Largest Prime number ever FOUND!

who the hell cares!

its 2 to the 20,996,011th power minus 1

The number is 6,320,430 digits long and would need 1,400 to 1,500 pages to write out

Madmartagen 12-11-2003 11:48 PM

Cpt. Obvious 12-11-2003 11:54 PM

what was the point of it.
i guess it was for bragging rights.

Geek 1- My prime number is bigger than yours.
Geek 2- So my theory on quantum physics owns yours.

oOo:

I don't see why people waste their time doing this...also finding out how many digits follow PI

Jimmy Paterson 12-12-2003 12:33 AM

probably the same reason we are wasting our time posting nonsence!?

PGP.

SoLiDUS 12-12-2003 12:58 AM

Primes are r0x0r...

Shit like this can be used in Cryptology.

Also, HE didn't find it alone: it was a multi-system effort. Every computer
crunched a bit of data but he just happened to be the lucky person who's
system performed the last few calculations before announcing a new prime.

ninty 12-12-2003 02:17 AM

I think that is amazing.

Think of how hard it is to find a number that large, that is only divisible by itself and one. It's mind boggling. You would think that after getting that large, it would have to be divisible by something, since there should be many combinations to get the number. Very cool.

Indeed. biggrin:

I'm not in "nerd denial". If there's a nerdy thing to do, I've probably done it.

Thats the short hand form of the number to actually write the entire number out would take that many pages

Unknown_Sniper 12-12-2003 02:04 PM

you're ghey. fuck off noob eek:

bwolf 12-13-2003 04:18 AM

The "super computer" used finds a new largest prime number relatively often. The only reason why this one made the news is because it happened to be on a graduate students computer, instead of some lonely 40 year old guy with no friends. To all you fools who said what's the point, like someone else said earlier, primes are used for encryption. Encryption uses the product of 2 very large primes and the larger they are, the more encrypted the data will be. Thus, large primes are very important and very expensive.

i'm a math major annoy:
