Help with resume...

Hey there, I know most of you guys know how to do these...I havnt made one since grade school...ive got the main part done...but I need a 'Cover Letter'...what exactly is that?

Da_Bian 08-13-2004 10:53 PM

A cover letter is basically your introduction to yourself. In it you state how good you are and what you have achieved.

Most companies / employers nowadays, though, prefer short and to the point cover letters. So keep it short and simple. Try to knock 'em on the head in the first four lines to make them think, "Wow this dude rawks."

Write two cover letters, one normal and one totally over the top. You'll notice you'll get more results with the over the top one.

Most of my cover letters here just state which job I want, where I found the ad, where I live, what times I'm available, my resume is attached and you can contact me at any time (between...etc).

Example of a standard letter I do here:
[quote:89b09]Dear Sir / Madam,

I would like to apply for the ______ position in your company, which was advertised in ________. Please consider me and I assure you, you will not be disappointed.

I'm experience in all aspects of ________.

I live in _________, _____.

My resume is attached. Please feel free to contact me for further details.

Yours faithfully,

Shitfor Brains.[/quote:89b09]
The main reason I don't go into detail here (in Taiwan) is because most people can't read English too well, and I'd just end up confusing them. You may require more detail for your letter.

Just remember to sell yourself as much as you can, so they don't throw your resume on the "meh" pile.

Good luck!

p.s. I remember once I found some site that'll automatically write cover letters and resumes for you. Google and you might find it.

I know MS word has templates for all this stuff, fill in the blanks, and it explains what it is as well.

I usually trash generic, fill-in-the-blanks cover letters like that without even looking at the resume, and I assume that like 99% of the applicants you send the cover letter by email and attach a resume as a doc of some sort. See, once you get enough of these letters you be kind of like surfing websites and ignoring banner ads "by default". Sometimes you get these letters with the wrong company filled in too. rolleyes:

Seriously, if you won't even take the time writing something that at least look a little bit "custom wrote" for my project or company you can apply elsewhere. But that's just me, nitpicking and being an a-hole and all that, yeah, but also I employ people. the_finger:

When you list experiences on your cover letter, list the ones they want as stated in the job description, dont start listing a bunch of things you know, thats what the resume is for. Customizing it is good, but try to keep in mind that they sift through dozens of these things at once, so make the first few lines count.

You really want to catch their eye? Put a picture of you plowing their mom on the cover page. It worked for a buddy of mine... but the wierd part was that it was his dad that he gave the resume to.
