yeah, i already read that post.....helpful, but doesnt solve my problem. wondering if anyone has had this problem themselves with a linksys router and MOHAA......

madrebel 01-27-2002 02:30 AM

what kinda firewall?

handgrenade 01-27-2002 02:33 AM

its a linksys router....the built-in firewall is Network Address translation (NAT), which restricts access to internal IP's from external sources, UNLESS the port the external user is accessing on has been forwarded.....thats why i need to know if im using the correct ports or not. any ideas?

ORDGordo 01-27-2002 03:20 AM

same problem here.
same router, same ports forwarded
same result.
an unconnected server.

ideas?

Hellbaby2065 01-27-2002 03:24 AM

My advice would be to open a DMZ and use a software firewall. ZoneAlarm has given me trouble, but TinyFirewall may work better.

Hellbaby2065 01-27-2002 03:27 AM

If all else fails, use port forwarding and give out your IP address to those who want to join the game. Also, there is a function on the forwarding page of my linksys router called "Port Triggering". You may want to set this up and see if it works.

Chrisc1730 01-27-2002 03:28 AM

I have one but 5 port and im having some trouble too.

madrebel 01-27-2002 04:14 AM

sounds like youre getting a loop.

imagine if you will

@ = external
$ = router
% = server
# = you

@----->$--forwards to---%

packet comes in for port 12203 hits the nat box gets routed to the server

whats happening is

#----->$----%---->$----->%---etc

you, send a packet to the server on port 12203, it first hits the router the router send its to the server....the server then sends back the info destined for the client on port 12203....that packet hits the router and gets forwarded back to the server(since all traffic on those ports gets forwarded to the server). So instead of it getting back to the client it just loops.

Thats what sounds like is happening anyways.

btw, before you go thinking youre secure with that router. youre not. a packet filtering firewall(what you have) is the least secure of all firewalls.

DMZ the server and put a software firewall on it. You will have the same level of security doing it that way.

ReBel 01-27-2002 04:30 AM

I am using a LinkSys router also, and have been hosting just fine without using the DMZ feature.

Here's what I'm doing:
1.) Static IPs (DHCP disabled).
2.) Advanced, Filters - DISABLE SPI, ENABLE Block WAN Request, ENABLE Multicast Pass Thru, ENABLE IPSec Pass Thru.
3.) Advanced, Forwarding, Ports 12200 to 12220 (both UDP and TCP).

Thats it, hope this helps.

Quik 01-27-2002 04:32 AM

DHCP disabled in router or server PC? Disabling DHCP in router with a dynamic IP is not good.

thanks for the reply madrebel. I understand your logic, but would have to say that i use this method of port forwarding succesfully with several other games without trouble. also, my LAN pcs can connect to the game server fine, its just the internet players that cant see the host - because the port is not open as it should be....

I think it must be the fact that EA has tied the MP game so closely to gamespy - im assuming that there are other ports/protocols involved that might be messing things up due to gamespy. Im going to try that 'all seeing eye' app and see if my server is visible on that sucker....

also, I know my server isnt secure just cause its behind a packet filtering firewall, but im running windows 2000 server on a domain with IPsec, password protection, account lockout, intrusion detection, etc.....im pretty locked down, bro. BUT, before you say, well, thats youre problem...its not. i host games all the time without problems.

madrebel 01-27-2002 04:53 AM

sux to be you heh http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/wink.gif

uhmm i know from the first retail version of this game there was port "funkiness". port 12203 wouldnt bind from the command line server. so it wouldnt surprise me at all if they did something to mess up your setup.

btw im impressed someone in the windows world that understands security kudos to you good sir knight http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/wink.gif

ReBel 01-27-2002 07:54 AM

Quik - I don't know what your network setup is, but disabling DHCP in the router is no big deal. Just disable it, and asssign a static IP under TCP/IP in your computer(s).
If you are using the default IP router scheme, the router will be 192.168.1.1 - just make your computer(s) something like 192.168.1.5, 192.168.1.6, etc.

Hellbaby2065 01-27-2002 08:02 AM

You don't need to turn off DHCP at the router to assign yourself a static IP address.

Just set up your comp with a compatible IP, such as 192.168.1.4 ,
and your router will still recognize it with DHCP on, as it would assign a similar address anyway.

handgrenade 01-27-2002 10:26 AM

ive been hosting games for quite a while on my linksys 4 port router. normally, i just forward the ports necessary to the dedicated server and the game is visible from the internet no problem. But MOHAA is given me (and others I know) many problems with this. I have forwarded ports 12201-12210 (udp and tcp) to my server. its NOT visible on the internet or gamespy. I even forwarded ALL the ports listed on page 14 of the installation manual. still no deal. The only way i can get it to work is by placing the server IP address in the DMZ. then its visible to the internet, but its wide open, and that makes me nervous....

anybody out there had similar troubles. If so, what have you tried? any ideas?

