Vikings never wore horned helmets. A viking helmet looked something like this:

vikings had their regions, different regions (of scandanavia) had different styles. Also different regions worships a different god, which also led to different styles. The ones with horns were common of odin and Thor, but horns also showed rank and bravery, as did eagle feathers for native americans

Actually, no. According to research (and I live in the fucking area vikings roamed and called their home, so the stuff I read is more legit than the stuff youll find in ie. the US), the vikings did never use horned helmets. To clumsy in combat, you see. However, there are specculations on wether or not the vikings used horned helmets for rituals and ceremonys, but no evidence of that has been found (and in my opinion there is no evidence, since it didnt happen). The hornhelmed vikings began to appear in the 19th century, thanks to era of romance. They wanted to make vikings look scary and fierce, so they slapped horns on their helmets. From there, it travelled to the whole world as a massive misinterpretation(sp?) of the vikings. The common gear was chainmail, sword or axe, a small buckler and a "Spangenhelm", if the stuff Ive read is correct.

so what, you live there. Does that mean any info is not valid if you dont live there? Should I tell Pyro that any info he presents about President Bush or the war is invalid because he doesnt live here? Get a clue, buy a vowel or something

What I meant was, Ive been to excavations, gravesites, seminares and the likes, with people that does have a clue about whats going on. Then again, everything Pyro says is invalid, so there you go.

how could I argue with logic like that?

anti 08-02-2005 12:18 PM

jeeeeeeeesus stackem, youre pretty fiesty when it comes to vikings and their helmets eh? you do provide a good arguement, if a shitty arms website says vikings wore horned helmets then it must be true!!!!!!10101010binarybinaryktogfuckedadude

(there were many other websites but i thought this would be enough to prove that innoxx and tystnad were right)

Innoxx 08-02-2005 12:48 PM

A Japanese samurai is more likely to march into battle with a horned helmet.

well I just did a quick google search but in reading your links I found this:

"Archaeological finds, all but one of which date from the ninth century B.C. to about the seventh century C.E., back them up on the horn thing, but only to a degree. The ancients implied that such helmets were used in battle, but a ceremonial use is more likely. The finds consist mostly of images from rock carvings, horn carvings, coins, engraved metal objects, etc. A few actual horned helmets have been found; most are Germanic helmets from Denmark, but one is a Celtic model dredged from the Thames. None of these ceremonial horned helmets match the stereotypical image of a metal helmet with ox horns attached. For example, two Bronze Age horned helmets unearthed at Viksø, Denmark sport long twisting horns made of metal."

I would admit that it wouldnt be good in battle but it would be good in intimidation of others. It does make sence that it would be used in ceremonial uses

I think it is a waste of money, but you buy what ya like.

Merlin122 08-02-2005 01:39 PM
