I am your new mod, and i need your help

first off i would like to announce that a while back i used to be a hardcore modder and i spent most of my time in here. over the time i watched this place rot

1) whats wrong with this place in your opinion
2) what can be done to solve this problem in your opinion

of couse i have my own plan to revive this shithole but i want to know what you all think

Scalping Chief 08-14-2003 12:47 AM

omg h4x!

Dr. Deleto 08-14-2003 01:48 AM

gg Simo! The first idea I have to clean things up around here is lay down the law. I am like you. been here for a while and come here only to help people trying to learn to mod or to release or get ideas on my own mods. heres a list that may help.

1. Make sure it is understood that the modders that post here are posting here to give thier hard work out to other people FOR FREE! Stop all the name calling and viscious reviews. If the post or tip isnt constructive in any way shape or form. then it should not be posted in the first place.

2. Remove the people who come here only to flame and start arguments. They are doing noone any good and in the end always look stupid for thier efforts.

3. Have all the people that have been around for a while meet in a chat room or on a messenger service and discuss with them the need to be an example to follow. If the Vets act like children then the new people will too.

4. DO NOT give absolution to ANYONE. if they screw up, regardless of the fact that they are a freind. then warn them or punish them in the same manner you would anyone else. Can't play favorites or it will get out of hand with some people. Weve all seen it happen with previous moderators.

thats about all I can think of right now. maybe it will help.

Simo Häyhä 08-14-2003 01:56 AM

great post deleto.
imo innoxx ruined this forum with his recolors thread. MMS is mostly skinning, and if someone works hard at their skin i think they deserve thier own thread, call me crazy oOo:

i have deleted some of the old regimes posts and i will be on flame war watch from now on, hopefully with the 2 expansions coming out it will breathe life back into this place.

questions, comments, concerns? drop me a line

Eidolon 08-14-2003 03:10 AM

Here's a few from a TMT/Mohaa vet.

Trouble is, with most skinning done from what I've seen, it's mostly just paying lip service to an existing skin. Real talent would lay in making one from scratch.

Of course same goes for modeling too, and maybe if a couple of people use the same thread to advertise their new work in progress would be better off posting in one thread, and posting any updates in the same, instead of making a hundred, and not getting pissed if noone replies. If no-one's interested, bumping it will not increase their interest.

And for fuck's sake, stop arguing with the mods. It's their site.

Sniped Ur Azz 08-14-2003 07:06 AM

Well, you asked for my opinion so I am gonna express it. Please do not flame me for what I am going to say.

1. I believe that the main problem with this place is, everyone tries to be a hard ***. Everyone wants to OWN this place, if you know what I mean? If people would just let Bull**** post go, then there would be ALOT less flamming and closed threads because of it. Just dont listen to people that trash, and IMO the moderators, need to be moderators and not bossy lil punks that think they can control someone. The thing the moderators have to understand is, this is a forum on the internet for a Game I CHOSE to spend my money on and buy. Well, then why do I have to come here and sit through totrure and have to file through flamming and closed threads just to get to a usefull thread? It isn't right.

2. Mods need to just STOP BEING AN ***! Dont boss us around like it is being done. It just CAUSES more problems.....want an example? Well here is 2, the thread entitled "Totally AGREE" was posted by a guy named DeadlySiner. He was simply expressing his viewpoints towards this forum, and yet the first words out of a moderators mouth was "jesus h christ shut your fucking trap" by Strik0r. Now why was he like that? Because he has SOME power and he abuses it. If a moderator wanted to close it, he could have been alot nicer about it. Cmon little kids browse these forums too. I dont want my little brother to come here and see fowl language such as that.

3. Moderators need to be rethought, the ones that exist now are not fit for the job, they need to be flushed out. Not saying you Simo, seeing as I do not know how you mod yet, but your starting out in a kick *** way by asking us, thanks.

Thanks for your time and I wont be suprised if I get flammed, but I dont care anymore you asked I answered.

Tystnad 08-14-2003 07:42 AM

The only problem i have here is the stupid people that cant accept othes laying down loads of work on what they think is good, just to be flamed for it here. And its not just the regular members that stand for the flaming, but the so called "moderators" do aswell. As for now, the only one locking threads and keeping the law in here (M/M/S), is Zoner.
So welcome Simo, and i know your gonna do a betta job than those other "modders". biggrin:

MPowell1944 08-14-2003 07:57 AM

Simo, if you are really serious about this, then more power to you.

