
I never had a whole lot of cash when I was young, and my parents never bought me one (some people have to work to earn their stuff biggrin: ) so I was pretty late on the scene too. got the SNES and played it for hours on end. Amazingly, that was my first console. Of course, I would go over to my friends' houses when I needed to and use theirs. lol, used them for there video games.

Old memories revived. The link may seem a bit on the odd side but its a online emulator. |

Hey dont sweat it - my mother only ever bought us the NES and a couple games. We stole the rest. I remember when the 3D0 came out. We had the fighting game (that had Rob Zombies music in it), and the racing game. Both were kick ass, but the 3D0 was doomed to fail. I remember playing as this redneck who spit liquor on you and then set you on fire. Ahhhhh good times. |
I got a NES on my 6th birthday, came with Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge, and tetris. I never once removed the SMB cartridge for like 5 years.
I never clocked it on the console.....My sister did it twice, but I always fucked up on 8 - 2....! I only clocked it for the first time yesterday, using an emulator. I remember later on, getting games like: Trog, Hook (The game of the movie), Tennis, and Golf.... |

speaking of doomer consoles, whyd the DC have to die? God im like the only one who loved that system. Sould Calibur, Sonic Adventures 1/2, Crazy Taxi 1/2, etc.
I WILL MISS YOU OLD DREAMCAST I would play it, but my RGB or whatever cable its called (one with red, white, and tellow wires) is fucked, the sound wont work. Anyone wanna sell me theirs? |

But yes, it did have some sweet games on it - Jet Grind Radio, Zamba De Amigo, Code Veronica (another RE game that scared my pants off), Skies Of Arcadia (best RPG for DC), and numerous fighting games. Everything else just sucked SOOOO bad it couldn't keep up. And we're talking OLD SKOOL here. NES, SNES, SEGA, ATARI, JAGUAR - hell even 3D0 qualifies. |
