I want a designer baby. You guys put too high a price on life.

Himmler 10-18-2004 03:20 PM

what a waste of money

Madmartagen 10-18-2004 03:49 PM

damn, that means that ho gets child support from two guys oOo:

SoLiDUS 10-18-2004 04:38 PM

I think it has potential to help prevent many health problems. We're GO for launch!

SoLiDUS 10-18-2004 04:45 PM

Although unrelated to the article, wouldn't you rather have a genetically perfect baby?
Why play the nature lottery when a child can be given vastly superior genes thanks to
science?

I mean, why would I use a bicycle to travel 100 miles when faster, more efficient
means are available ? Back on topic: you're going to care for the child no matter if
it's natural or genetically engineered... so why not give it the best chances at a good
life ? If it's available, I say use it.

Coleman 10-18-2004 04:49 PM

that car won't give you lip and punch you in the face when you tell it to go take out the trash! biggrin:

Just let Mother Nature do her thing. She's been doin' pretty well if you ask me.

SoLiDUS 10-18-2004 04:53 PM

Improving on nature is something we do best. You'd rather sleep on the
ground or in some primitive wood shack than in the house you have now ?

Nature gave us life and the means to improve on our condition: why stay
at our present level when so much more can be achieved ? Progress, man.

Sounds too close to what Herr Hitler had in mind for my liking.

Of course you do! j/k

The idea of creating genetically "pure" children makes me slightly uneasy. I'm away to watch Gattica.

imported_Fluffy_Bunny 10-18-2004 05:14 PM

I wouldn't want a GM baby I'd want my own kid ty very much not some freak show, engineered, baby spazbot. rolleyes:

it's not like these kids are going to have no emotions and act like robots. they would be normal humans like anyone else. How they act and behave is based apon how the parents raze them and influence them. they won't be some evil villains attempting to take over the world... Thats what people think of whne they ere of this type of stuff.

Madmartagen 10-18-2004 05:57 PM

If they make these genetically perfect babies, what do they do with the ones that arent perfect? The knowledge and capabilities to do this science adn research is interesting, but are the costs and liabilities worth it?

But seriously, I really don't want anything to ever come close to "the perfect human". Don't ask me why to back it up, because the answer lies in the natural laws that are unknown.

SoLiDUS 10-18-2004 06:26 PM

If I understand correctly, it is:

- okay to develop methods of curing ailments, but eliminating them from the human genome isn't...

- okay to devise new ways of dealing with less favorable human traits but eliminating them from the human genome so as to avoid this complication, isn't...

Right. rolleyes:

Gattaca had it right and whether you like it or not, we will eliminate problems
from the human genome. I just hope we learn from this movie and ensure a
future with no genetic profiling. Then again, the best candidate should always
win...

I really don't think humans should alter our make-up. I believe things happen for a reason and people should die (not trying to sound heartless here, just trying to be realistic).

It is really hard to put into words. We have to remember, alot of this stuff goes back to religion and so forth...

Maplegyver 10-18-2004 06:49 PM

they should make perfect babies only available to the rich

SoLiDUS 10-18-2004 06:50 PM

Your limitations are self set. Once you outgrow this tired shell, you will be in
a position to accept a better one: one compatible with human advancement.
I'll leave this topic alone now.