1. Remove dumbass wasteful threads.
2. Boot dumbass flamers and those who taunt others.
3. Re-organize the forum. It so out of whack.
4. Get Strik0r out of office. Banned is what he should have stayed.

Good luck.

patton13 08-14-2003 10:39 AM

Look.

1. Stop with Callin People n00bs. This is a place to exhibit work not for a dick messuring contest.

2. Find Mature mods.

3. GET Strik0r out! Im mean he even mockes this Site in his sig.

4. BANN ANYONE WHO GETS OUT OF LINE AS OF A CERTAIN DATE.

Of course Im just a crazy n00b. WTF do I know?

DeadlySiner 08-14-2003 10:39 AM

Well when i first came here it was a good lace to LEARN and get some GREAT mods from great ppl. Then after a while it became a place to just argue ect ect

1. The mods seem to be the MAIN problem (Not all the mods but im sure u know who im talking about) First if the mods didnt act the way they did then the other members wouldnt. Second half the ppl here dont play or contribute to mohaa in ANY way, So why come here just to flame so called nOObs EVERYONE was a noob at one point in time why is it that someone just got into gaming cant come here and get help You guys think the CN team just woke up one day and could mod like they can now. Also every time someone skins something its not ripping they are just trying to learn how to yeah it is great when someone does something from scratch but how are they suppose to learn quit with the credits ESPECIALLLY if they are just posting pics you have absolutly no idea if they havent gave proper credits as far as u know it could be in the readme so at least wait until the dl is releases and when they say "Hey i just started skinning and this is my first skin" then give them some contructive criticism not just say STFU noob. Any way i could go ON an ON but thats about it for now

GOOD LUCK WITH THE REVIVIAL of AA.com

Oh yeah we do need to clean up the forums they are kind of slow sometimes I know they have a feature in the setup for auto pruning maybe set it to like 90 days So that after 90 days of no post in that thread it will be deleted also need to check some of the pinned topics i looked at the bryce tut the other day and all the pics are gone if a tut is going to be pinned like that i know its not the mods job but maybe they should host those pics on aa.com so that they will always be there just some ideas

Simo Häyhä 08-14-2003 12:10 PM

ok i see the main problems here
1) bad moderators
2) Flamming

i will work my best to get rid of these 2 elements here. and maybe add something like Skin of the week or Map of the week

DeadlySiner 08-14-2003 12:17 PM

Great, glad to hear that

patton13 08-14-2003 12:24 PM

Simo. If you can fix the faults of this place you'll be my hero. angel:

stungun02278 08-14-2003 01:04 PM

organization is a big problem too.

seperate into Spearhead and Allied Assault, make a skins forum and a map forum, together is jus strange, maybe a scripting forum, TMT has a nice setup and yes dispose of the holier then thou jerk offs and flamers who frequent these boards cool:

imported_Grim_Reaper 08-14-2003 01:22 PM

glad to see some1 is dedicated to cleanin this place gj simo! biggrin: one thing tho, instead of locking threadscause of private flame wars y dont u delete the replies? just a suggestion biggrin:

Simo Häyhä 08-14-2003 01:54 PM

Stun - i do not have the power to do that

oh and what some of you guys dont know, Locking a thread takes 1 second to do, where as deleting a thread takes as long as 2 minutes. the former mods didnt take the time to delete a low quality thread, thus locking a thread made this forum look messy

Strik0r 08-14-2003 01:59 PM

people here are too immature to handle getting their post deleted, just like they're too immature to handle it getting locked

MPowell1944 08-14-2003 02:04 PM

The only reason I would lock or delete a thread is if a flamewar was about to happen. If you have say a topic like City Nights 2 and the flames start going, just delete those posts and keep the thread alive. Removing or locking the thread only makes those who created it that much more upset at the mod who removed it.

so true

patton13 08-14-2003 04:39 PM

Were did I hear that Deliting a thread would make the forums crash?

