The price of oil is basically set by OPEC. The cut production and the price rises. Which is what they just did a few days ago.

I see it plausible that there is more than enough oil to go around, and OPEC cuts production citing violence etc. to gain profits as was the case when Katrina hit.

Madmartagen 04-17-2006 02:48 PM

i think OPEC should be ablet to charge whatever they want for their oil if others are willing to pay for it. Its our fault for being dependent on their resources to begin with...

Like finding ways to reduce your own personal dependency on oil based energy.

You all sound like crack addicts b!tching that the local crack house has raised rock prices.

Either pay up or reduce/eliminate your addiction.

The idea of "windfall profits tax" to "alleviate" the problem stinks of manipualtive and greedy government.

If you think prices are high now, consider the fact that it's still cheaper than Coca-Cola or bottled water.

Which can YOU live without?

And which will you have no choice but to purchase unless you consider making lifestyle changes?[/quote:28f2c]

I've been cutting back on my driving as well..Like this man said if you are concerned about the price of gas either do something about it or cut back.

I have even been to the Smart dealer to check out what they have. Right now I drive a 1999 Dodge Dakota V6 pick-up truck.
You cannot compare gas to Coca-Cola or bottle water, that just fucking stupid!!! We fucking need gas, we dont need Coca-fucking-Cola!!!!!!

edit: do you spend $50 to $100 a week on Coca-fucking-cola
people have to drive to work, they have to heat there houses
by your thinking and that guys thinking, we have to give up every luxury we have just to pay our bills. We might as well be robots wake up goto work, go home goto bed.
this is insane, i cant even understand why government hasnt steped in yet?

Ok, im a little pissed about the whole gas thing, I dont make alot of money, and for someone trying to save money like myself, its hard when you see the gas prices so high, I still live at home and its hard to save money and I still live at home!

Machette 04-17-2006 04:29 PM

Why on earth do you drive a truck? Thats your problem right there.

Also you wondered why the government hasn't stepped in. Firstly capitalism, if you did not know is based on a "hands off policy" therefore governments shouldn't interfere with the economy for fear of tarnishing it. Although the U.S sentae had hearings in December and brought forth all the leading CEO's of Oil companies (Exxon, Bp..etc) and the hearings where useless to say the least because the CEO's said they don't control the prices and denied that their profits really mattered and the Exxon CEO said something like "We are all in this together" A ironic statement for a man who has made $150,000 a day while being CEO of Exxon..gg capitalism.

because it was $100 cheaper a month on insurance. soon i will sell my truck, i am looking around.

Madmartagen 04-17-2006 04:32 PM

gas is a necessity, so you are going to pay for it wether you think you can afford to or not. if you cant afford to pay for gas (which is hard for me to imagine) then you can always walk, ride a bike, take the bus, carpool etc. im not criticizing you - i know it sucks, but thats what it is. gas, like water, is a necessity and so you going to have to pay whatever the holder wants - its their resource and you need it. getting mad at OPEC imo, is a little childish and is unfair. you can criticize govt taxes on gas and how we as a country are not making better advances in alternative energy sources, but i dont think its fair to blame OPEC for the costs of gas...

Machette 04-17-2006 04:37 PM

OPEC is in some way using these events to their advantage. America gets most of its oil from Canada and Venezula not from Nigeria and Iran.

our economy is going to take a shit dive because of this. just look at my case, all the shit i could buy, i will no longer purchase. alot of people will follow suit. that is why i cant understand why the government doesnt do anything about this. sure it hasnt happen yet but it will, and why wait for that when it can be solved allready?

Machette 04-17-2006 04:42 PM

Jibber every American and Canadian likes driving their cars...And I highly doubt people will buy less goods because of this. Gas is a highly necessary part of the economy and everybody indugles in it.

And look at what I said a few posts up about government intervention. Capitalism doesn't allow it.

Madmartagen 04-17-2006 04:45 PM

cause it isnt their fault - its their right to set gas prices at that level because it is their product to sell. they arent selling oil because we need it, they sell it to make a profit. you really cant do anything about that except to choose not to buy it; its your only option as a consumer. the fact that you are dependent on this resource makes no difference - they are in the business to make money, not help you get to work.

ninty 04-17-2006 04:47 PM

Opec members:

Venezuela, Nigeria, Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirites

These countries basically collectivley control oil prices.

OPEC has a monopoly over oil supply.

There will never be too much oil being produced at one time. This would cause prices to drop and reduce profits. It goes for anything. Why would you put out 1,000,000 widgits at once when you can put out 5,000 and raiise their prices.

im just a little hot headed right now, dont mind me. im just getting a career going, i dont make that much money right now, i trying to save money. In a year or two, I dont think i will even care what gas prices are like.
life sucks biggrin:
