april 25th

I or one of the aussies usually throws up a thread for ANZAC day every year, I thought I'd go ahead and do it this year.

Some information:

[url:60428]http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/Gallery/Anzac/Anzacday.htm[/url:60428]

[quote:60428]ANZAC Day (25 April) is observed in New Zealand as a day of commemoration for those who died in the service of their country and to honour returned servicemen and women.

25 April is the anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli in 1915. On the first anniversary of that landing services were held throughout the country in remembrance of the 2,721 New Zealand soldiers who died during the eight-month Gallipoli Campaign. Since 1916 ANZAC Day has evolved to the observance we know today.[/quote:60428]

Basically, the day means a bunch in NZ and Aussie, it's our veterans day/remembrance day type deal...

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

Nice way to show respect annoy:

ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during the First World War (1914-1918).

It's a tradition between our two militaries that began at Gallipoli in 1915. It's a big deal this year even more so than usual because it's the 90th annivesary of that bond. The ANZACs fought together in most 20th century conflicts right up to Vietnam.....

Thanks guys for keeping this thread somewhat civil.....Means a bunch to me.

He is reffering to how England shipped a lot of criminals to Australia during the 1700's and 1800's. Sent for any offence from somethign as small as theft, to larger offences such as murder.

Well there was no need for it in the thread.

Thanks everyone else. It was an awesome day, went to a midday service at the local memorial hall with some buddies, SO many young people nowadays, it's very cool, very respectful. On tv they played ANZAC/Gallipoli documentaries all day, on like 4 channels.... rock:

Do you guys get the day off?

We do, and I think that contributes to it...Although for some reason this year's felt like a spectactular day of events, whereever I went, something about anzac day was on the tip of everyones toungue. I was very proud of my country yesterday.

Unknown_Sniper 04-25-2005 02:47 PM

ya we get certain days off like Presidents day, Independance day, x-mas etc. But usually people are more concerned about how fun the days are. And really its just Independance day thats really patriotic.

Tripper 04-25-2005 02:54 PM

I meant for your memorial/remembrance/veterans day....Do you get that off?

Whatada 04-25-2005 03:38 PM

^ Yes, both Memorial and Veteran's day.

Short Hand 04-25-2005 05:03 PM

400 000 Canadians went over seas in World War 1. 60 000 gave their lives. November 11th is our day of rememberence. We do not get the day off, but we still hold services. I find it hard to find anyone who does not own a poppy.
