Which mp3 player??

Ok.. I get paid at the end of this month and will be looking for a mp3 player (looking at spending upto £150

Here are my choices:

Creative Micro usually £130
Ipod mini usually £130

or

My friend is selling his 40gb sony mp3 payer for £140

is this worth it? I wouldnt need 40gb so is it worth it to get the smaller 5gb ones?

Any other suggestions of other good mp3 players?

Zoner 04-13-2005 11:18 AM

FYI:

150 GBP = 284 USD

Carry on.

i have an ipod 20gb, and i love it, its compact enough to fit in my front pocket, but the headphones suck ass, and i have been using my wraparounds this past month or so

still, the ipod is reliable, easy to use, and stylish

but if it were up to me, id save for another while and just buy a PSP beer:

i have the zen and so far im pretty happy with it ... some things that piss me off about it tho :

:touch pad is WAY too sensitive. if you have it in your pocket face down and walk the track will change on every step.

:track shuffle function isnt all that great ... with a play list of over 400 songs i sometimes hear the same song come around 2/3 times each time im listening.

: battery life seems to be pretty good and charge time doesnt take that long. i can usually listen to it for about 4+ ( i wanna say more ) without having to charge. plus it comes with an extra battery.

: software is pretty decent. you can edit mp3 tags for multiple files at once.

thats all i can think of right now.

thats a pretty good price for the zen if its 5gig.

i really dont see why you would need anything over 4/5 gigs. i dont think i have filled mine up yet ( 5 gig ) and usually have at least a gig or more free. i have over 30 gigs or mp3s. you can get a zen micro for around 200 bucks.

I have the same beefs with my old 6GB Nomad Jukebox. Well, all but the touchy buttons. Isn't there a "Lock" switch on the Zen?

The random/shuffle on the Nomad sucks. If you happen to switch to another song manually, it totally fucks up the "randomness" and songs that you just heard will come back around again. I've noticed patterns while n shuffle as well. Not true random, it's just some quasi-random sequence it seems.

Pyro 04-13-2005 02:03 PM

fuck shipping illd rive and get it off you.

Short Hand 04-13-2005 02:05 PM

130bucks its yours, ill throw in a usb 2.0 card as well. (one for your computer)

Bleuachdu 04-13-2005 02:09 PM

I have a 40Gb iPod ed: I really like it, and i've used iTunes since it was available for windows.

However, last night I put it in the cradle to sync it and it took a nose dive... It's a long story but for whatever reason it said it was out of juice and needed to be charged (the cradle is supposed to charge it via USB) even though it had 1/2 battery life when I plugged it in. After I plugged it in to sync, my PC wouldn't recognize it and it kept flashing the "plug me in" icon, even though it should've recognized that it was plugged in and had decent battery life left.

Anyhow, I plugged it in to the old fashioned wall charger overnight and it works fine this morning. I haven't tried to sync it again yet, but will tonight. Cross your fingers for me.

any major disadvantages of the ipod mini or any advantages compared to the micro (and visa versa)

Akuma 04-13-2005 02:54 PM

Which ever is cheaper. If the iPod is only a little more, do for that.

yeah there is a lock switch but i have no idea what its used for :blush.

i read an article in people or some mag that was about people bitching about how shitty the ipod shuffles shuffle funtion is. ... apparently a shit load of people are bitching about how bad it is about playing the same sequence of songs over and over ... i dont think the zmicro is quite as bad as what the article was saying but its still pretty shitty....

All I want is something to play my mp3's

Coleman 04-13-2005 04:38 PM

Ok, i've done massive amounts of research because I was in your shoes a few weeks ago. If you want a non-bias answer go to http://www.cnet.com and look at the video reviews of the micro and ipod mini.

The Micro is the way to go in my opinion (what I have). First of all, it's a 5gig (soon a 6 gig version is coming out) compared to ipod mini's 4gig drive. It has a radio tuner in it. You can record from the radio (don't know why you would want to though). it also has a built in microphone so you can record voices and such. The zen's sensitivity is not bad at all. I find it very very easy to use (best way to go is just go to the nearest electronic store and try 'em out for yourself). As with Judas' problem and the pocket, all you have to do is flip a little switch on the top to lock it. You can play football with it and it won't change settings when it's on lock mode. I also like how you can edit and customize all of the screens in the zen micro. The battery life is a long-ass time (no where near 24hrs but you get my drift). I do have another battery even though I never really need to use it because I just hook it up to the USB port at night and it'll recharge.

The zen's software is very nice. It's really really easy to edit all of your song information. It comes in handy when you have to fix 837 songs that are named, "Jazz Miles Davis" when they aren't even miles davis. It's real easy to upload songs from CD to your zen micro as well.

The size of the micro is amazing. It's is smaller than my cell phone and is very light. You can see all of the stats on http://www.cnet.com again.

BTW, I got my zen micro for $217 with overnight shipping. I think I got it from http://www.ecost.com . Just check around online before you buy it in the store because chances are, you'll get a WAY better deal on the good ol' interweb.

elstatec 04-14-2005 04:48 AM

All it does is disable the buttons. It was put there to prevent your exact problem; accidental pushing of buttons, volume, etc.

Coleman 04-14-2005 08:47 AM

Oh i forgot to add this. Even my 54 year old dad got a Zen Micro and loves it. He has fairly large fingers and he has no problem operating the device. It goes to show you that the zen micro isn't only for the younger generations.
