satellite radio
anyone have satellite radio? Are they any good?
I think I might pick one up next weekend, Im going to pickup Sirius with an American account so I can listen to Howard Stern. I hope the in car instillation is easy. |
it cost alot just to tune 1 show. Howard Sperm is OK to listen to but he isnt worth a monthly fee
|
i disagree, sirius is incredible and not too expensive at all, in return you get great sound quality and amazing uncencored, commercial free variety of tons and tons of music...there is always something on somewhere as long as you are open to different kinds of music
its good for people who are in the car or the office a lot (if they have the adapter thing) but i recommend sirius highly, its what the radio should be like |

Blasphemy! Sirius and Stern rule! |
you should consider looking into a head unit and not one of those fuking add-on type things ... from my experience the head units are much more clear. the add-on bullshit is staticy as all shit ... so much so its not even worth listening to. i had one in my car and gave it away...

I have a Sirius radio and it's the best thing I've ever bought. I love it. The one that I have is a unit that you can take out of the car and plug into a boom box. I listen to it in the car and then bring it in at night and use it as my alarm to wake up to in the morning. I also bought another unit for my daughter that is in college. Her's is hard wired into her Jeep. She really only listens to it when she's going back and forth to school.
As for sound quality, mine is crystal clear most of the time. However, I'm using a unit that broadcasts on a radio frequency to the car radio. I only have four frequencies to choose from. The only city that this has been a problem in is the city where my daughter goes to school. There is an existing station on all four channels! That's why I chose to get her the hard wired unit. She gets perfect reception. In Atlanta I get perfect reception on mine, and I love the "take it with you" aspect of it. I listen to alot of college football on it (that's one of the reasons I chose Sirius - Alabama games are not on any of the local radio stations) and I listen to the games on my deck with the boom box and a beer. I've also listened to live Jimmy Buffett concerts (the Radio Margaritaville channel) while sitting on my deck with my wife. There's nothing like listening to Buffett with a cold one and enjoying a great summer night ... and I usually have a cold beer too. |
I use Siruis Satelite Radio. cheaper than XM. We get great coverage even in wooded, mountanous, and most parking garages.
|
Im never in my car or listening to the radio enough to "pay" for a radio service.
But I believe Col. travels alot in his car so it would be perfect for someone like that. I listen to maybe 35 minutes of radio a day. |

I find they loop songs to much.. A mainstream hip hop station played piggy bank by 50 cent 7 times in a 8 hours span once.. Fucking pathetic. I just keep to my mp3 player to be truthful *I would find it worth it if i ever listhened to sports or Stern ect..

Im looking at getting this [url:ad972]http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10068746&catid=2363 9&logon=&langid=EN[/url:ad972]
I dont care for sound quality too much, as long as I can hear a program im cool. I do about 1 1/2 hours of driving a day and I love listening to talk radio and comedy, I use to allways just load stand up comedy and talk radio show on my Ipod and listen to it while im driving. I think this will be better for me because I guess I dont really need to upload and download stuff for my Ipod. How are they hooked up to your car? like the unit im looking to get. |

The reason that mine is not hard wired to my radio (which causes my problems in that one city - keep in mind that I drive all over NC, SC, AL, GA, North FL, TN and MS and I only have a problem in one city) is that I thought I would take it out of my car and put it in my wife's for trips and stuff. But I don't ... so I probably oughta get it installed right ... except for the other reason I didn't do it, which is because I'm a cheap SOB and I figured why pay somebody when I can just plug it into my cigarette lighter and go. |
i dont listen to the radio often enough for me to get one, but satellite radio looks kinda cool. i dunno, depends on how different it is from regular FM or AM radio. what are the pros to getting it?

^^ what he said. Plus, good comedy channels, good talk channels (again, they have talk for everybody, left, right, center - I like the NRA shows)
Channels I listen to on a regular basis: Elvis Radio (all Elvis all the time - if Elvis didn't sing it, they don't play it) Rolling Stones Channel (Same as above but all Stones) Classic Rock Classic Vinyl 60's Channel 70's Channel 80's Channel Some channel that I can't remember the name of that plays new rock Some channel - I think it is called Garage or something - that plays cool bands that I never heard of (y'all probably have) - kinda underground garage band stuff BBC Channel - for BBC news Some channel that plays new British bands - kinda weird stuff but I like to check it out every now and then RadioMargaritaville - Buffett music mixed with bands that he likes - some Marley, Beach Boys, Eagles, etc - a strange but cool mix of music Classic Radio - old 30's and 40's radio shows like Gunsmoke, The Shadow, Green Hornet, Have Gun Will Travel - great for killing time and keeping me awake on long drives Outlaw Country channel Bluegrass Channel Those are the main ones, but I have 30 presets. you can also mark a song that you like and it will pop up an alert if it is playing on any channel on the satellite and ask if you want to switch to it. Pretty cool feature. |
if they had College gameday on Saturday mornings it might sway me but to go out and get it for Howard alone is nuts

They've got it. ESPN Radio, ESPN News, ESPN Spanish version .... and several more. And on Saturday's you can listen to Gameday. |

Yeah, it's pretty cool. My brother has a Sanyo (Sirius) portable reciever. It can be used almost anywhere, as long as you can get a clear view of the sky with the antenna. And it can broadcast over FM so any radio in a reasonable distance can share it. My favorite channel is Octane 20. All modern rock all the time and no commercials. And Raw Dog comedy is pretty cool too. Totally uncensored stand up comedy. We listen to it at work and it makes time go by much faster. It's worth the cost.

I have Galaxie sattelite radio, i think its run by CBC... They have some really good classical stations, from baroque to chamber music. Their rock and jazz stations are good too.
|
Video killed the radioooooo star, video killed the radio star.

Radio is a complete joke.
Its good that you're trying to find proper radio stations that play more varied and unheard of music rather than listening to evil greedy commercial radio stations that have more adverts than music. I'm waiting until all in-car and in-house radio players can recieve internet/digital stations so we have all the choice in the world. Then all of the lazy and greedy stations will go out of business. Nice one! [no i'm not being sarcastic, I'm impressed that people are kind of making a stand against the corporate radio nonsense that most people can't escape] |

CBC Radio 2 is great, during the day they play everything from classical to jazz to hip hop. And at night they play some of the wierdest shit you can imagine. All commercial free. |
Ottawa's radio stations are complete garbage, as I'm sure they are in most medium-large cities.
The NEW Hot 89.9 (top 40, dance, hip hop): Now playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" 106.9 The BEAR (New rock): Now playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" CHEZ 106 (Classic Rock): Now playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" 93.9 BOB FM (80s, 90s, whatever): Now playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" KISS FM 103.5 (Soft rock, top 40): Now playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" rolleyes: |

The radio stations here arent bad at all. Sure we got the regular shit most cities do but we have an excellent classic rock station (Q107, plays all kinds of classic rock, not just zeppelin and floyd) and an awesome college station that plays anything you could ever imagine.
You can listen to a stream of CJSW on their site.. pretty high quality too .. http://www.cjsw.com/ |
There will never be a GF1 Radio where all you hear are bands no one has heard of. Radio is a business.
I usually only listen to AM sports talk(WDFN 4TW) or the host of the morning show on w4 or something. |

i dont think you can get it here in alaska, the xm or sirius satellites are too low, the damn trees probably mess up the signal
|
