This is so false that it is laughable, please disregard the above post.

Short Hand 10-09-2003 08:42 PM

Fine buddy. your loss. Just becuase you have a grudge against me don't hurt everyone else. givwe it a second look.

Short Hand 10-09-2003 08:43 PM

alright here IS the proof you need dick head.

The site is in french translate it at altavista.com to English.

[quote:e7279]According to an article written in zataz, but in french, (http://www.zataz.com/) there is a spyware included in this fake beta distributed by Valve themselves. Valve hope to catch pirates network with the help of the US authority.

I dont know what to think about it. But a thing is sure ; it's a beta and it doesnt worth the risk. [/quote:e7279]

Short Hand 10-09-2003 08:49 PM

This is recent news as of about an hour ago. More confirmation will be coming in within the next 24 hours if it is true.

Short Hand 10-09-2003 08:52 PM

/also anyone who played the beta knows it is kinda weird since it is really skimpy.

Scalping Chief 10-09-2003 08:53 PM

have u played it shorthand?

Simo Häyhä 10-09-2003 09:01 PM

lol if ur really paranoid just take out the cable that connects to your modem and play

Short Hand 10-09-2003 09:07 PM
have u played it shorthand?[/quote:e5f8d]

lets just say "Joe was about to until he read this"

So i guess Joe is not in that much trouble but a lot of people that joe knows might be in trouble.
lol if ur really paranoid just take out the cable that connects to your modem and play[/quote:7cafa]

It is a good idea the only thing i that it installs spyware. which is seperate so when you plug the cable back in later.....You can't go without the internet forever.

Hollywood 10-10-2003 05:51 AM

Listen, there is no SPYWARE, no IP Logging, nothing. Need proof? Run the game, then check to see if there are any active connections that weren't there before you ran the game. Also, run a good firewall program, because anything trying to make a connection outside of your router will require permission to connect. Then run spybot if you are still paranoid, if you know what you are doing then you would know there is no damn spyware/trojan/virus in the leaked Beta.

Kids theses days, always so eager to jump on the rumor bandwagon.

OutlawSZ 10-10-2003 08:19 AM

shoot...the steam client 1.6 has spyware..known this for about 6 weeks now..where ya been?

Short hand how old are you? Now you are saying you played the beta, but it was "skimpy". Oh and please watch the constant posting, try to get it out in one paragraph. BTW if you have the Beta then hell freezing over must not be too far away.

1080jibber 10-10-2003 03:46 PM

i just got the beta, and i really dont give a shit if its got spy-ware, im going to play it anyways.....but i think it (the spyware) is just a rumor that the HL2 fanboys made up so no one would play it

rudedog 10-10-2003 07:52 PM

Now this doesn't mean any "new" version of this game could be "spiked" by some unfriendly haX0rz.

let's learn about the netstat command:

Start any program you think could be leaking info to the Internet.

Then open a command prompt and type

[code:b7104]netstat –anp[/code:b7104]

netstat will give you the status of your connection. The switches do the following:

-a Prints information on all connections, including those in a listening state
–n Shows only numerical addresses; does not resolve IPs to hostnames. ( I have been taught to use this to speed up the reply. So you don't have to wait for the IP's to be resolved to the hostname.
–p Displays the process name and PID of each connection.

The info you get back will let you know what port if any is connected to the outside world. If you have a irc, ftp or web browser open, you will see their corresponding ports listed with the IP address they are connected too.

This is the easiest and fastest way to see if something is "phoning home" from your computer.

This can be used on both windows and or Linux boxes.

idk im kinda out of it oOo:

rudedog 10-13-2003 05:52 PM

That's a private address. of your cable modem or a box behind your cable modem,

type just that IP address into a web browser and you should see your modem.

Normaly your cable modem's IP is 192.168.1.100. You can check your signal levels and reset your modem as well.

KTOG 10-13-2003 08:55 PM

Its skimpy because the game was never final when it was stolen. I want to see you comile a game when you don't have the complete source and textures.

Hollywood 10-13-2003 10:02 PM

What I want to know is, why are you telling him to net use a private address oOo: ??

Actually Rude cable modems use the ISP's private network, which is why you usually see a 10.*.*.* address in a tracert, It's a class A private address. Anything behind the router will have a 192.168.*.* number.

192.168.x.x is also a private address as well as 10.x.x.x

I was mistaken, http://192.168.100.1/ is your cable modems IP address.

Even if there IS spyware or something 'phoning home', Valve wouldn't waste
time on peons (end users) play-testing some half-finished code: they would
give a kidney to get the cracker, though...

For those of you who downloaded Condition Zero: look on the bright side,
you would never have had the chance to play that version, as it is nowhere
near what the final product will look and play like in November. 'Some' of
the missions will make their way in the final as 'bonus material' but not in
the game itself.

Don't worry, fuckers... they're not after you: they want the big fish.

I heard razor 1911 got busted (not in relation to HL2), but I still see their stuff around on new games.

Anyone else heard this????

Can't you just work your way up the ladder ? I mean really start small then go big. It seems like a sdmart idea on valves behalf.
