What if someone was on a plane, flying over the ocean? They wouldn't be on a continent. What if I jump up. I'm not on the continent anymore either. What if I suspend myself from my ceiling. That's fucking stupid. Why would a continent be named after a single country.

I've NEVER heard of it being refered to as simply 'Australia,' Australasia is another name for Oceania. Maybe you're getting mixed up?

I'm gonna make a big thing out of this:

I was brought up being taught that MY country belonged to a continent called OCEANIA......I also feel that a continent which includes 22 nations simply being named 'Australia' is inconsiderate.

As a member nation of OCEANIA, I would have thought that our school system would have gotten it right.....and reading through a couple of websites now (most likely North American ones) I am finding out for the first time that the continent is refered to be people overseas as simply AUSTRALIA.....And no doubt, just because it is the biggest country in the continent.

Those 'small ass islands' out in the middle of the ocean make up about 21 out of 22 of the nations in OCEANIA. Australia is ONE country.

I stick with my first answer, these forums suck. The only reason I come here is to read posts that have links to videos.

Continents are big fucking land masses. This makes Terra Australis a continent. Oceania is a region, just as the Carribean or Meditteranian is a region. However, i must stress that i mean no disrespect to New Zealand or anything like that, but the fact is it's just not geographically big enough to be a continent.

Oceania smells like PC bullshit to me, but that's just my opinion. I was never taught that Oceania was a continent. I wouldn't put this down to the Education system over here being Australia-centric, becuase it's not. It's just the way it used to be taught. Hell, most of you tikes are still in school, so you probably know better. But in my day it was Good ol' Australia.

Arent continents named after the continental plate they are associated with?

ie North and South American plates, Antarctic plates, Arctic plate, Europe plate, Asian plate, Pacific plate, Oceania plate, and the African plate.
