First Rap Song

What is the first rap song, and who did it? I am trying to find it, does it go something like "hip hop to the hippy hop and you don't stop", or something?

Mr.Buttocks 03-30-2004 12:28 PM

The first ever rap was performed in a small club in downtown Salt Lake City (a small place called "Bubbu's") by an artist called Daddy Blu. It consisted of 2 lines, they were;

"Welcome to my very first rap song,
it won't take long because I've got to go wash my dong."

At that point Daddy Blu left the stage.

Someone's bound to have it on tape.

dunno anything about rap. I would say maybe around the 80's

Zoner 03-30-2004 12:45 PM

Blondie's "Rapture" was one of the first singles to have a rap in it. Dunno if it's the first, but I'll look into it.

Pyro 03-30-2004 01:54 PM

Rappers Delight was the first Rap hit...but not the first rap song.

bukdez 03-30-2004 03:03 PM

i'm pretty sure there were guys rapping in the late 70's, scratching old rock albums, and funk records... but rapture and Grand Master Flash were probably the first rap that was heard by the masses...

The Pioneers were Grand Masta Flash Run DMC, NWA all great artists who busted rap out into the music scene. I forget the first smash hit though. I never really followed up on any of the 3 much.

He was just repeating the part of his first post that he hoped would narrow the song he was thinking of down and no one paid attention to. He just wanted the answer, not a debate or what everyone thinks the first song actually is.

Tripper 04-01-2004 02:18 AM

Muhammed Ali was the first rapper.

TRIPPAR'S HIPHOP & RAP HISTORY:

DJ Kool Herc was the first person to actually put together hiphop music back in '73 at the famous NY block parties. Then Afrikaa Baambata and Grandmaster Flash appeared on the scene, and shit started to sprout.

As for the emceeing side of things ("RAP" for all you newbs), that came around simply from DJs shouting shit out while playing stuff like "Get Down! Yeah! Word! Throw your hands in the air and wave them like you just dont care" and all that other shit. By the late 70s, rappers started appearing as 'Masters Of Ceremonies' for the block parties or 'MCs' (Rappers).

...and there it is..........

Roswell 04-01-2004 08:24 AM

I believe the very first rap group was actually a small band of guys out of Harlem (I don't know if that's the location, but I believe so. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, correct me), who called themselves "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Their raps actually called for an overthrow of US government, and DJs lost their jobs for playing their songs on the radio. What a wonderful world it would be today is DJs were canned for playing rap.

You're refering to Gil Scott Heron - "The revolution will not be televised" was one song from him in which he talked....There is no rhyming of words in it, so therefore it isn't technically rap it all. The only thing it shares with rap is that it is talking in its nature. I would call that more of a chant than a rap.

I don't believe he was the first hip-hopper, or that he really played much of a part in the creation of rap or hiphop..... although he must of been some sort of inspiration back then.

The reason I don't think he played a big part, is because you can see the clear timeline of the creation of rap and hiphop after he started broadcasting.

Like I said in my post before, rap began as DJ's Masters Of Ceremonies (MCs), who were like the ringmasters or hosts for the later block parties, started reciting whole verses and songs over the DJ's beats.....A quick migration from them simply saying "Throw your hands in the air," "nod ya head" etc.

The first MCs are alot like today's "hype-MCs," Flava Flav, Kid Capri, Fatman Scoop, etc.

P.S - Finally, an interesting thread.

Roswell 04-01-2004 03:47 PM

I see. I was under the impression it was the name of a band. I am enlightened.
