Do graphics matter in games?

This seems to come up every so often usually between me and pyro so i'll make this poll on it. Do graphics matter?

I say fuck yes they do, the days of playing games where seeing a hexagonal wheel on a car are disappearing. A lot of the innovations in graphics in recent year have alot to do with making things seem more real.

Antialiasing being one example removing the ragged edges of 3d models, whens the last time in real life you noticed a guys face or arm had these jagged lines hanging off that you could cut yourself on?

It's all about immersion, trying to make you forget you're playing a game and trying to draw you into the world inside the game. The more real things look the more chance the game has of pulling that off.

Would you rather have this as an enemy in game:

Or this:

If you said number one please go to your nearest museum, grab a medieval mace and slap yourself around the head with it several times.

Would you rather have this as the world your game is set in:

Or this:

I think the pics speak for themselves, to me graphics make a ton of difference to games in general. Photorealism is the goal and its getting closer all the time, even this screenshot i took in hl2 from a small distance could easily be mistaken for a real life picture.

Bucknub 07-03-2005 08:52 PM

graphics Do matter to me, story not so much really, as long as the game is fun.

07-03-2005 08:52 PM

I'd say it depends on the game. MOHAA is always a favorite, even if the graphics aren't top notch. I'd rather play that than some boring game with uber graphics like MYST. Then again, the more realistic game graphics are, the better; I'd rather enjoy playing HL2 than the eye-scarring Doom II.

Nyck 07-03-2005 08:52 PM

Pictures are sexy but I'm not gonna spend 700 bucks to get that...I want my shit to run smooth.

Tripper 07-03-2005 08:54 PM

For me it's gotta be reasonable on both ends....Gameplay and graphics - They both have to merge to create a nice atmosphere. That's, too me, what makes a game fun - The atmosphere created.

Games filled with bugs fuck me off to no end.

Pyro has fun with pokemon gameboy games, I don't think many people around here on the same page as him.

strvs 07-03-2005 08:56 PM

Graphics matter to me, but gameplay is a major factor too. A game can have beautiful graphics but play like shit, sure id take a look at the graphics for like 10 minutes but id never make an attempt to finish it. So i'd say its a combination of both gameplay and graphics, gameplay being more important.

BlackJackal 07-03-2005 08:57 PM

i dont really care much about graphics. i personaly love ps1 games and play them everyonce and awhile, the bad graphics are actualy cool to look at, and old half-life games too. but that's just me.

geRV 07-03-2005 08:58 PM

Gameplays not a factor in this though, a game can look amazing and be shit or look like shit and play shit. Its basically a thread on games drawing you into the experience by looking more real.

Merlin122 07-03-2005 08:59 PM

in my considered opinion gameplay matters overall. You could do what doom 3 did and have cutting edge graphics but completely miss on the gameplay. As long the game delivers something new for me and doesn't trade off for graphics; the better the game will be.

SoLiDUS 07-03-2005 09:25 PM

Depends on the genre.

FPS: gameplay matters, script doesn't. Give me the best eye candy, motherfucker.
RPG: I know it will have a story, but I need nice graphics too...

Everything else, well... I'll use discretion, but suffice it to say graphics play a very important role in my immersion: if it looks real, behaves realistically and keeps me interested, WORD.

Not the only thing you;re gonna be playing with. spank:

Jimmy Paterson 07-03-2005 10:03 PM

no they dont matter its all about game re-play value for me

Jin-Roh 07-03-2005 10:12 PM

i would have to say that game-play relies on graphics a little. so without graphics, gameplay would be more suck. thus making thus suck. eek:

Merlin122 07-03-2005 10:18 PM
no they dont matter its all about game re-play value for me[/quote:d56e7]

agreed. With games being at the average 50$ games are almost an investment. You need to have it be like morrowing or GTA:SA. Games with unlimited opprotunities usually turn out to be some of my favorites.

Himmler 07-03-2005 10:20 PM

i personally think graphics are the most important part of a game.

mine look just as good, but bigger res biggrin:

geRV 07-03-2005 10:35 PM

Yup, im trying to add more weight to the graphics = important camp, bf2 is a prime example of good gfx coupled with great gameplay. It has some flaws but every game does.

Michael 07-03-2005 10:42 PM

depends on the game i guess. for most games, story and gameplay are first priority, once those are covered and are good, then graphics are up next. obviously a game with good story and gameplay and shitty graphics won't be so enjoyed compared to one with good story and gameplay and awesome next gen graphics. but in general, graphics are probably the 3rd most important thing someone should look for in a game.

1080jibber 07-03-2005 11:02 PM

i need real world graphics rock:
if paint ball wasnt so expensive then i might do that instead of PC games but its too expensive for me so i need the best graphics I can get in video games

Well doom 3 was never meant to be anything more than doom on a new engine with more of a slow approach to it, it acheived that.

