I woke up this morning and went and got tickets for Land of the dead then im sitting at home just about ready to leave to go to the movie and my boss calls my cell and says I have to work today they have nobody to work my position I was not scheduled for today and the guy that was working called off for a family emergency

No you dont...you feel obligated...but you do NOT have to go...trust me man, I been in this situation before...and quickly realized...dont LET them get you like that. I know you feel bad and I know it seems wrong..but its not...this is your day OFF...you are NOT paid to be on call for something like this...if they short people...tell the manager to go work that shift...its their job. As far as you going to work today..if you go...thats fine...but demand some overtime pay like time and a 1/2...just something extra...dont do it for nothing....at the VERY least...work today and request another day you were on the sch for...off. Make a deal..dont bend over and take it. rock:

you should go in but be sure to use this to your advantage in the future. Tell the boss about the tickets and see if he will reimberse you. After he does trade them in for another showing. You have a good work ethic, not many people do. Keep it up, one day it will be noticed

While it may help you out in the future...but anyone who works in a place like a restaurant, Movie Theaters, Corner Store, Grocery Store...etc...KNOW that when you work at a place like that...ALL you are is a "workhorse" its stupidity...they take advantage of you BECAUSE they know you will always "come in" when a shift is dropped. I mean, they WILL abuse it. Once or twice is enough...go past 2 times..your screwed. I know its nice, its good work ethic, its very kind and unselfish...but, they WILL turn it on you...has happened to me SOOO much. Just giving fair warning. Do whatever you wish though..just my 2 cents.

I worked in a retirement home's dining room all through High School, and I think you're full of shit. You just have a very cynical attitude and generalized view of those types of work. My occupation now reflects the same type of "working for people when need be", it's called being a good employee which reaps rewards.

Godsmack is filling in for someone who used an emergency day off ( which im sure you have a minimal amount of ), not someone who's taking a vacation day. I'd somewhat agree with you if it were the other way around and not an emergency.

Umm, being a good employee means coming in to work in situations like this, its just what you do for a job like that, I come in on days off all the time. Sure it may be a stupid part time job, but this stuff reflects on your character and you success later on in life.

I have worked in many of those places. I rode my bike to wash dishes in Detroit from the suburbs when I was 16. Did I have to do that, no. I have held a job since I have been 12, only collected unemployment for 6 months in 30 years. A good work ethic can not be taught, you either have it or you dont.

I am not saying..."Be a dick and dont EVER cover for someone thats soo fucking stupid" No dudes...I am saying...if you go fucking cover your ass...I TOO have a SHIT job..its at a GAY ass video store...SO WHAT?! I KNOW what its like to be bent over and raped by the boss. I am the BEST employee they have there...they love me...but its all fake. Lemme put it like this. I have been at work for 2 weeks...was allready offered a promotion...I have been there for over 6 months now...and its still going. At the beginning...I was called upon MORE then one time a day to come in and fill in for people...at first..I didn't want to...it was my first job and I wanted some time off...I quickly realized that its messed up to be that way....or so I thought....by the time the 2nd month had come around..it was almost expected that Anthony would just COME in for anyone that wanted to get off for the day. I am saying that...there is NO harm in doing good for your job...YES please your boss, YES have GREAT work ethic...and YES be the one to fill in and step up. But DO NOT let it turn out like me...they all abused it and I was expected to come in no matter what. When working in a lower class job...such as MINE....they see you ONLY as a worker...someone to fill the time clock in....not as a fucking person. I am sorry..but its the truth...and while I am STILL proud of the work I did... and how MANY times I impressed my boss...at the end of the day...I was still bent over and raped because I filled in for people 1 too many times. Its a simple phrase, but it speaks volumes. Look around one day, look at your list of responsibilities compaired to those around you. See how they meet those, or fail to.

I excel at my job, its simply what i have a knack for. I go far beyond the call of duty almost every shift to achomplish more than my bosses even think possible. I've had them laugh when i tell them what i'll get done, then do. The sad part is, there is only 1 other person who does what i do, he covers my days off. He is the absolute worst at it. He can fuck it up more in 3 days than i can in a whole month, even if i tried. I am of course expected to clean that up on top of my normal work.

Recently however i've had it. I switched my schedule from 4 days back to a normal 5 that im supposed to be working, but had given up to get more done. I've scaled back my work load differing back to people who used to do it, but who became lazy and i somehow ended up taking on there job. Im slowing down and trying to save my self from work.

The whole point is, dont go so far above and beyond that they begin to put you on a pedistal. It simply leads to doing more work for the same pay, with longer hours. Your boss doesnt really care as long as all the work for that day gets done, a few extra things are nice but shouldnt be the norm. Because once there the norm, there no longer "extra", and you get a new set of "extra" on top of it.

As for this situation... Tell them you'll be a few hours late, but can make it in. That way it shows your willing to work with them in the situation, but that it is an inconvience. No need to tell them why its an inconveinance.

Go to work... I'm sure if you had a family emergency he would gladly repay you back since you helped him out..

shit.... i cant and can wait till i get a full time job after high school during college... right now my current one is at the jungle happy: nothing but kids playing in a playground inside... i have to watch them and bring them pizza, good stuff. 10.75/hr
