Who cares. Woohoo, no more pop-ups while I search for porn!

The best way I know to stop popups (in XP & win2000) is to add comments to your C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSetchosts file.
just copy & paste below: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by #Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP #addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual #line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by #the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be #separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may #be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name #denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.2 sbad.foxsports.lycos.com 127.0.0.2 www.celebritywonder.com 127.0.0.2 doubleclick.com 127.0.0.2 ads.x10.com 127.0.0.2 yimg.com 127.0.0.2 us.a1.yimg.com 127.0.0.2 www.timeinc.net 127.0.0.2 www.imglmb1.com 127.0.0.2 ad.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.2 www.zdmcirc.com 127.0.0.2 ar.atwola.com 127.0.0.2 http://servedby.advertising.com/ 127.0.0.2 http://www3.bannerspace.com #end I know there is a way for this to be done in win98 too I just can't remember right now. I use it, it works! If you start getting popups from a new source just right click on the offending popup and copy the address and add it to the hosts file after the 127.0.0.2 part. |

Not that I like pop-ups or anything. I actually despise them, but I can tolerate them on a website wich I think is worthwhile.
Like this one. I actually clicked on them a few times on numerous visits. Just because I know that it may help out the operators of this and other worthwhile sites. |

You usally only find this amount of pop-ups on porn sites and such. I woulden't have expected a MOHAA game site to get so many! If server bandwith charges are getting too expensive, maybe the AA.com webmaster can setup a donation thingy? I'm sure members of the community would be willing to help pay those bandwith cost. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/wink.gif |
yeah i'd donate. i dont got very much $$$ but better than being a cheap bastard who just hangs around and takes advantage of a free service

I absolutely despise popups. I will never click on one other than to close it. Hear that webmasters? N E V E R!!! There are NO good popups IMO. It is (also IMO) an underhanded, dirty, sleazy way of trying to force me to click on something 99% of which I DO NOT WANT! It's the bastard child of banners. And it's totally fking up the web. If your website has to go away because that is the only way you can figure out to support it, then so be it I'll find somewhere else to go.
I can handle banners. You stick 1,2 or 3 popups in my face, I will kill it. You Lose!! Sh¡t, I killed 3 just coming to these forums!!! Hah!!! Sorry man, I saw a chance to vent in this thread.. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/wink.gif As far as killing them, I also went to d/l.com one day in utter frustration. I ended up d/l a bunch of popup killer progz, including the Popup Killer you mentioned GrapeApe. Not sure why, but I ended up installing one called POW! made by AnalogX. Just curious Grape, in your experience with Popup Killer does it already kill alot of popups on installation or do you have to "train" it? As in add the popups as you go. That's my only gripe about Pow! is that you pretty much have to train it as you go. Click on the systray icon, clicking add/delete popups, then double-clicking the offending popup name & hit ok & it closes it immediately & every time you encounter that one again. But, the upside is, that if your surfing habits are somewhat repetitive (you go to alot of the same sites) once you add the stuff it kills them dead on sight. Dorrie, win9x also has a hosts file in the Windows directory. It can be edited with notepad easily. It's originally called hosts.sam & basically after you edit it adding the offending sites, you save as "hosts" with NO extension. After you save it look in the Windows dir with explorer to make sure it didn't save with a .txt extension. If it did rename it to "hosts" or it won't work. I had found a website in the past that had hosts files already made up that you could d/l & stick in your windows dir but I don't remember where it is. My only problem with it was alot of the banners would be red x's and so it made the web pages look like sh¡t. Anyway, my 2¢... =) ------------------ http://home.austin.rr.com/ottf/c0aX_red_tiltr_s.gif #~ridin'_the_wire~0 [This message has been edited by coax (edited February 20, 2002).] |
Dorie Miller, how do you find the address to add to the hosts file (WinXP)? Many times the popup window is totally made of a picture, no address bar, how to find the address?
|
The best free one out there can be got at www.panicware.com Easy to use, uses little memory and can load and unload easily.
No..I don't work for them;-) I wouldn't mind a kickback though. ------------------ http://members.shaw.ca/t.rowe/sgtwolf.jpg |

i have pop-up stopper pro. link somewhere in the OT section. you can turn it on and off easily and it stops all popup ads.

|
i have NEVER seen a pop up nightmare like this site though...outragous...any click get's me 2 or 3 pop ups
|
do not do the host file thing...
not sure if it was the cause but if not it was a hell of a coincidence... within 30 min's i had over 5500 virus files (nimda) on my machine after trying the host file thing...and there was one in the directory where the hosts file was... |

This is a great little program by AnalogX called "POW" for getting rid of those pesky pop-up ads. Check it out at:

Okay, serveal things:

I hate pop-ups. I used to leave any site that features any pop-up, unless it's REALLY worth my while, some of you feel that way for this website, and I'm grateful to hear that.
This is actually against my belief, but I am running out of options. Yesterday in the afternoon something terrifying happened, yep that's right this new server couldn't handle the traffic at one point (that's why filedb was down). I have no idea what I am going to do now, let's just hope it "choked" and it's an isolated incidient.
I am still trying to figure out how to stop pop-ups on the forums (they will have to stay on mainsite unfortunately) DoubleClick support team is no help on that.
When a new "po-up" campaign starts, you'll see one to two of them on consecutive loads, but after the first few they'd be gone, at least until new campaign arrives.
I'm NOT against pop-up stoppers...
Don't blame ALL pop-ups on me, sometimes a pop-up pop new windows, I ban them on sight, but they still sneak in once in a while (like I can't look at EVERY campaign before approving them, there are about 500 new ones everyday). Finally, if you REALLY can't stand pop-ups, then alliedassault.net, planetmedalofhonor.com (some g-spy pop-ups actually), and mohmatch.com would welcome you guys with open arms, try them http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif [This message has been edited by BadScript (edited February 23, 2002).] |
Yeah seems the porn pages have allot of pop ups. Why? they get enough money with the reged users
