No one cares that the government can wiretap for 45 days...without warrants?

Coleman 03-08-2006 03:35 PM

since no one replied in 2 hours of posting it, I guess it is very safe to say no one cares one bit

Machette 03-08-2006 03:42 PM

Well lets wait for the 45 day free wire tapping day pass and see what happens. Things however don't look to good..look at what senator rockefeller said in that article.

c312 03-08-2006 06:28 PM

but doesn't the article also say the process will be more official and therefore, more secure?

Machette 03-08-2006 07:07 PM

Well lets wait and see.

c312 03-08-2006 07:55 PM

well it says they have to report to a bipartisan committee, I think this is a step towards making this practice more resistant to corruption.

[quote:82ea9]The proposed bill would allow the president to authorize wiretapping without seeking a warrant for up to 45 days if the communication under surveillance involved someone suspected of being a member of or a collaborator with a specified list of terrorist groups and if at least one party to the conversation was outside the United States.[/quote:82ea9]

What's wrong with that?

Machette 03-08-2006 08:39 PM

Trying to find the whistleblowers testimony before congress saying the NSA program reached into the "millions" and it was "very widespread"... damn blog it was on dumped the link though

Madmartagen 03-08-2006 08:44 PM

wtf is so hard about getting a warrant before wiretapping? how retarded can the govt be to have to bypass this process if they want to listen in on someone who is breaking the law?

Machette 03-08-2006 09:00 PM

It takes time to get approval for wiretaps... it even has to be sealed by the approval of the attorney general - he listed the process in january at georgetown university (there to justify the use of wiretapping), the way he pitched the process sounded almost like it was a pain in the ass for him..thus wiretapping without warrant would be easier...

Madmartagen 03-08-2006 09:06 PM

isnt it harder to get the presidents authorization then the office of the attorney general? They should make it easier to get a warrant - maybe share the delegation of authority with a judge, or allowing approval via email, fax etc. bypassing the warrant and probable cause process is bullshit, and just shows how lazy and lax the authorities are.

Machette 03-08-2006 09:12 PM

Well to get a large amount of wiretaps probably needs a higher authority of approval...or NSA is just doing its own thing.
