antihero = common or everyday man who 'bucks' the 'system' ie. goes against the mainstream rules of accepted modern society's values.

i would agree strongly with jNj and add the following :

1. the stranger from any of the early sergio westerns
2. james dean from Rebel Without A Cause
3. kelly from Kelly's Heros
4. cpt. virgil (steve mcqueen) "the cooler king" from The Great Escape
5. paccino in Dog Day Afternoon

and though i wouldn't put him on my top 20 list of great antiheros, yeah even napoleon.

Frank Miller's Batman is the archtypal anti-hero.

The characters in Sin City are anti-heros (Marv, Dwight, Hartigan etc.).

One could argue Conan of Cimmeria is an anti-hero as well (the one in literature not the movies rolleyes: annoy: ).

Sgt>Stackem 03-04-2005 09:52 AM

good point but no; that is the everyman finding his morals after living a life of greed and earthliness. it's the St. Paul on the road to Damascus syndrome.

Achilles is not an anti-hero, he is a hero in the true classical sense... this means he posseses the qualities which define a hero in an epic story, in this case Achilles conforms to the Homeric Hero formula, which in part is based on his mythical actions...

Bucknub 03-04-2005 11:26 AM

Macbeth (Mrs. or Mr.) is definitely NOT an Anti-Hero. . .if hes an Anti-Hero than so is Richard 3 since they both brutalized their way to the top for selfish reasons. . .

Hell Macbeth at one point says "why change. . .ive killed all these people so far. . .keepin on killin is easier than not now" -
