Probably ship it with that stock cooler in the pic, some other site got one of the cards and the nvidia artic cooler lines up with the mounting holes on it, didn;t come with a heatsink or fan for some reason. eek:

So what is this thing supposed to do? Is it another giant leap forward that should satisfy my every need as a human. Or is it just another "next gen" card that doesnt really have all that much boost over the last gens x800xt xl superduper Xtreeeeeeem edition monster cool PT li card.

Nobody knows what it'll bring, sm 3.0 is one of them, increased performance, crossfire compatability, besides that it could have a number of new things.

welcome back gervis.

nice card, although i wont buy it.

Miscguy 09-08-2005 08:22 PM

Meh, not like if i even read reviews for it and saw compairison i would begin to understand the power it has. My baseline is so asscue that i simply cant look at stats anymore and be like "hmm indeed this is impressive". Now days its the assumption that whatever more extreme initial, after a number combo, is the greatest card ever made. They may actually start making up letters to help define there products. Right now you could show me stats compairing a x800 pro, xt, xl, 850 etc; vs a 6800, gt, etc and a 7800gtx and all i could say is... Yes, those numbers are big. Then if i were in the market i would buy the best comprimise of big numbers. What ever happened to the good old days when a company didnt modify there product then re-release it under the same name with a few letters behind it... No the product revisions were worth an entirly new number, or name. My god, how simple that could be.

x800
x850 (pro)
x900 (xt)
x950 (xl)
X1000 (the new r520 thingy)

Screw the letters. Why do we need 8 versions of what amounts to the same card? Oh you added 2.345302 pixel shader support to the X800 L9HF3 while the x800 HLTRN only has 1.3535674, i see now. Fuck that, revise the card and improve it enough to warrent a new number. This XT, Xl buisness is for the birds. I no longer know what im ranting about, it seems to be just pure hate and spite at this point.

geRV 09-08-2005 08:25 PM

The r520 is a totally new design, the radeon 9700 and upto the x850xt-pe all used modified\overhauled versions of the same core with more pipelines. This is ati's first totally new design in quite a few years.

The companies should really try and stick to a proper naming convention, 1 card for basic users, one for mainstream and one for highend, far too many other cards which gets confusing with the naming schemes.

I think its based off selling the product... essentially it is the same product but but more overclocked (or improved slightly structurely). They will sell the normal card to people on a budget, whilst they still get a decent enough card to play the upto date games. They make the XT, XL, Pro etc for people willing to spend more money to squeeze the most out of their card. Each one differs in performance and therefor differs in price. So there is a high range card to suit a range of budgets/gamers.

Im not saying dont release updated, or upgraded cards that are close to the old version... sure open up those 2 pipelines and at 10hz to the ram, but instead of claling it the x800 SLPTRQ call it the x850, or x825 or some shit. We dont need the initials, it just makes it harder to diseminate what the fuck card has what feature as compaired to those that dont.

That statement is false, if we stop buying than they will come up with a way that the new games you buy will ONLY work with the new cards because you need a code or some bull shit to run the game. Or something else similar to a royal rape.

Then stop supporting those developers/games. They will quickly patch their games or lose stock and die: you have the power to end this. </stewie>

And what if the effects they use are unique to a certain tech and can't be patched back? The new cards are just progress, and without that we'd still be playing atari 2600's.

SoLiDUS 09-09-2005 12:15 PM

Proprietary/unique effects or not, the hardware sells for buttloads and costs little more than a few loafs of bread to make. Packaging, distribution and other related costs are low, so explain the incredibly high prices ? Stop buying their shit at 600$ and the cost will lower. Repeat until the prices reflect actual hardware quality and you're good to go. New technological requirements are nothing more than collaboration from the developers to help push hardware sales: stop buying the shit and the latter will take notice and add "compatibility" to their code. The room smells like feces but you're all wearing noseplugs.

KTOG 09-09-2005 12:30 PM

Supply is inversely proportional to demand.

And how much do you think the chips cost in terms of research and development? If a graphics core has to go through revisions each respin of the chip costs several million $ to do. This argument comes out everytime new graphics cards are available complaining about the price, buy it if you want to and can afford it, if you can't then opt for the mainstream version of the product which obviously won't cost as much as the high end counterpart. Its not as if nvidia and ati are forcing us to buy just the high end version of the card and nothing else, there are always cheaper alternatives.

SoLiDUS 09-09-2005 01:57 PM

They can recoup their development costs, employee wages and marketing campaigns very easily even selling these cards at HALF the current prices. You're just blinded by the shiny metal on the cards. biggrin:

Wrong, go check out how much ram costs for these cards, the high end ati card will come with 512mb of ram, thers still 6800 ultra with 512mb going for $700+

SoLiDUS 09-09-2005 02:09 PM

Same problem. Artificially inflated prices on components you intend on combining together inevitably will lead to a new item of inflated value. When I come home from work, I'll try and find the report that quite clearly shows this...

6800U 512MB used to be $1000.

Even when the 7800GTXs were out for $500.
