Saw in on the FS website for $600 CDN, which to me seems pretty good. $200 off for the next 2 days.

Current monitor is a 19" CRT, so if I go with this i'll be upgrading to DVI. I think i've heard of probs with getting 1680 x 1050 resolution with AGP cards. I've got an x800 AGP, but hopefully i won't run into any probs. I'd probably want to use a DVI-D cable, right?

The idea is to then turn it into a HDTV as well. I would have to get either a cable box or TV tuner to do this, but I will look into that later.

sweet, i have a 19" LCD, and would never ever go back to a CRT moniter!!!!

edit: dont get a LCD moniter if it has the glossy screen protection, way too much glare

gtboys34 07-11-2006 02:30 PM

i have a dvi input on my monitor, should i use it? is it really that much better than vga?

Arch 07-11-2006 02:48 PM

dvi is digital i think, but if remember correctly vga is better, not sure.

I have a 21" LCD. I hate it because it doesnt have a high resolution, and it doesnt display lines very well. I haven't mapped in so long because of this.

Miscguy 07-11-2006 07:14 PM

Thats why you cant cheap out on monitors. I always check the max rez when looking because its typically what i'll end up running windows at. Im fairly certain that next year i'll be getting a 21" widescreen. Right now my 19" crt is working fine and i have no real excuse to replace it.

I have a question:

I'm pretty sure I want to go with this monitor. I don't forsee a problem hooking it up to my computer. It will run at 1680X1050 or whatever.

What I want to do is also set it up for TV, infact HDTV.

Now I assume there are a few ways I can do this:

1) Internal tuner in the computer
2) External tuner
3) Cable box

I don't have a cable box and don't really want to go through that whole hassle. I'm content with the channels I get now. I did find this on the gateway website:

[url=http://accessories.gateway.com/AccessoryStore/Consumer+Electronics_381930/Digital+TV_381941/Digital+Television+Accessories_375698/12684996_ProdDetail?http://accessories.gateway.com/AccessoryStore/Consumer+Electronics_381930/Digital+TV_381941/Digital+Television+Accessories_375698/12684996_ProdDetail:acf3d]freraking long link[/url:acf3d]

So it says res up to 1280 x1024 resolution, which i don't think is a standard HDTV resolution, but that would be high res, wouldn't it?

What I'm asking I guess is with that box, can I set up HDTV with the HDTV LCD gateway monitor? looks like it only takes s video and composite, which means that it probably would be totally high def, right?

Anyone know of other high def tuners that I could use for this purpose?

Arch 07-11-2006 07:45 PM

My pc came with a tuner installed, the monitor can handle 1680x1050 even higher, and can have s-video, composite, vga, dvi (best to use for hdtv imo) and mostly everything else. I use media center to watch t.v on it, on the hdtv channels it looks pretty fucking amazing, dvds are awesome too. Oh and if you decide to get a tuner all you have to do is plug in the cable that's it also i suggest getting dscaler, it's a pretty good program to watch t.v on the p.c. and it's free, just google it. Hope that helps

ninty 07-11-2006 07:55 PM

i just remembered that i don't get any hd channels unless i order them, and to order them i have to have a digital cable box. so i guess my only option for watching actualy hd channels is to order a cable box through the cable company and hooking that up to the monitor.

also, i would hook up the computer to the monitor using the dvi cable. so with that used up, i wouldn't be able to use the dvi slot from the cable box to the monitor, whould I? i'd have to go with s video or composite. so i would probably have to use s video or something on the computer and dvi for tv, right?

Arch 07-11-2006 08:29 PM

connect your p.c to your monitor with vga and for tv i suggest connecting your cable box with the dvi, it's digital so you might need to have the digital set boxes.

Judas 07-11-2006 08:48 PM

why are these fuking things limiting resolution?

now i'm thinking of just going a step up to the dell 2407

http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Produ ... v=&Browse=

I mean, i'm spending $600 for gateway with shitty warranty, so i'd have to buy extended warranty from FS for $120, so $720 or spend $999 and get a 24".

Decisions decisions...

went and picked up the gateway 21".

only prob i see so far is the right side of the screen is darker than the rest. not that big of a deal. i'm gonna go to costco and see what they have there too. i'm pretty happy with the monitor here, but if I find something better, i'll take this one back. It is beautiful though.

haven't tried it with any games yet though.