Check out my answer to the following post. There are several ports that GameSpy uses:

ive emailed 2015 and asked them what ports the game is currently set to run on. If they respond, ill post it here. many people with this problem....

madrebel 01-28-2002 03:29 AM

yeah theyve done a great job with the dedicated server so far http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

jtravnick 01-30-2002 10:31 AM

handgrenade did you ever get your server to work? if so what did you do? im using a netgear router and have the same problem as you got off the phone with ea today and they told me that it was gamespy got an email from gamespy they said it was the game and dont even get me started on the crap i mean help netgear has told me.

madrebel 01-31-2002 11:09 AM

pay attention kids there is a lesson in here

DONT BUNDLE GAYSPY WITH YOUR GAME!

handgrenade 02-01-2002 08:35 AM

nah, no word from either 2015, EA, or gamespy.....geez, is this stuff so hard to plan for? HELLO, we just need to know what freekin ports to forward? man, these guys can code some great C++, but they need to get a network guy ont he crew. this is sad that we have to open up our servers on the DMZ just to host a game.....thats so rookie.

madrebel 02-01-2002 10:49 AM

or they need to not fuck with an already perfect dedicated server model.

of all the games ive run on my dual t1s this is by far the lagiest. even with the rate turned way down it still lags.

CokeFrog22 02-02-2002 12:11 AM

In order for your server to be viewed by Gamespy(and you are behind a firewall), you need to open Port 12300 as well.

Arkan 02-22-2002 12:23 AM

ReBel

I used your settings and for unknown reasons it works without DMZ having the same IP as the host computer. From my understanding, this shouldn't work but it does. Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me and explain why it works this way.

The only problem i have now is my server name doesn't show on GameSpy and when you go to join, it says "Server Full". My friend chooses "Launch anyway" and he gets in. The ports i have forwarded are: 12200 to 12220 with TCP & UPD enabled. What ports do you have forwarded ReBel?

Thanks for all the info guys http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

rizzy7 02-22-2002 12:55 AM

Hey guys. I been watching this post forever and been trying everything. The only thing I don't understand is how you guys enable TCP and UDP. Do you use Port Forwarding numbers? I have a NetGear Router, with a single IP address running into it. 2 computers hooked up with default IP's of 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 I have 12200, 12300, 12203-12206 so far for Port Fowarding. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

when i did this i had to manually put in the DNS servers or i couldn't get to the internet...is that normal?

Arkan 02-22-2002 10:53 AM

Hey Rizzy, i don't know about the Netgear settings but in the Linksys settings, under "Port Forwarding", there is an option box for TCP & UPD. If Netgear doesn't have it, i wouldn't worry about it since it's probably set by default.

Reading all these posts, i can see we need a Forum room just on hosting and such where people with different systems can post their settings. When all my stuff runs flawless, i'll be sure to start a new post with the settings. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Arkan 02-22-2002 10:59 AM

ok Rizzy, i found this post in a different forum but it's about a "Netgear Router". I hope this info helps you:

[[[[My config, with a netgear router (same basic thing)

router IP- 192.168.0.100
Computer-192.168.0.1
Kid's computer-192.168.0.2
All other devices-DHCP from router range 192.168.0.10-192.168.0.50

You only need to forward 2 ports UDP 12201, 12203 (12203, 12300 for full version) to the IP of the computer hosting the server.

Some times I set up a dedicated server on the kids cpu. So i point the ports to that IP address.

From my computer I join the server from the LAN side. This way I have the freedom to quit and do other things with my computer, while people still get a chance to play on my network.

My 24/7 demo server (Chaz's MoH -The Hunt-) is on a buisness class LAN with a very advanced router. However, it's still the same to set it up. Simply forward the 2 ports UDP to the server machine.

It might take a few for your server name to show up on gamespy. I'm sure you checked "use gamespy" when you set the server up. (?)

Now if I can only figure out how to get my private password to work on my dedicated...... It really stinks when you host a server, but can never play on it because it's always full!!!! :-)

Charlie]]]]

Does this help you guys with Netgear?

rizzy7 02-23-2002 11:46 AM

Thanks guys for all the help. Was just wondering how I change my Router IP to 192.168.0.100 from 192.168.0.1 I think once I got that taken care of I would be set. Thanks again for everything. I appreciate it.

I am running a linksys 6 port hub and have a dsl modem. Before I had my computers networked I could host games fine, now I cannot.

All these solutions look great, but I have no idea how to accomplish these things. All that was in the networking package was a drivers disk. So the only things I can access are in the Networking Neihborhood panel such as the networking linksys card, some options of this sort. I would like to be able to host games on gamespy.

I am rather adapt at computers, but this networking stuff is my weakness. If anybody could send me a quick explanation of where to go my e-mail is: jochen_blitz@hotmail.com and I will try to remember to visit this forum area again...thanks.
