Fined

I went to work on friday night, I work in a convenience store/ off licence. This lad came in to buy alcohol and as he looked 18, so I served him. 2 minutes later some police came in saying that I failed a test purchase and that I served someone under the age of 18. I was given the choice to attend a court appearance or get an "on the spot fine" of £80 (140.39). FUCKING TWATS! I just work to try and earn some money to get a car and then change job around christmas, yet I have to watch who I serve due to cunt police trying to catch me out and fine me the fuckers.

Yet when i ring the police about a real criminal offence happening/happened the police take hours to get here if not days. I mean wtf? I rang up last week to say there is a fight outside the shop, the woman replyed all units are currently unavailabe. Yet they are wasting all their resources on catching innocent people out (speed cameras, test purchases etc)

My dept manager said he found on a forum a woman in the same position as me chose the court appearance and got herself a £600 fine and a criminal record for it.

As a defence our shop as a 'refusals log' (where we write down each sale we refuse) incase this happened, they practically ignored it.

The weird thing was that when the lad was leaving I had a feeling something wasnt right, I dunno i cant really describe it, like a subconsious feeling i was being watched. I glanced out of the shop window and saw the lad walk through the car park towards a car at the back of the car park. The police wernt in police uniform but I knew instantly that it was them.

Wow... that sucks man. When in doubt, ask for ID though...

Coleman 07-18-2005 01:40 AM

ouch

dr nein 07-18-2005 02:05 AM

Sounds like the LAPD. They are busy busting guys trying to hire prostitutes and then talk about how they don't have the manpower to do such and such.

Jin-Roh 07-18-2005 02:11 AM

Store policy should be to card them, even if they look 50+. biggrin:

You enjoy being a prick though... nothing special really when it comes natural... rolleyes:

Poseidon 07-18-2005 07:18 AM

I usually do ask for ID. He really did look 18 though. Anyway, i went to work today and had to fill out a statement saying exactly what happened. I told her what the police said my choices were:
Attend a court appearance (and probably get a hefty fine and a criminal record)
or an "on the spot fine" of £80

My manager went ape at what they said at the first option. She said they shouldnt have said that and only said that to pressurise me to get the on the spot fine. Shes writing a harsh letter to the licencing dept now. Aparently I shouldnt have accepted the on the spot fine, and let my companies soliciters sort it out. GG company for letting me know this cuss:

Sgt>Stackem 07-18-2005 07:20 AM

I see its the cops fault your sold to minors, do your job and this wont happen. Card anyone under 40

Johnj 07-18-2005 07:40 AM

What Stackem says and if a copper comes in refuse to serve him at all. Tell him you think his ID is fake.

CoMaToSe 07-18-2005 07:43 AM

It aint that hard to ask for ID, man. quit whining cause ur lazy

Blase 07-18-2005 08:47 AM

Yea, You can bitch and moan about how cops are singling you out for selling beer to a minor and not catching the real criminals, but if you actually carded people for their ID instead of just guessing they're 18 the cops wouldn't have to do this no matter how worthless you feel it is.

Have you ever worked in a place where you have to ID people? No?
Thats odd, I have. Actually, I do right now. Mine is a bit different from Poseidons, since mine is a military airforce base, but still, after a while you learn to determine stuff by just looking at peoples faces. Its not guessing, its a fucking 6th sense.

Rational it all you want, I'm sure if you ever slipped up you'd say, "BUT I HAVE A SIXTH SENSE! THERES NO WAY THAT GUY WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!" and I'm sure everyone would be like, "Oh, well he has a sixth sense how could he possibly be wrong!"

And where was this "Sixth Sense" for poseidon? It worked so well he sold alcohol to a minor!

Very true. Maybe not so much a 6th sense but you generally know if someone is over 18 or not. Yeah I can "slip up" - this is one of them times, I do ask for ID alot for both cigs, scratchcards, alcohol etc. Our refusal sales book is full of my signature. I never guess if someone is 18, if I am 100% that someone is of legal age i'll sell the product to them, otherwise I ask for ID, this once I made an a mistake.

[quote="Sgt>Stackem":39a24]I see its the cops fault your sold to minors, do your job and this wont happen. Card anyone under 40[/quote:39a24]

quote me on where I blamed the police for me selling to minors? I know I was wrong, but I wasnt saying it was anyone elses fault. I'm just saying I don't deserve a £80 fine, for doing my fucking job. Have you ever worked in an off licence? Once you do you will find out how hard it is to determine (at times) how old someone is. I've ID'd a 26 year old before, even though she looked 18 I asked anyway cause I couldnt be sure. Just because once I made a slipup doesnt necessarily mean I deserve a £80 fine.

hahahahahahahahahahaha

Mr.Buttocks 07-18-2005 09:47 AM

The next time a policeman come into the shop to buy something, tell him to fuck himself up the ass with his truncheon. Then stand on the counter and urinate on him.

you were wrong, you broke the law, you get fined. Its not the cops fault you get fined. You were just being lazy, thats all. Its not the end of the world, it just sucks to be you right now. pay up and hope you dont get a record over something as trivial as this

Proteus 07-18-2005 01:15 PM

Who cares. So he sold alcohol to a minor. What the fuck isn't there bigger problems to deal with? I'm not saying the cops were being douches it's what they should have done but right now why are people bitching about it?

Stammer 07-18-2005 01:19 PM

It goes both ways, Posideon should always check ID, and the Police should be off doing more productive things than setting up stings on clerks.

Pyro 07-18-2005 01:38 PM

It's your fault for selling to kids...start fucking doing your job.

Sgt>Stackem 07-18-2005 01:44 PM

I dont think they do this to get the people selling, they do it to get the people seeling to stop selling to minors. What if that kid got in an accident? You could have been on the wrong end of a lawsuit, its to protect you more than them. By doing this they 9the police) are making thier job easier. The tougher they are on people selling to minors the less minors will get booze/beer and be the drunk thats out around midnight screwing crap up, so less police calls.

Remeber to CYA.......always CYA

Tripper 07-18-2005 04:00 PM

Give the guy a break, let him have a bitch about it. Life sucks, and you can't be on point for it 24/7, it's natural to make mistakes and slip-up....He never blamed the cops....So don't feel the need to give him shit about it.

Jin-Roh 07-18-2005 11:38 PM

saw one of these types of situations today at AMPM..

two guys, one claims he is 26 and has no ID, so is denied. then he gets his friend to show is ID, that shows he is over 21. still denied because the "26 yr old" ordered the purchase first. then the 26 guy is at the door ready to leave and tells his buddy, "c'mon just forget it, this is stupid".

girl at cash reg. says, "Sorry, I don't want to be fined $3,000. I am not that rich."
Then the 26 guy says, "... and you never will be." ed: ed:

what an ass! eek:

Thats where your wrong, I can get fined for selling an age restricted product to someone who is buying it for someone underage (if i know about it or they can prove I knew something about it). I have to look out for that too, many times police come into our shop and the one next door saying the kids have alcohol outside, how have they got it. I'm not a fucking mindreader, am I supposed to refuse everyone just incase they send their mates in for alcohol? Only last week someone came in one over age and one 16, I'm like no way, im not selling shit to you, I've just heard your whole conversation about what you want to buy the younger lad. At least talk about it outside the shop. If I see someone buying for a minor its a barring offence in my shop.
