Has anybody here actually been charged. I still use it and nothing has happened to me and never will. Well more specifically I use Kazaa Lite. Does that make a difference?

Not really. Just means theyd have to work even harder to retrace your IP. And as long as you keep that FOLDER CLOSED, then you can let the other noobs share music. I'm sure many of them dont even KNOW theres a "do not share" folder. THe thing is they arent trakcing whos dling what - that would be a HUGE database and pointless, they are tracking who people are dling FROM.

Or you could just use DirectConnect, mIRC, or newgroups.

here is the article about the 12 year old girl being charged.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/32731.html

[quote:f3f3e]The RIAA has nailed one of the most prolific file-traders in the U.S., filing a lawsuit against 12-year-old Brianna LaHara.

When not at the playground with her friends, "Biggie Brianna" is trading music files from her home in New York. The little girl received one of the 261 lawsuits filed by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) on Monday, according to the New York Post. She may look like a sweet and innocent child, but the RIAA says it's only going after major copyright violators at the moment. So you make the call.

"I got really scared. My stomach is all turning," Brianna told the Post. "I thought it was OK to download music because my mom paid a service fee for it. Out of all people, why did they pick me?"

It turns out that Brianna's mum paid a $29.99 service charge to KaZaA for the company's music service. Brianna, however, thought this meant she could download songs at will. How naive!

When reporters charged into Brianna's home, she was helping her brother with some homework. She is an honors student at St. Gregory the Great school.

Brianna could face charges of up to $150,000 per infringed song, but we have a feeling this might be a tad unrealistic. We suggest the RIAA take all of her toys instead.

"Nobody likes playing the heavy and having to resort to litigation," RIAA president Cary Sherman said in a statement. "But when your product is being regularly stolen, there comes a time when you have to take appropriate action."

Go get her, Cary. [/quote:f3f3e]

I didn't ever notice a "do not share" folder. So your saying it would be safe as long as you dont allow music to be downloaded from your PC?

ED! 09-14-2003 09:27 PM

Yes. They can easily see whos downloading what, but if youre folder isnt shared - how are they going to know how much you got? Theyre going after the SHARERS. And not the lil sharers. As long as people dont share alot over the network they should be fine too. But if u want to be safe - just be one of the folks who DONT share. All it takes is for an RIAA bastard to browse by user and theres all your shit to see.

Scalping Chief 09-14-2003 09:39 PM

meh i dont care

so if i go to a university that is extremely strict at sharing files, would winmx or directconnect be my best options

Pyro 09-14-2003 11:47 PM

There's a hack out that blocks RIAA's access anyways.
