Bicycle

Because I still have half a year to a year left before I can get my permit to drive (yes, I'm 16 but it's a parents thing), I was looking into alternative means of transportation and was considering getting a BMX/Mountian bike.

Anyone here own/ever owned one and could give me some tips on what kind to buy? I don't want the top of the line 1000 dollar bike but I'm going to be using it quite a bit so it has to be pretty good.

ever see the movie Rad?
that was the shit back in the day

I own a Haro Group 1 bike. It's for dirt racing (huge-ass dirt ramps and insane courses) and stuff. It's a great brand. I totally trust them with their quality. My brother got a street bike (heavier frame and thicker tires so you can do those stationary bunny hops and handlebar spins and crazy stuff).

Look into Haro as a brand. You won't be displeased imo.png

A BMX bike is not for transportation, you will want a bike with a few gears on it for that...

I'm also going to use it to get better in shape, so the harder it is to move it the better.

Trust me get one with gears, if you want gear it to a higher setting and work yourself out, than when your done switch it up so its easier.

Those bikes are so big and unwieldy, but i'll take your word for it.

I ride a road/urban bike. I've had all kinds of bikes previously (BMX, Mountain etc) and find this to be the best suited to me. These are very fast but can work yourself if you need to by putting it in a higher gear. Besides I have only had 1 puncture in this bike due to the thinner tyre (whereas when i had my mountain bike they used to be quite frequently). As of the moment I wouldnt go back to a mountain bike unless i was traveling offroad (which i dont at the moment).

this is my bike: Claud butler urban 200

You definately dont want a BMX if you plan to travel over a mile.

That if youre going MTB. Tektro V-brakes and Shimano shifting, what else is there to ask for?

tomxtr 06-21-2005 07:31 PM

It's all about the components. Don't get some piece of shit from Wal-Mart. You'll fucking hate it in two weeks when it doesn't shift worth a damn.

Look for Shimano LX/XT components. XTR is best, but you'll pay for it. You'll save money opting out of a bike with disc brakes. The good ones will cost you and the shitty ones aren't worth it.

Cannondale makes nice bikes. Look into them.

ninty 06-21-2005 07:36 PM

Yeah, don't buy a department store bike. Go to a real bike shop. They'll set you up. They know what their talking about.

I have this:

2005 Trek 4500 - $700CDN.

I looked at Cannondale, Trek, Norco (only in Canada I think), Specialized, Gary Fisher, Kono, and a couple others. Any of those bikes will serve pretty much anything you could ever want them to do.

NICE DUDE .... +1 i hate thieves , had a $900 cannondale stolen from me

Cpt. Obvious 06-21-2005 11:53 PM

I serisously suggest getting a road bike. If you travel a long distance you will really regret getting a bmx/mountain bike. The second you hit a hill you will be struggling. Get a road bike with the very thin tires. Go ask Lance Armstrong he might give you one if your nice.

Specialized bikes have very good quality I recommend it be your first choice.
