New PC

Alright guys, sooner or later this year i plan on building a new computer, I want a AMD 64 with an ATI graphics card, probably a X800. I need a good motherboard to run all of it so i need some ideas. Give me ideas on everything from the mobo down to the memory, i want like 1 gig

geRV 06-02-2005 10:24 PM

New shit coming out all the time, ati's bringing out their own motherboards which support "crossfire" which is 2 cards linked together like sli, but has other benefits of stuff like 14x antialiasing (current maximum is 6x on ati).

Probably better waiting till you're about to order it before getting an idea of specs for it. Obviously pci express is a must have, as for memory, id say 2 gigs is what you're looking for, 1 gig is pretty much the standard now and mores gonna be needed.

Also dual core cpu's are starting to be pumped out, at the minute though not a lot supports them, games will eventually support them though. Then you have PPU cards which is a physics processing unit, another add in card pc's will start using eventually which takes the physics processing load off the cpu freeing up your cpu time.

wtf PCI-E? i heard it wasnt much faster than AGP right now, and AGP-16x is coming out soon.

Unknown_Sniper 06-02-2005 10:28 PM

fucking shit. Im typing on a paper weight. How much are you expecting ot spend milla?

Agp is dieing out, pci express is the new standard. 8x agp wasn't even used fully till they decided to basically ditch it in favour of pci express. Pci express basically gives more bandwidth for the card to use, lets you use multiple graphics cards simaltaniously (crossfire, sli).

I dont know how much im planning to spend yet, but gervs got me looking at this

Yup, gives you the option of bumping your gfx performance buying another x800 card later on. happy:

yeah when I build my new computer im gonna get that. ed:

Himmler 06-02-2005 11:34 PM

crossfire > sli.

but nvidia is coming out with sli 2 sometime in the future...

lol i remember when i bought my pc everyone said 2gigs of ram is worthless...now its going to be needed soon. thats funn biggrin:

geRV 06-02-2005 11:40 PM

Sli 2 is probably just gonna start bringing in some of the crossfire features like more antialiasing modes or something. If they are then despite nvidia releasing their multi card setup first they'll be playing catchup, in terms of features at least.

Milla 06-02-2005 11:42 PM

Right now im looking at

AMD 64 3500 +

ATI Radeon X800 256 MB

450 Watt Power supply ( ed: )

120 GB hard drive...wester digital of course (on top of the 100 GBs i have now.)

2 Gigs of Corsair Memory

Not sure on the mother board yet.

What else do i need?

geRV 06-02-2005 11:44 PM

Bigger psu id say, like 500 watt minimum.

Christ do they make that? lol

Himmler 06-02-2005 11:45 PM

try to get the xt, or the x850xt

geRV 06-02-2005 11:47 PM

x850 would be a bit noisy i think, 2 of em would at least.

Yeah the 3d mark 2005 score is now held by a crossfire x850 setup. Over 15k i think.

well what about 2 X800's?

Anyway i found a nice 550 W power supply :)

geRV 06-02-2005 11:54 PM

Dual x800xt's would be good stuff. happy:

You could always wait until the G70/R520 are out. G70 is supposed to go into production in the next few weeks.

Crossfire has some major weaknesses (along with SLI). Who knows how much a Master X800XT (or a X850XT for that matter) will be. ATI isn't exactly great about delivering new products. It will probably be $50-$100 more MSRP - but over $200 more due to that fact that ATI can't get them out.

Plus an ATI motherboard is very oOo: They aren't exactly known for good chipsets.

For now I say go A64 with an NF4 SLI motherboard, throw in an X800XL and a gig of RAM and you're good to go. We'll see what's out when you are ready to buy.

I don't see a crossfire x800xt costing much more than a regular version, pci-e x800xt's as far as im aware are easier to come by simply for the fact that not a lot of people have a pci-e motherboard. The card ati had problems delivering was the platinum edition and not really the regular xt versions.

As for the ati motherboard, seeing as this is gonna be their main platform for dual cards theyre gonna have to make it good, i can see them having frequent driver updates for it. As for the memory, 2 gigs is definately needed these days especially for newer games coming out, i usually have just 670mb of free ram when im in windows mode and i try to run with minimum background apps.
