The sad thing is, with the age range here, most members would think "oldies" music is Pearl Jam and Nirvana. rolleyes:
I like some older stuff, but usually don't dip earlier than the 70s, although I do like some old James Brown stuff. I dig old school 70s funk a lot. KC & The Sunshine Band, The Brothers Johnson, George Clinton, Barry White...all classics. On the rock side, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, KISS...obvious standouts for me. Of course, a lot of the material from my fave band of all time (shame on you if you don't know by now...) could be considered "oldies" now...seeing as though their first album was released in 1980. |
Johnny Cash/King Crimson/Black Sabbath/Count Bassie/Billie Holiday/Nina Simone/Eartha Kitt(her rendition of Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend is simply priceless) rock:
Old Genesis was good stuff with Gabriel in drag...The Who (cant believe no one mentioned that one) David Bowie...20th century composers such as Bela Bartok are in my collection... eek: i should be shoot....add Sinatra to the list... |
I love anything done around late 60's early 70's, right around vietnam
The Who - Baba O'Reilly CCR - Proud Mary KEEPThe Band - Up on cripple creek CCR - Have You Ever Seen The Rain George Thorogood - Bad To The Bone\ BTO - Takin' Care of Buisness Golden Earring - Radar Love Golden Earring - Twilight Zone Steve Earle - Copperhead Road Zombies - Time of the Season Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower Rolling stones - paint it black - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Vietnam War Song Barry Mcguire - Eve of Destruction all of the above are awsome rock: |

Anything later then that is Classic Rock. There is usually a totally different sound distinction between the two. |

Not all of it for that matter. My Mother graduated in the early 60s and she has like 3 CDs that says right on the cover... "GOLDEN OLDIES - 50s/60s/70s". You're missing the entire point of calling it an "oldie". It's not a new type of music... it's just a category for music that was made 30 to 40 years ago.. whether it be rock/jazz/ etc annoy: |

Where I live, there are two radio stations that play music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, what you like to classify as "Golden Oldies". One is Oldies 103.3. This station is mainly music from the 50s and early 60s. http://www.oldies1033.com/ The other is 100.7, WZLX, CLASSIC ROCK. This plays music ranging from the late 60s up to, in some cases, the early 80s. http://www.wzlx.com/ It's obviously different where you live, but down in Boston that's just how it is. The only thing they both play is usually The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Neil Diamond. [quote:6c2f3] You're missing the entire point of calling it an "oldie". It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out. But, it's hard to say that music from the 50s and music from the 70s sound similar. I guess I've just always thought that oldies were subdivided into two parts, Golden Oldies, which is primarily music from the early 50s, and Classic Rock, which is primarily music from the 70s and 60s. There's a huge difference between the most popular music of the 50s and the most popular music of the 70s. Compare anything by Elvis in the 50s to the most popular Led Zeppelin songs and its hard to say they fit in the same category. Oh and to answer your original question, I religiously listen to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. oOo: |

If it's so god damn easy to figure out then why the hell were you givin me lip originally you piece of shit? And since when did I say music from the 50s and 70s "sound similar" I'd put down that bowl and think for once you reject. [quote:ef315]Oh and to answer your original question, I religiously listen to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. oOo:[/quote:ef315] When did I ask you that, pot head? If you knew anything about music then you'd know ANY TYPE OF "HIT" back in the 50/60/70 ere was considered a classic oldie, especially now. Check out this site: http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/index.html It should explain everything for you there, Pasquale you fuckin woman. |
yeah really. classic oldies is diff from classic rock. check out the whnn website
|
To stay on topic my favorite of the 60s would have to be Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Righteous Brothers, The Beatles, Elvis, and the Temptations.
Guns n Roses, AC/DC, Quiet Riot and Nirvana would have to be my favorite of the 80s and early 90s. |
1965 and Before qualify as 'Oldies' in my book
|
WRONG, how can you miss the entire 1969 era? stupid:
|
Personally I think anything that is under 1970 is considered an "Oldie".

You didn't, I never said you did. I was trying to prove a point that Oldies are subdivided.
When did I ask you that, pot head?[/quote:3bd35] The topic was in the form of a question. You didn't specifically ask me but the whole forum in general. Man, there was no need to get so offensive. It's all oldies, but what I was trying to explain to you is that oldies are generally subdivided into two categories, Golden Oldies from the 50s and such and Classic Rock from the mid 60s through the 70s. |
no they're not. oldies are from 50's to about 70's. classic rock is totally different. listen to a classic rock station and a golden oldies station
|
no they're not. oldies are from 50's to about 70's. classic rock is totally different. listen to a classic rock station and a golden oldies station[/quote:d4ac1]
I don't know about your stations in Michigan, but around here, Classic Rock stations play music ranging from the mid 60s on through the 70s, and Golden Oldies stations play mostly 50s to mid 60s. Sometimes they interchange and play the same bands, but the music is from different times. Explain to me what you think is Classic Rock and what you think is Oldies, not just times but band names and/or songs. |
thats weird, well oldies are mostly pop (beatles, elvis, motown, beach boys) around here
|
thats weird, well oldies are mostly pop (beatles, elvis, motown, beach boys) around here[/quote:8f7b7]
Yeah, excluding most Elvis, all of motown, and the early Beatles songs, that's all Classic Rock around here. Motown, the majority of Elvis, and the early Beatles songs are Golden Oldies. I guess people never even bothered to explain which is what and what constitutes what goes where. It's all oldies in the end. I was looking at that site you posted, and that's mostly Golden Oldies around here, exlcuding Bob Dylan, CSN&Y, some of the Rolling Stones, and a few others. |
yeah, there's not really a defining time period for that music, it kinda meshes together and then ends and starts at differen times
|
yeah, there's not really a defining time period for that music, it kinda meshes together and then ends and starts at differen times[/quote:2a5b3]
Yeah. But at least we are arguing about the best modern musical period. Some bands changed their sound, and others stuck with the same sound even through the 60s and I bet some even went through the 70s. |
mine are
The Rolling Stones(Best band still today),CCR,The police,LZ,PinkFlyod,GrandFunk RailRoad and more |
The beatles are ownage.
I dont really like lynard skynard, but the song freebird is so good, one of my favorites. |
