People only call me wigger to get on my nerves, you're the real deal. You listen to what those "annoying, faggot wiggers" listen too. Gay-Z's part of the reason why its still so hard to market decent rap music, because the idea that gangsta/pimp rap is the only way to sell records has been reinforced by idiot 10 year old white kids who keep on buying this shit to join the wigger army. Good rap IS marketable, judging by how many people I know or have met that are suprised when they hear it. |

That kind of rap is like wrestling. It's fake as hell, nothing but an image is being sold. |
I don't see how you can say he's the reason people can't get out.
The STATES owns hip-hip...and from talking to people from the states...people HATE Jay-Z and Nas now...so how can they be holding back the rest? 99% of Emcee's in the entire world wish they could drop an album like Reasonable Doubt or the Blueprint. I don't see how having confidence is a bad thing...guy is cocky...honestly...he's probably the only one in rap music with the success to be cocky...guy went from nothing to president of def jam...pretty good if you ask me. Puffy is another one...but Puffy is only relevant cuz of biggie. Not everything mainstream is terrible...the best msuic listeners...are the ones who can appreciate both the underground and mainstream...even if you decide to like more of one than another. People latch on to one or another and thats why mainstream doens't see underground come out...and the ignorance of backpackers is ALSO a factor in why there music is never being heard. Fuck if your leg broke bitch, hop up on your good foot |

The industry of making hiphop music for money is a whole other industry, not to mention a joke. It's like listening to a well-tailored advertisement for Clothes, Cars, Fine Liquor and Prostitutes. It's ridiculous watching you try to defend it. Quote:
That's fucking hilarious. You're totally full of shit...You expect me to believe this crap? The blueprint....? ROFLMFAO. The emceeing on that album was fucking pisspoor compared to Reasonable Doubt, and even that is barely a classic. I guarantee the only way that any emcee would agree with that statement is if you were talking about the money he made off of the albums, from sucking in the popular market which listens to such terrible music anyway. The people that control what gets played go by a strict format, only giving true originality a chance if it is structured perfectly for the market. To do that, you have to tailor your music a certain way, which means either learning the ways of the industry, or becoming your record producer's bitch in terms of creative control. Quality of emceeing simply doesn't sell rap anymore....I don't even know why they call it rap. Eminem was the last truely skilled emcee, and he only got popular because he was white, and it was interesting. [quote="Jay-Z":01364]I don't see how having confidence is a bad thing...guy is cocky...honestly...he's probably the only one in rap music with the success to be cocky...guy went from nothing to president of def jam...pretty good if you ask me. Puffy is another one...but Puffy is only relevant cuz of biggie.[/quote:01364] That's not confidence, that's arrogance. Look at the way it is exerted. hundreds of songs about how cool someone is gets old. Seriously appreciating music like that means respecting the rapper who is talking all this shit - That is a little hard to do when all they talk about is how good they are, or all the shit they have, and someone who will drop the music they actually love for the benefits of being a popular artist - Which is cash. Have you noticed how its only popular rap that is arrogant? It's because it sells to the stupid kids who eat this shit up. People that want his image of mysogynistic drug-dealing arrogance. Quote:
It's not a debate about underground v.s mainstream, its a debate about what has happened to mainstream in the last ten years....A.k.a, Its demise in terms of quality and originality of subject matter. Popular rap is fucking boring....and its a recruitment tool for stupid kids who get off on the rebellious nature of it. One big fucking advertisement. |

Its clear to me I have a far better grasp on the industry than Pyro does, simply because I read more and am more involved in the online community than he is, because I am what some would consider a freak when it comes to my interest in the genre and culture. Oh, and by the way, Shut the fuck up, you obviously don't know fuck all about this so why get involved? Oh yeah, that's right because you're a rolly-polly dumb as fuck little cunt who plays grab-dick with your best boyfriend in the whole wide world for your daddy who takes pictures of it. Is this actual Hip-Hop discussion? It sounds more like just Jay-Z bashing. And insulting people for having their own opinions, even if their opinions aren't that great.

I just moved the thread in here with a random name, because it didnt belong in a discussion about a sig. If the Mod's in here see it fit, they can change the topic.