Im not supporting pyro here or anything but isn't this all a matter of opinion. If pyro likes a great story on his pokemon advance then that is what he want. There is know point in ranting him about it.

geRV 07-03-2005 11:36 PM

Noones ranting anyone, its just a thread with people expressing their opinion.

Coleman 07-03-2005 11:40 PM

if i had a choice between MOHAA and BF:Vietnam (that's the only bf game I've played) I'd choose mohaa b/c of the style of gameplay. I think it's unfair though to compare different gameplay since you might have the propensity to choose one over the other.

Cpt. Obvious 07-03-2005 11:41 PM

I wasn't really meaning here im just saying across this board it happens alot. People state their opinion on a matter and if someone doesn't agree with it its automatically put down. Such as with music.

Ohhhhhhhh this was the perfect time for this convo to come up.

I was just playing [a href/OLDSCHOOL] System Shock and Fallout 1/2 [end teh oldzchool plzplz] today, and let me say: Really, truly perfect game design is still powerful 100 years after it comes out. How many people, even still, play Pong? At last years Penny-arcade Expo, the end game challenge for like some huge prize was to win a game of Pong.

Challenging, well designed, games with immersive storylines will transcend any age. Hell, parts of World of Warcraft still get compared to Frogger (dont ask, its too complex and nerdy to explain)

However, as with any good movie, the setting will always fuel sooooo much of the story. Likewise, if Fallout had taken place in a lush grassy field, it wouldnt have been any good at all, you wouldnt have felt the harsh, dead atmosphere. So, unfortunately, the better the graphics, the more immersive and amazing the story will remain. Terrible tie-in that one...because you go back and play games and spend nearly the whole time going "Damn, this is so awesome...if only someone redid it so it was ACTUALLY believable"

CoMaToSe 07-04-2005 05:53 AM

While good graphics are nice to have, Its not my first criteria when looking for a game. People put too much importance on graphics now. Developers are more concerned with bullshit like "realistic facial light reflection" and "ploygon refractories" or whatever than they are about making games fun. Gameplay should always be first.

Akuma 07-04-2005 09:38 AM

good gameplay with bad graphics > bad gameplay with good graphics

That said, yes graphics are extremely important to me.

Zoner 07-04-2005 09:42 AM

^ Exactly my view on this.

I want a game to look good, but gameplay will trump graphics every time.

imported_Fluffy_Bunny 07-04-2005 10:21 AM

interesting post, but for some games I actually prefer the old graphics, I prefer the old style Monkey Island to the new one.

I personally think the above is better than this crap they called monkey island 4

Fucking insomnia owns me, 5.06am FUCK mad:

that would explain why it was one of the most pirated games of all time. Who wants to shell out fifty bucks for virtually the same game from 1995?

Stammer 07-04-2005 11:09 AM

Graphics matter just like everything else, I wont spend money on a game that looks like garbage even if it has the best gameplay becuase I want my moneys worth on everything. That being said if the game looks amazing, but it plays like nonsense I wont buy it either. It's a delcate balancing act of not going overboard on graphics but have no gameplay or have gameplay but no graphics. Games like Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2 pull off this balance with an amazing combination of the two.

jujumantb 07-04-2005 11:53 AM

Gameplay 100%

Graphics will only factor when they add to gameplay, which they usually do to some point, but by no means will I buy a game because of great graphics.

Jimmy Paterson 07-04-2005 12:39 PM

I need a new video card, moy pos 32 mb mx420 sucks

Pyro 07-04-2005 02:04 PM

Most important aspect? Not even fucking close...

Like shit when the games came out a decade ago we didn't not play them because of the graphics...the fact it looked like that didn't mean the game didn't kick fucking ass...and trust me back then fun in games were a lot more apparent than they are now.

Gameplay and Story as for the funf actor should be taken into consideration for the quality of the game way more than graphics.

Duke_of_Ray 07-04-2005 02:14 PM

Story is way more important than graphics to me! My favorite game of all time though is Tecmo Super Bowl. By far the best football game I have ever played.

Proteus 07-04-2005 02:15 PM

I think graphics depend on peoples ideals in a game. If they couldn't care less about realism then a game like Serious Sam will entertain them for days. If they do care then they'd drop that piece of shit in two seconds. People like Gonzo rag on me for taking graphics as more important than other things like how big a world is and how much shit you can do. I'm an FPS guy, so there's only one thing you do, you kill shit. In the future I want to be killing lifelike demons and killing near-real people (It helps me to vent...). If you like big huge worlds and shit like that like SWG and WoW, then you probably don't care about graphics. w/e, all opinion.
