The Pope's death...or no death or whatever

I don't know about this...there is reports all over Fox when i was watching it about the Pope had died int he vatican, but CNN is reporting that the Vatican is denying that the Pope is dead.

This entire situation is pretty weird.

Jin-Roh 04-01-2005 01:20 PM

Mr.Buttocks 04-01-2005 01:26 PM

He's not dead yet. Fox sucks. so does CNN

Pyro 04-01-2005 01:26 PM

Well the Pope is polish and probably one of the best to hold the position.

I guess they figured out they fucked up enough having italians and french as the pope.

Mr.Buttocks 04-01-2005 01:28 PM

Let the Pope die in peace. He's done alot. Hey, maybe we can get a North American Cardinal as the next pope!...............................or not. Paul II broke that 600 year streak of Italian Popes. I doubt anything big will change now especially with all of those child molesting stories.

Bucknub 04-01-2005 02:37 PM

Top 5 contenders diverse group

Dionigi Tettamanzi, 71, Italy - the Archbishop of Milan, is the frontrunner. Tettamanzi is a pastor and an intellectual and as someone close to John Paul II, insiders say he he represents continuity, but with new ideas. Tettamanzi can count on the support of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who heads the bishops' congregation, and Camillo Ruini, head of the Italian Church. He's also close to Opus Dei, the ultraconservative Catholic group.

In 2002, after serving as the head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, he was named the head of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of Sacraments. Arinze is a conservative who takes a hardline position on abortion and contraception and denounces homosexuality.

Christoph Schonborn, 60, Austria - Archbishop of Vienna. Schonborn is titled aristocracy related to every European royal family. Also a brilliant theologian with sensitivity to the Christian East, orthodoxy and Eastern bloc Catholics. But his relatively young age and that he comes from the German camp could work against him.

Angelo Scola, 64, Italy - the Patriarch of Venice. A scholar and a moderate, Scola is likely to have the backing of Opus Dei.

Severino Poletto, 72, Italy - the Archbishop of Turin. Poletto was named Bishop of Asti last year. His prospects derive from his spiritual and pastoral qualities and his links to Vatican secretary of state, Angelo Sodano

So the next one can be indeed black. Way to go with St-Malachias' prophecies. oOo:

Coleman 04-01-2005 04:47 PM

damn Italy.

I wonder why their selection would be someone that is so old (70's) and can die next year. John Paul II has been around for a while which gave pretty good stability and consistency.

Alex D 04-01-2005 07:22 PM

Interesting article [url=http://slate.msn.com/id/2089815/fr/ifr/nav/ais/:cd6c4]here[/url:cd6c4]:

So, who will the next pope be—a black, a Hispanic, an American, or a Jew?

No, it's not a joke. All four are real possibilities.
---

If they select somebody that is less than 65, then he'll stick around long. If he's older than 70, he won't. Complex matter it is oOo:

The pope's passing is very sad, but we need not lose sight of the real issue here. Catholics have a habit of deifying most of their figures. They refer to the pope as the "holy father". Now, unless my protestant upbringings have been misaken, the hoky father is God. There is one God, and one Savior. Treating the pontiff like a devine source is a mockery of God. He is not devine, but he is possessed of the most devine power a mortal man can have: the power to spread God's word and love. Stop thinking he's a hokly individual deigned by God or whatever, that's very medievel thinking. The Catholic church needs to learn to live in it's own time.

I believe the term "holy father" is not really mean to be taken literally. It is "holy" because of the position investment as God's top wordkeeper, but it is not an automatic step to saint-ness - that's clear. And "father" is because of the position of priest, as every priest is being called "Father". Indeed the Church needs to keep moving forward, but without loosing the trail.

It's sad but I only want him to stop suffering and to embrace his next journey. He had already done many crucial things in his long papacy. I wonder who's going to succeed him.
