Allmost all these children end up having some form of serious mental illness when they become older.

Serious (but mostly treatable) mental illness has been found to be quite common among the very high IQ ( > 3 s.d.). Also, you'll notice that many generally anxious people are considered intelligent and introspective so there may be something to it.

In my opinion, geniuses are just gifted overachievers with obsessive-compulsive tendencies: they don't know when to stop ;-)
