Lingo

Speaking of that thread, I find it hard to even visit these forums knowing people walk around all day saying "OMFG GG N00BERSTEIN, I PWNED JOOZ!!!" and all that crap. . .

BUT! I do want to know what type of lingo you do use. Try to stay away from inside jokes, so you don't corn-fuse people.

"Man up, woman" = Usually during drinking, if alachol is poured in your glass, you drink it, no if's, and's, or but's.

"What's, up, slut." = Say each word like it's one word, kinda like "Me, Myself, I". Slut is most commonly used, but can be changed for anything, really. Meant to just be a type of excitement.

"Just call out, it'll be ok, call out!!!" = You're getting drunk, you're not going to work in the morning. I've heard this too many times.

"SHUT UP!" = Say it like Arnold Schwartzanegger. Same use, just said differently.

I know, spam

I'm from Newfoundland. 'nuff said, really.

We have a language all our own.

But, aside from Newf, my friends and I have a TON of sayings and lingo. I won't go into detail here because it's too much to explain. A few examples, then:

1. "Buckled/Cooked/Tore" = to beat yourself up by accident

Example: "I buckled my knee playing hockey." or "Man, I fell off my bike and cooked myself."

2. "Go pack sand up yer ass!" = Variant of "Go fuck yourself"

3. "Ginge" = slut/tramp/whore

4. "maj" = Shortened form of "imagine" as in "I imagine so".

Example:
Friend #1: "Are you gonna watch the heritage Classic Hockey Game?"
Friend #2: "maj"

One other thing we do for a laugh is drop the last syllable on multisyllabic words. It's addictive and funny if you actually keep doing it. One of my friends I met in university introduced me to this...he and his friends had been talking like that for years.

For example, "Education" would sound like "Ed-u-kay-sh".

Confused? Good.

Hon-short for honey..its a Baltimore thing. EVERYONE says it....

Hollywood 11-21-2003 03:16 PM

I got stuck in traffic on the highway in Baltimore once. There were literally dozens of people backing up in the breakdown lane and through the onramp just to avoid the traffic. Is this an every day thing? There must be a lot of accidents.

eh...just in certain spots where major interstates merge into smaller interstates like 95 to 495 ro 70 to 695..seems they thought turning 3-5 lanes of traffic and having them exit into on or 2 lanes wouldnt pose a problem. plus in recent years we have had a population explosion as welll as massive tech parks opening up cause DC is 35 minutes away. so you have all these smaktards from Bmore commuting to DC or Northern Va everyday...makes for a fine commute oOo: cuss:

I drive over 1000 miles a week and id say on average i see atleast 4-6 accidents a week....

pest 11-21-2003 03:39 PM

pop = what a ballon does
soda = is bubbly water
coke = softdrink

Every female is known as hon down here.

A new phrase gaining popularity is "ya reckon"

dude 1 - Looks like rain today.

dude 2 - Ya reckon?

dude 1 - yep

It keeps people from confusing us with the tourists and transplants.

JBird 11-21-2003 03:46 PM

all regions of the country have different words for what the call pop. to me, calling all pop coke would be quite confusing.

"what kind of coke do you want"

"mountain dew" oOo:

Simo Häyhä 11-21-2003 04:33 PM

haha, that's also a totally standard Aussie phrase..."lets go to the pub, whaddaya reckon?"
or
bloke1 "I can drink more schooners than you!"
bloke2 "...ya reckon?"
bloke1 "Too bloody right I reckon" etc....

also, here's some sayings that have become common here and annoy the crap out of me:

"How good is that!?" whenever there's a positive outcome in anything, it's always "How good is that!?"
to which I reply "I dunno...just OK?....really excellent?...you fucken tell me..."

and "Ordinary" to describe something really bad/hopeless/dumb, as in:
bloke1 "My head just imploded"
bloke2 "Jeez mate, that's a bit ordinary."
bloke1 "Yairs, and my entire family just got taken by a crocodile"
bloke2 "Dead-set!?...crikey, how friggen ordinary is that?" eek:

As a loyal subject of Her Majesties penal* colony of Orstralia, I hereby
concur that all said pop/soda items are correctly known as, and in point
of actual fact should only be referred to from this point forward as, fizzy-drink.

I'm sure it does, notice I said with a NZ accent, you, Tripper, may not have the accent I described, but you know exactly what I mean.

I'm with pest on this. He must be from the southern US. Almost
everyone in the southern states refer to any carbonated beverage as
"coke".
Example: I'm going to the coke machine. This could mean
Dr. Pepper, sprite, diet pepsi ect. No need to specify.
BUT if you are ordering a soft drink you need to specify
Example: I would like a hamburger and a Pepsi to drink.
If you said coke in that example, you would have specifically
wanted a coca-cola.
We never use the terms pop or soda. Never heard of fizzy drink.
You would get some weird looks if you said fizzy drink.
