and because its a "girl car" rolleyes:

05-04-2005 08:35 PM

how is it a girl car?

9mm BeRetTa 05-04-2005 08:44 PM

Check into it, but I believe these cars recommend the premium fuel. I know I don' want to cough up $2.80 a gallon for gas.

Get the jetta. Just as nice, half the miles and only an 03.

05-04-2005 08:51 PM

hrm, i will have to look into it, i thought they took unleaded.

Its actually the #1 car driven by homosexuals, thats a real fact from a year or so ago, not making that up.

Great choices, but it all depends on Ahow you will use the car, and Bhow long you expect to keep the car.

I don't know you, so I'll just toss some concepts out there...

Lets say you are under 21, and will be working your first few jobs while paying for and using this car. Lets also assume you will not have a job that requires the use of your car, or that will require you to travel long distances.

If this is the case, then the Passat is likley your best call.

. It's cheaper. That means more manageable payments.
. It is likley to cost less for auto insurance since it is older.(They are both clasified as sedans, so age is about the only factor)
. You'll keep it longer and lose less in depriciation.

Now, lets assume you are near or over 21 and have a good job. We'll take into consideration that you may be wanting to travel some...or be required to. We will also assume that you may...within the next few years be getting married or having children.

The Jetta is the best pick.

. It's newer. Your payments may be a bit higher, but it could likley take more of a beating...may even have some warrenty left on it!
. Insurance price should be much less than that of a teenager, so your good.
. You may decide to finally tie the knot and settle down. Or you may just get that promotion at work. Either way, you are lilkey to get rid of the car for something that better suits you in the next few years. By picking the Jetta, you can beat two years of depriciation and save roughly 2-4K on the resale.

But of course these are generalizations. To really pick the right one, we should know all the details... but then again, what are the chances you will actually do what the guys at AA tell you?!?!

05-04-2005 09:08 PM

because i trust people like Arkan, Zoner, and you.

Here is my situation

I am under 21 (18 as of May 30), my great-aunt will be paying for the car. I will have to pay for insurance, and i am planning to get Liability insurance + good student discount (3.57 GPA).

I will be using the car to drive to and from school, and to and from work, and general odd jobs, no long-distance driving. I will take good care of the car, not drag race it or any of that stupid shit that teens are into.

edit:

Jetta takes unleaded
Passat takes premium

You go boy. rock:

Ok,

Here's a bit to explain were I'm getting my info from, cause someone ALWAYS throws a fit.

I sold cars for about a year in Maryland, I worked for a very large dealership that sold: Chevy, Caddies, Olds, Buick, Toyota, Pontiac, & Vetts. I also sold Used cars at the dealership. I went to countless sales seminars & classes on automotive value and salesmanship & sold several cars... never a vett though. annoy:

Anyway, here are a few things to keep in mind when making your decision:

.Statistics show that Americans, on average re-sell thier cars every 2 and half years. So chances are that you will not have this car for ten years. Here is why that is important:
Every year your car loses 10% of its value.Thats an estimate too, some cars hold better than others, but even a brand new Seville (High-end Cadillac) can lose as much as 25% after five years.
So if you want to sell your car, your gonna get the most for it if it's newer.

.Since you will not be paying for the car, I'm not gonna get into finacing and all that, but you should mention to your Great-Aunt that if she pays cash...shouldn't she get a discount? May work..may not.
Since all you will be paying for is insurance and gas, gas is a big deal. Take into consideration how much it would cost to fill-up vs. how much driving you will be doing. You said no big trips, so that takes some concern away from that though.

.Personal taste. We all "see" something in our cars, expecially at your age, so styling and performace will likley be your biggest selling point. And that is gonna be something only you can judge. But here is a tip: Being seen as a homo for the car you drive is childish, and once you get out of school it won't matter. Judge on what you like, damn the man.

With cost out of the picture, I'd say your best choice would be whatever you like best style and performance wise.

Hope I helped.

Did you know that we bombed the shit outta the Mitsubishi plants in WWII? They built the engines for the Kamakazis.
One of these WWII buffs clued me in on that around here somewhere, so credit to whoever it was...

Kinda freaky eh? One of the best selling automotive lines in the US.

Ehh, not so much, hell, volkswagon was Hitlers thing.. BMW made engines for german planes... lots of stuff like that

Milla 05-04-2005 09:52 PM

Volkswagen has terrible quality in their cars. The only thing i can say for them is their suspension is top notch. Other than that...pure shit, my friends a mechanic, says they suck ass.

Mitsubishi > * (for now until i get a Suby)

elstatec 05-04-2005 10:14 PM

Mitsubishis are a one trick pony

european cars > japanese

Old Reliable 05-04-2005 11:42 PM

hey sorry to hear about your choice for a VW, be prepared to spend money on it, they do fall apart....newer car is always better. check out consumer reports

Miscguy 05-04-2005 11:47 PM

Get a honda, cheap gas and it'll run forever. Some of the junkiest hondas iv ever seen were driving down the road.

Drew 05-04-2005 11:52 PM

Get a BMW.

Unknown_Sniper 05-05-2005 12:48 AM

WIll this be your first car? if so then I want to say get the passat as it has a turbo and I promise you that within a year you will be at least interested in a turbo. However the smart person in me says get the Jetta as it is a better first car.

Tripper 05-05-2005 01:33 AM

Don't get a jetta or a passat, your best VW option is a Golf. Generally more of a reliable car....They're alot like Peugeot's 206s/205s/306s - Small, quick, and better quality than any other model of VW....Otherwise steer clear of VW altogether and get a Peugeot 405 or something.

CoMaToSe 05-05-2005 02:28 AM

jetta

Innoxx 05-05-2005 02:36 AM

A Passat is a better first care, IMO. It has top notch safety ratings, a good fuel economy for its class, and it's relatively easy to drive. My mother owned a Passat way back when, we had the car for a good 8 years before we traded it in. Plus, you don't get raped by car insurace because it's a family car.

PS. I don't think they sell Peugots in NA, which is a shame, since I heard they were good cars.

Yeah peugeots are generally great cars....My mother has a 1988 205 cabriolet, she got it about 10 years ago for 10 grand - Since then it's only had a minor clutch problem....My uncle used to be a mechanic for a shop that specialised in european cars, and hes owned 3 different models of Peugeot, he tells me they're overall the best car he's ever driven/maintained....They can take a fair thrashing too...

...Of course, like most european makes, there are a few shithouse lower-end models that just fall apart, but if you talk to someone who knows their shit, they'll steer you in the right direction and set you up with a car that'll last you well.

Unknown_Sniper 05-05-2005 09:40 AM

YA they dont sell puegots in NA I think becuase they use leaded gas or something about emitions. if they did I would probably be looking at one of them. In the near future.

Madmartagen 05-05-2005 10:10 AM

if it has to be one or the other, i would say go with the jetta. but i recommend you get a new toyota or honda. if someones gonna spend 13k on a car, it might as well be new.

Short Hand 05-05-2005 11:53 AM

AVOID the jetta, electrical problems on that pos are far and long... very far and long.

bukdez 05-05-2005 01:46 PM

I could understand if it were a 1.8t or a vr6 vs the passat etc, but it is not, + when you get in their price range their is simply better to buy. Get the passat.

Jakke 05-06-2005 07:43 AM
