Doctor Duffy 12-21-2004 10:20 AM

Yeah we have that... I think it may have to do with Canadian & American banks. I have had problems with my debit card in Canada before.

I do that at King Soopers all the time...though Im not sure what kind of card it is, its just the dark one my dad always gives me when I got to pick up some tamatoes or something.....

...if you're Canadian, what are you doing shopping in the U.S.?

TGB! 12-21-2004 10:30 AM

If youre using a debit card without the visa logo or within a system not recognized by certain P.O.S. machines - no it wont work. Its the same here or when you use an ATM machine.

Hardly "behind" - different banking system.

Difference in currencies. I deal with a lot of people who own a condo at our resort and live in Canada. They have to get a Visa because Visa defaults to the currency of the country it's run in. Obviously, Interac doesn't do that.

Only other option for them is to operate a US currency account for drafts.. but you'd still probably need a Visa.

Damn Canadians. Cept Zoner.

Maplegyver 12-21-2004 11:13 AM

we have debit aswell.

There's you answer in a nut shell. Get yourself a visa/mastercard logo debit card and you should be golden.

geRV 12-21-2004 11:50 AM

America is a little arse? eek:

ninty 12-21-2004 11:51 AM

When I was in Ft. Lewis in March I was trying to get something to eat and I went to about 3 different fast food places. Me in my ultimate wisdom decided not to bring any American money, but I thought my debit card would be fine. Turns out my debit card doesn't have a visa or mastercard logo on it, and therefore does not work in the states. Got some money off friends for some burgers. Twas all good. Now I have my credit card so I can just use that if I don't have cash.

However, it is true that Calgary has the highest number of interac transactions per capita in the world. That might go for Canada as well. A lot of people use debit here. Infact, I just used it this morning.

well if you are the only ones that except it then I could see you having the most transactions. wallbash:

get a Visa or Mastercard, we will take your money

I'm saying debit/interac transactions as a whole. It doesn't really matter if certain systems don't work with each other, the principle is the same. That includes US/European systems.

ninty 12-21-2004 12:24 PM

the fees i usually incur are about 1-2 dollars a month for using my debit card. If you want to take money out from another banks atm then it's like $2 service charge. i always try to find my bank to take money out.

you can get a debit card to draw money from a specific account where fees are minimal. you can get some where the first 30 or 60 times you use it it's free, but after that you have to pay each time. I don't even know what mine is, but i'm usually only paying a couple bucks a month so its ok.

a visa or mastercard one is a credit card, and the thing jibber is talking about is his actual money, interac takes money out of your bank account and a visa or mastercard just charges you that amout of money and then crazy intereset. 2 diffrent things....

Tripper 12-21-2004 01:21 PM

We have Interac down here, except we call it Eftpos and we've had it for the last decade or so....I've had an eftpos card since I was like 9 - 10 years old, I'm 19 now.

I don't know how I would survive with out the card either....

i've never had a problem using my canadian debit card on an interac machine or atm in the states or the UK, I took pounds out no problem in London, and Us dollars in Texas, the bank adjusted it and it worked out on my next statement...
