You're right. The weather here is really extreme. We go from one end of the scale to the other. In the winter it can get down to -40, -50, but usually does only once or twice the entire winter. And it usually only lasts for a day or two.

Most of the time during the winter i'd say it's between 0-32F, which isn't that bad.

-50 isn't that bad either, you just have to dress for it.

Today the cold snap ended and it got up around freezing and the snow on the roads started melting and now its slush everywhere.

In the summertime, we can get up to 35 or 40C which is probably around 90-95F at the max. So we go from -50F to +90. Big temp swing.

I've lived here all my life so i'm used to it.

In addition, Calgary is one of only 2 places in the entire world that get Chinooks. so a few times per winter we get huge warm temps. It can get up to +10C for a couple days. So you always know there is a Chinook around the corner when it's -50.

Milla 11-30-2006 08:40 PM

What in gods name is a Chinook? I know its a helicopter but what else is it

well it was named after the chinook indian people, but basically it has to do with the winds and how they come over the mountains. high and low pressure and all that jazz and basically bring in warm air and pushes the arctic air back north.

I think in southern alberta and chile are the only places in the world where it happens.

If you look at the clouds during a chinook, you'll see the chinook arch which is actually pretty amazing. You'll see a wall of clouds that just suddenly stops in a straight line. half of the sky is cloud, the other half is perfectly clear.

kinda like this but this isn't a very good view:

Ohhhh. I thought you just knew it was 'a' helicopter, not knowing what made it different. You meant where does the name come from.

I think it's colder today than it was yesterday. It says -37C for tomorrow morning. That's without the windchill. Would probably be like -50C or so with windchill.

Nyck 01-29-2008 10:07 AM

45 F here right now in michigan...it snowed and was cold all weekend

ninty 01-29-2008 10:11 AM

Maybe this will make me feel better. It's 242 kelvin! A warm 242 degrees away from absolute zero!