I'm not gonna get into the techical side of this debate. Bottom line is what Nyck states. Listen to what you like.
I listen to some current rap even though i was brought up on Run DMC/Public Enemy/Whodini/BDP.... My stepfather taught me something a long time ago. He told me not to get locked into a single genre or decade of tunes. He told me to expand myself because it's all good, no matter what it is. You know what?, he was right. I now listen to just about anything.....from metal, classical, rap, blues and so on. |

As far as I'm concerned, this conversation is long over - I made my point with my last huge post, and Shawn's post following is just recycling his same beliefs that Jay-Z is one of the best emcees out there, which I believe is ridiculous and is pretty much his personal preference (so therefore useless to argue with).... Now random posters who have just come into this thread can harp on and on about just listening to what sounds good, but as soon as you start making comparisons and making up bullshit like shawn has then I won't back off in a debate when I disagree...Especially about hiphop, I have such strong feelings about the genre, I love it to pieces and I also hate the fucking shit out of what one side of it is doing to my generation. I also dunno who you're all talking to when you're telling us to listen to more than one genre - because I know I, and I believe Shawn as well (But not Bucknub, who obviously doesn't do "the dig" for his music) listen to a wide variety of different genres. So don't even start with that. P.s - Shawn, you should expand your tastes in hiphop, because those lyrics are really nothing special at all compared to other, more interesting stuff out there. That's really boring shit you posted in terms of quality of emceeing. ...and yes, M79, I was trying to have a discussion on what Jay-Z and others like him have done to hiphop, but it clearly went over Shawns head as he just rebuttled with a post regarding his weak lyrics and nothing to reply with regarding the guy's place in the genre. GAY......Z. <- If that heats you up, you need to go to a clinic and tell them you have obsession issues. Buckface, I'm looking in your direction. |
Lately I have been listening to Dead Prez. Almost every song they have is just so good... their song Hip Hop is KEY. Im seeing Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace, and RA the Rugged Man on September 22nd @ Higher Ground in Burlington VT (like 10 mins away from my college). Ill let you guys know how that goes!

I know so many people that say they're rap listeners, their favourite artists either Nas, Jay-Z, 50 cent etc, and yet I can't have a conversation about rap with them because they've never heard of any of the artists I listen too. They generally end up liking it because its so much more accesible than the bullshit pop rap which is confined to one subject matter which is criminal/violent/testerone/money fuelled rap. Pop hiphop has been dominated by this same boring subject for about a decade now, and its fucking jumped the shark, its boring, unoriginal and needs a kick in the ass to get going without this played out image - Its gone on so far past its use-by date that its becoming less and less like actual music and more and more like wrestling. All this dissing, all this hating shit - Its all just a ploy to sell records, Jay-Z vs Nas was just a glorified Hollywood Hogan Vs Someotherpencilneckedgeek with a soundtrack, and all these people buy into it and go on and on about the quality of the music, and how awesome it is. If 50% of the non-pop rap guys were given a chance they would sell just as well, if not far better, because the same guys I talk to that hate rap and just dont like it, are the same guys that get into alt/underground/backpacker rap or whatever you want to call it. The state of rap at the moment is unlike any genre...Its like a fucking conspiracy. I'm sick of turning on the radio, the tv, going to stores and hearing this shit, and not hearing ONE good song out of the millions that there are out there. I'm also sick of the general public not even knowing about an entire genre of music that is overshadowed simply be the refusel of, god knows who, to accept SUB-GENRES in rap. Rock accepts them. Jazz accepts them. Every other genre has recognized sub-genres...But hiphop is hiphop, and rap is hiphop. ....And so apparently Jay-Z is the same kind of music as Jurassic 5? Or the same kind of music as Five Deez? Or People Under The Stairs? Or MF Doom? That's like saying The Beatles are the same as Cannibal Corpse. It has no other name accept RAP/HIPHOP. So you're to assume the ones that are the most popular are the best in the genre. So basically Jay-Z is the best in rap? Ridiculous. Absolute fucking bullshit. phew....tripe rap/hiphop monthly hiphop schpeel version38392.124824 |
I really do agree with you tripper, there are a thousand sub-genres to rock that people listen to, plus their are radio stations dedicated to that sub-genre. I gurantee you if i went up to a hardcore "rap" lover, and i asked him if he knew who Jurassic 5, or People under the stairs, or MF Doom were,, they would probably look at me like i was a fucking retard.
