Johnny Got His Gun

Has anyone ever read Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun? I just finished, and it is hands down one of the best books I have ever read. The storyline is amazing, and has an amazing way of making the reader feel claustrophobic and helpless. Its about a man who went through war...I cant tell you about him or I'd ruin the read. Its extremely anti-war, so if you are against war, read it.

The last paragraph is so amazing.
"Put the guns into our hands and we will use them. Give us the slogans and we will turn them into realities. Sing the battle hymns and we will take them up where you left off. Not one not ten not ten thousand not a million not ten millions not a hundred millions but a billion two billions of us all the people of the world we will have the slogans and we will have the hymns and we will have the guns and we will use them and we will live. Make no mistake of it we will live. We will be alive and we will walk and talk and eat and sing and laugh and feel and love and bear our children in tranquility in security in decency of peace. You plan the wars you masters of men plan the wars and point the way and we will point the gun."

Anyone ever read it? Any other suggestions for a good read?

A good read to be sure. Have you read Phillip K. Dick?

Bucknub 05-18-2006 12:11 AM

*waits for machette to say he read it 5 times*

Anti-war ?

The last paragraph is basically your main character saying "I AM A PAWN AND WILL MOVE AS YOU SEE FIT".

I'm confused?

its an anti-war type book, its really good i read it last year. best book i have read and i dont like books. it is a very different perspective on life/war. good read.

Metallica - One

I'll just watch the video instead of reading the book. biggrin:

"He is the armless, legless wonder...of the 20th century!"

Nope haven't read it but I've heard of it. The guy who wrote it was a hollywood screenwriter, I know. Read some paragraphs in other books. Seems interesting though. If I could find it here I'd buy it but the bookstore carries only the latest books in the market. Only anti-war novel I've read from WW1 is All Quiet on the Western Front.

Jin-Roh 05-18-2006 09:47 AM

yeah, read some of it. Pretty good book, but not that great.

yea, Dalton Trumbo, he was blacklisted during the communist accusations.

and yes, Metallica- One is about the book.

and before you judge the main character of the book, solidus, i suggest you read the novel. he makes no contradictions in the novel, my description does not do the book justice.

the ;ast paragraph of 1984 was the same, its probably related to a theme of indoctrination or summat. Meant to be fasicious (sp)

Well, humorous or not, it risks conveying the wrong information. happy:

See the film.

You won't ever even consider picking up a gun and going to war. Eeriest shit ever. Changed my life, horrible thing to envision ever happening to you or someone you care about.

ever try ebay for your books? they have some them selling for pretty cheap....

Machette 05-18-2006 07:27 PM

Don't have a account. When I buy used books it's from some small store in st catherines. Impossible to find the books you are looking for because its not organized. Interesting place though, literally books from the floor to the ceiling.

Books are usually always better than the movie. The book was extremely moving and powerful. I want to see the movie though.

So? The movie impacted me enough to post what I posted. Take from that what you will, I never read the book....and until you can read the book in an hour and a half/two hours, I'm not going to bother because I know what happens.

i think you took my post the wrong way, i didnt mean for it to seem hostile or insulting...i will definitely check out the movie, but if you ever need a good book to take up time...this is the one.

Because I always state that in my post don't I? ffs I argued with TGB on this. If you truely believe I carry that attitude that's your own position. I, in no way attempt to place myself a step higher than any other individual I know. When I talk to my friends I don't tell them my latest test mark or the latest novel I read. Did I clarify enough for you or do you want some more? Just goes to show that old statement is still applicable - never judge a book by it's cover.