I Belive it was the Le Frenchmen

Balr14 08-14-2003 08:04 PM

Good luck, Simo. I think you are going to need it. I was one of the early members of this site (check my date). I pretty much left because it doesn't have any serious modders. It hasn't changed. There is very little substance here. To make matters worse, the members here have made it pretty clear they don't like the serious modders. Doesn't leave a whole lot of material on which to base a mapping, modding and skinning forum.

This was THE place to post your maps and mods at one time. Now it's a wasteland.

Dr. Deleto 08-14-2003 09:43 PM

preach it brotha balr14. a person shouldnt have to take shit from a community, for doing something for said community. thats ridiculous.

I agree FULLY! I remember back when I first got MOHAA, man I was such a n00b as was everyone else was :) Well I remember wanting to come here all the time to see the new mods and maps because this place was hip and with it man. This place had everything to offer. Now, it is a lonly forum with no meaning. I really wish you can turn it around SIMO, I really do. So good luck.

what is it with you n00bs, not understanding the difference between mods and admins?

And you do know that strik0r is still mod here right?

crunch 08-16-2003 06:48 AM

Hello all.
I agree with Balr14. Simo, best of luck, you WILL need it.

This post is proof positive of the very issues that are trying to be avoided.
It started as a suggestion post for changes to the site, and has become a flame of certain people.

That is the very thing that makes these forums useless.

You really want to change the forum?
Stop keeping post counts and ranks.
It seems that users tend to get more involved in how many posts they have, and therefore do not even attempt to use the "search" function.
A problem not mentioned so far is the fact that posts are written over and over again, all dealing with the same subject.

If users "search" most likely they would find their answers. But then if they found their answer, they couldn't start a new thread and gain post counts.

Another very helpful thing would be for users themselves to be more specific in their post titles. This greatly increases the chance that the post will show up in a search. These "HELP!!!!!" topics clutter the forum, and hinder searches. It would be a lot better to limit searches to post titles, instead of getting 2000 hits in a search. So instead of HELP!!!, actually state the problem in the post title as best as possible.

If you post material on the site, and the response that you get is not positive, don't get pissed off. It's no big deal. You can't make everyone happy. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But how you say it is just as important as what you say.

Lastly, Simo has a huge job ahead of him. The problems are known.
It is up to the users themselves to help out. Just STOP the garbage replies. Try to have some informative content in your replies.
Yes--they are n00b's..yes...they may ask uninformative q's.....maybe the submissions are not that great....but you know what? You were a n00b once, too.

As a user of the forum, it is up to you to change it! Talk is one thing...action is another entirely.

Kill Ya Later!

Dr. Deleto 08-16-2003 01:05 PM

well said. well said indeed. I think crunch has a winner.

General Death 08-17-2003 07:36 AM

Good luck as I have always thought that aa.com was past the point of no return.

The key is mature moderating and admining....and what tough is that the majority of the members are not. Removing 90% of the forums might get you there.

I have to say you guys will be in for a tramendas amount of work...best of luck...you will need it.

Hobbes 08-17-2003 10:13 AM

Well I started playing MOH in April 2002 and didn't find this site until Jan 2003. Even then it was a godsend I found so many hepful threads with the search function. I couldn't belive how much I did'nt know at the time. The one time I couldn't find an answer with the search funtion I posted it and had an imdeiate answer. Now I see new peeps post and the only responce they get is flames.

Someone has already suggested a seperate fourm for MOH: AA & SH and with Breakthrough and PA comming out I think this would be a great Idea. There is enough differences in AA and SH to warrent it and no doubt it will be the same with BT and PA.

Flaming has gotten way out of hand with some of the mods the worse culprits, just encourages the others. Failing to get a handle on the flammers will make all other efforts redundent.

There is a lot of useful information in the older post perhaps culling the pertenint info out of them and posting them in one location would great.

Someone also suggested getting rid of ranks and post counts, this is another great idea as quite a few peeps post just to get a higher rank, whichs leads to flamming.

Emoticons - cute can help make a point but on this site are continualy abused, give some consideration to removing them althogether.

Well I hope you can pull this off I would hate to see this site go under.

there are TONS of tutorials for recolors, just look at the guides section at AA. but as far as i know, no one has been kind enough to post a model converting tutorial. tsk tsk hake:
