I tried twice to enlist. The first time, I was denied because I had open-heart surgery as a child. Then, the recruiter contacted me because my IQ has me on some federal list. I drove to Columbia (state capitol) to meet with a senior Intel recruiter and, after passing my first interview, was disqualified during the second when I mentioned my heart surgery.

Anyway, deserters are sorry. You sign up with the military to defend a country you love, not for no reason other than getting money for college. Obviously, a patriot is going to fight a lot harder than some dick cheese who wanted a free ride. Let them desert, don't need them anyway. They're the same sissies who break down in combat situations and get good soldiers killed.

Whatever, they just didnt want to fight or die for that matter in a useless and unjust war. Keep runnin boys, the man is tryin to bring u down.

I actually served in the Navy for 4 years bud. What I am saying is that you havent started your tour, so dont start criticizing others who have already joined if they decide not to fight in Iraq. From what ive heard, its a pretty nasty place.

They have concientous objection status for people who dont want to fight. You can get reassigned or serve your time in jail. I belive its a risk you take when you join, but look at the track record of the military actually giving a shit about its own soldiers. You get injured, you get the good old rim job of fighting for medication just like HMOs. You get poisoned or exposed to toxins or agents, good luck getting anyone to help you after the war. You sign up to serve your country, and yes that means whenever they call you, but you do have a right to choose between serving or doing jail time. i dont know about desertion, but nobody wants you in your unit after youve made it obvious you arent willing to fight for the cause. You going to mow down a group of women and children just becuause your seargent or Lt tell you to? you going to take that truck and humvee 45 miles to a checkpoint w/o a convoy? like someone else said, its their loss. what is the point of spending millions of dollars training these people if you send them in combat with shitty equiptment, divided support from home, an unclear and possibly fraudulent reason for going to war in the first place, and rampant war profiteering. Im not happy they are deserting, im offended why people instantly call them cowards and traitors when half of the people in this country dont support the war. The article said they tried to get reassigned out of Iraq (though I dont know if they req Afghanistan) but they were turned down. They also apparently lost their application for concientous (sp?) objection status. They had a choice between running to Canada or doing time. I dont know what I would have done, but they were in a tough spot. This war is fucked, guys, people are having their tours extended w/o an end in sight and they are being sent off on some crusade w/o a real clear objective other than to police a country we fucked up. The point of my rant is simply to not immediately call them cowards, pussies and traitors.

I get one day off, and on that day, I get what little time I have to hang out with some freinds. I work 6 to 7 days a week to pay for college. So you telling me all this bullshit, just demonstrates how much of an arrogant asshole you are. I don't know if it was the underprivileged childhood which makes you think you have the right to tell people the shit you do....., but you should stop, reevaluate yourself and start thinking in a different manner. I think his National Guard service is still in question, he signed up for the NG but there's still some talk of him going AWOL during his time there. Even so, if he was so patriotic why didn't he sign up for the "real deal" and get his ass shipped out to Vietnam? If he wanted to go he could have, but he didn't.
