Classical music

Any of you guys into classical music? I recently got very interested in composition and took a couple courses in my highschool for Theory and Jazz Improvization. I've come to develop an appreciation for some of the music that comes out today...especially orchestral music. I'm not advanced enough to sit down and write an orchestral song, but I've started on what they call "4 part choral writing" (with a bass, tenor, alto, and soprano voice). It doesn't have to be soley "chorus music"; I like to write some brass quartet songs. I've worked on this piece for about 1 week.

Yeah, i've learned this year that jazz really breaks every classical theory rule out there. For example, classical pieces are set in a certain key (D Major or F minor). Jazz is totally opposite. They just put in chords that make some sort of progression.

The easiest jazz progression is the 12 bar blues. If you were to create a G blues it would look like this:

[code:02ab1]4 measures of a G7 chord which would be known as tonic
2 measures of C7 chord which would be called (Submediant or IV [roman numerals for 4])
2 measures of G7 (tonic again)
Then 1 measure of D7 (which is called dominant or V for 5) and then 1 measure of C7.
Finally 2 of G7.

You can insert things called ii-V-I's which are really common in jazz.[/code:02ab1]

The progression is based off of one scale...it's really hard to explain it all in a way. I'm working on a couple jazz pieces though. I'll post some more of my stuff up.

yeah plz do

i think music theory is insane

Garry,

I love Jazz and Classical music. From Louis Armstrong to Mozart, I also enjoy a variety of "reproductions" of ancient and historic music.
From classic Irish folk music to early American music like Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie.

There is this amazing feeling of antiquity and tradition when listening to music from such histotic sources. Im not certain how old you are, but I find it refreshing and admirable that at least some of todays youth can be moved by such things.

I'm only 17 (soon to be 18). I really never liked any rock music, grindcore, pop, or any of that crap. I always liked jazz and classical...since I play trumpet in an orchestra and a jazz band I have more of a sense of appreciation than the average person.

Old Reliable 05-30-2004 10:46 AM

um, i have over 100 cds of jazz and classical...its my mainstay

It's weird how I look at music now that I actually understand it. Classical and Jazz seem to be so much more complex compared to some of that stupid pop and heavy metal crap (yeah, i called them stupid). hellfire:

TonyMontana 05-30-2004 01:34 PM

my dad has some cole porter cd's. They are pretty good

Kemikalie 05-30-2004 01:50 PM

i´ve always listened to jazz, but then not the early swing pieces, more like miles davis, chick corea, joushaa redman, wayne shorter etc. still, i listen to a lot of types of music, all from classsical to hardrock. right now im really in to this fusion guy, john scofield.

and pieces sounds good, keep it up. get some programs : Reason (2) Recycle and Cubase.

Pick Axe 05-30-2004 02:10 PM

I'm starting to get into playing classical guitar pieces. There so intricate. Then again, I try to play some of everything from Bach to Hendrix.

Fireal 05-30-2004 02:31 PM

I like jazz A LOT. But not really classical.

Madmartagen 05-30-2004 02:37 PM

Not a big fan of jazz myself, but then I could be thinking about the wrong kind of jazz (ie Kenng G). I do like classical music though, I like Howard Shore, John Williams rock: , and Mozart. I listen to KMZT in La when I drive around at night. About half of my cds are soundtracks too.

Fireal 05-30-2004 02:45 PM

Haha, kenny g blows ass. Download some Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and chet baker.

Madmartagen 05-30-2004 02:47 PM

I like Joe Satriani, but that isnt jazz is it, prolly rock.

yeah, Kenny G is nothing without his circular breathing....he can't do anything else. [sarcasm]I've got breathing down, so maybe I should make a CD[/sarcasm] On a serious note, listen to some Miles Davis, some good stuff by Louis Armstrong at the later part of his career (probably more appealing to the masses), Chuck Mangione (he's a latin trumpet player that plays in small groups), Arturo Sandoval, Wynton Marsalis, and even Frank Sinatra.

EVERYONE must download stuff by the "GRP All-Star Big Band"....just amazing skill ed:

As for classical guitar, that stuff is amazing. I wish i could play guitar for that reason. I wish more people looked into playing classical guitar--it'll help with technique and maybe it could carry over into some of the other styles that the musician plays.

Your right, it does help with technique. It helps you work on speed and accruacy. And even some of the simplest pieces (like Borree) sound really intricate and complex.

Pick Axe 05-30-2004 10:13 PM

Here's a Classical guitar piece, an invention by Bach.

[url:8541c]http://www.cky2k.org/upload/uploads/bachinvent.113.mid[/url:8541c]

I didn't make this, I just exported it from Power Tab (a great free program, by the way) The midi track sounds better in Power tab, so, if you have the editor, here it is.

TonyMontana 05-30-2004 10:16 PM

miles davis is great

KTOG 05-31-2004 12:19 AM

I love classical music. Inever really listen to much Jazz. However i love using jazz chords while playing guitar. You have to stretch your hand out so far for many of the chords, pain in the ass.

snipes 05-31-2004 02:23 AM

I like some classical music.

Some can be really boring to me, but others can really get me thinking.

I really like the music on most soundtracks...I don't know the conductors by name but some soundtracks I really like are SPR and BOB, and the soundtracks for MOH; things like that are where my heart for classical lies.

Funny you should say that. My good friend's brother did the soundtrack for a few Medal of Honor titles. HIs name is Christopher Lennertz. I'm not sure if his website it up again, last i checked, it was down for construction:

What program did you use to make those?

KTOG 05-31-2004 01:22 PM

It looks like Finale to me

ShagNasty 05-31-2004 01:27 PM

I love jazz, well all music, but rap, and that’s not music it’s talking in rhymes over samples.

Listen to some John Zorn, or Estradasphere great jazz.

True classical guitarists have long finger nails and finger pick exclusively. And believe it or not the metal has a lot of classical influence. Listen to deep purples Ritchie Blackmore.

Ps don’t get me wrong on rap/hiphop if they use real bands I like it. I just hate samples and the same damn bass beat in every damn song. Well I am sure its not the same beat but they are close.

And yeah, geforce, I did use Finale. It's a professional program that costs around $600....::cough:: warez :::cough::: I used to use another pro program called Sibelius. It was pretty good, but my friend and I wanted to swap music files all the time so we could listen and see eachothers compositions. So, now i'm using Finale; I heard that most pros use that program though (comparable to Microsoft and Apple)
