Need Help with New PC
 

I need some serious help. I got into gaming using a Compaq Presario that i got at Price Club. I have maxed the thing out, upgraded everything, and I need more. One of my boys just got one from http://www.rcybertech.com, and was suggesting that i do the same thing, he loves his. He is also new and has money to burn. I dont have this luxery though. Can anyone help me out, let me know what would be a good setup for an awesome gaming PC? are the computers on that site any good? thanks. offtopic:

Build your own. It's a hell of alot cheaper and you don't have to buy everything at once. I got an athlon XP 2600+ for $100 and a Gigabyte K-7 Triton Mobo for $50 off of E-bay. Thats basically a whole new system when you throw in your other other devices. Just keep adding newer components as you come up with the cash.

Build your own. Dell is overpriced for what they are.

There are many online guides for how to do it. [url:5e523]http://www.anandtech.com[/url:5e523] has a guides section, try it. They are infantly upgradable because the componants can be replaced one at a time at later points. Unlike company computers which actually make upgrades harder, in some cases impossible. Like when compaq used it own rail system to mount HD's, CD roms, and used "bigfoot" HD's. You had to buy parts from them to install new crap, and the wiring sometimes didnt support it whatso ever, so you had to fix that. Over all stock PC's are a hastle you can do away with, all by obtaining some knowledge, which never hurt anyone.

I have always been told that dell sucks. I know Compaq sux, made that mistake before. These people on that site say that they offer upgrading, sounds similar to Dell. Thought that was good. If i do build my own computer, where would i go to get cheap parts? Thought Athlon sucked too? Thanks for the replies guys. fire2:

The best all-around pre-built system company is Dell. For gaming, I would recommend Alienware or Falcon Northwest, but they are out of your price range, as you said you don't have money to burn. If you want to build your own, go for it, but you made it sound like you wanted to buy a new one and eventually upgrade yours.

Just trying to find a good start. If i was going to build my own, where would i find parts cheap? Is there a place? If i wanted to build a good computer with the components that are in the Rcybertech computers, about how much would it run me? Thanks hellfire:

building your own is cheaper but is much harder since you have to do all the work of finding the right parts than assembling the thing yourself. plus if you need tech support, you're the one who built it so you're out of luck

i have a gateway computer that im very happy with spent $1200 a year ago on a 2.53mhz 512mb ram, dvd cdr ram read drive, 128mb g4orce graphics card, nice Boston speakers, 17" monitor, win xp...and this was one of the higher end computers at the time, they had less powerful computers for much cheaper.

have had no problems w/ it, can upgrade easily. i would much rather buy from a company that makes the full package computer than just separate parts

Go to Micro Center. Buy the best Power Spec computer you think you can afford. Upgrade to the best video card you can afford. Add another stick of memory.

Any pre-built system is going to be overpriced, but Joe is right, go with Dell. They give the best warranty plans, their hardware is nice and easy to remove if you have to upgrade, and they let you customize. There is a reason so many businesses use Dell servers and workstations, they are reliable.

They do have a gaming series, not as much as the Alienware systems but still overpriced. I just priced out a system for a friend who would have paid about $1000.00 more if I didn't build him one.

i already purchased and have the case, hd, and cd/rw drive...all i have to do is buy the 3 big hardware components now: cpu, mobo and ram. my budget for hardware was 1000-1200 dollars and i met it nicely.

i am using my old gf4 ti 4600 vid card as a stop gap measure for now, because i feel its still a pretty damn good card, and i cant afford spending another 400 dollars on an unecessary upgrade. (i will simply wait to upgrade the vid card later this yr) i am using my old dell 19" monitor, i will buy some cheap logitech z560 speakers, throw in another 70 bucks for keyboard and mouse and i will have a killer system for a total of around $1200.

a fun thing i like to do is goto alienware and plug in all the hardware i just ordered and see the total price at the end. like $3000 minimum! happy:

If you want a really good DX9 compatible card you can get the 9600 Pro right now for around $150.00 I believe. No need to ever spend that much on a video card.

i am aware of this, however, i have a comparable card in my current system the nvidia ti 4600, which i will just swap out into my new rig, and put my old gf2 mx in this machine. about the 400 dollar comment, i want my new rig to be top o' the line, so 3 or 4 months down the line after its built i will be purchasing a high end ub3r card happy:

I priced all the components that come in the computers on that site, it all adds up to about $1900.00 regardless of who puts it together. I'm talkin about there top of the line gaming PC that they list. The Radeon 9800 all-in-wonder alone was $350+ and the gig of Kingston Hyperx was $232. I checked with Pricegrabber. Is there a cheaper place to find this stuff? Thanks. rock:
