What video card would YOU choose

Im building a bare minimum cpu for my 12 yr old brother for his B-day/Xmas....but have had trouble deciding what Vid card to get for him.

choices

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 231&depa=0

or

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 198&depa=0

He wont be doing alot on it...mostly school work, maybe surfing the internetz, and playing 10 dollar jewel case games like deer hunter and marine jaxsun sniper...so he doesnt need some uber-1337 super system

when he does go online its usually http://www.nick.com, http://www.miniclip.com and yahoo launch to watch music videos...

any input would be appreciated..

a bare one, im guessing a GF 5200m or GF4 mx440

Poseidon 11-10-2004 12:21 PM

yea a mx440 will be fine - it runs most of my games fine.

prolly a amd 2000+ should do the job too (about a 1.6ghz) and 512mb ram should be fine.

All good brand names

for cheap

and will run quite well for what you want...

Don't buy a MX-440 unless he wants to play games of the past. It won't run games such as MoH:PA, so I doubt it would even have a chance of running Halo2 when it comes out on PC maybe 1 year from now.

Well the Nvidia vs ATI is debable. The are pretty much dead even at high and low end - with mid going to Nvidia.

AMD is beating Intel across the board.

And Crotchpirates are far better than Asspirates.

geRV 11-10-2004 06:33 PM

Intels still faster at video encoding last time i looked at some numbers, so if it comes down to someone that wants fast video encoding, then intel > amd.

Intel is a head by a little bit in Video Encoding. But the A64 is leaps and bounds ahaead of P4 in the everything. The good definitely outways the bad and I'd take a 90nm 3200+ over a 3.6EE anyday.

BTW I'm an Intel user.

If you have the 3.6 EE and your wanting the 3200 64..then your the one who is obviously at fault...because Either you set it up wrong or something because that chip is second fastest on the market oOo:

Akuma 11-10-2004 06:45 PM

Yet a 3200+ out performs in gaming or at least extremely close. Not to mension the 90nm A64s are incredible overclockers. 2.8ghz on air is pretty easy. At that speed the EEs don't even compare.

and there is no 3.6 ee yet
Only 3.46 EE also... note that the 939 pins are exceptional in gaming but if you look..they bumped them a bit too much with the voltage resulting in higher fps"Amd"
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2004110 ... ctx9_games
Besides...Intel Has been known to overclock a 2.8C to like a 3.6 Ghz

Nyck 11-10-2004 08:51 PM

GAYNESS ABOUND fucking links annoy:

its these two

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 231&depa=0

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 198&depa=0

Its gonna be a shitty sempron processor with 512 mb of pc 2100...bunch of spare parts i have laying around.....

so he wont be video encoding....he may search for porn...just hope its not gay porn....

Short Hand 11-10-2004 08:56 PM

my god, might as well run integrated if your gonna run that shit... Literally, an average onboard intigrated system is the equivelent, cough up an extra 25 bucks and slap a 5200, or 9600SE in there man, SERIOUSLY it is a well put investment.

Short Hand 11-10-2004 09:01 PM

spend an extra 13 bucks, it will be worth it. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductde ... 017&DEPA=0

Now that I see the links I see what he means by low end cards. I imagine a MX series might out preform a radeon 9700. Go with Short Hand's link.

no way in hell, the geforce 4mx = low end budget pos. Same with the one I posted, but for 13 bucks it a huge huge huge performance gap etc. a 9700 is still a pretty powerful card only to be outperformed by newer gen cards aka "9800, 5900, x800 6500 etc etc."
