Hand Cramping When Playing Bass

As most of you know by now, I'm a bass player and while playing a show on Saturday night my right hand (pick hand) began cramping up like a motherfucker around the third song.

It started paining right in the fleshy part of my thumb, on the palm of the hand. I could hardly hold on to the pick and at a couple of points I had to drop the pick and play with my fingers.

Please don't give me any bullshit about how "real" bass players play with their fingers...that's not going to help me.

Any advice (aside from ^ that) would be greatly appreciated. Do you guys have any warm-up exercises you could recommend? I jerk with my left hand, so that's not going to help either...

Thanks.

might be carpal tunnel... i really have no tips for warming up the pick hand.. i really only warm up my fret hand with scales and whatnot.

Coleman 02-26-2007 11:55 AM

This may sound very odd, but you could try to do some piano warm-ups. For our guitar methods class, they sometimes make us do piano warm-ups to loosen up the fingers and wrists. If you want me to explain in more detail I'll be glad to.

Zoner 02-26-2007 12:37 PM

From a musician's forum I frequent: "Sounds like you're holding your pick too tight. Tension leads to pain, and eventually, permanent injury. Learn to relax and not only will your pain go away, your technique will improve."

I think there may be something to what this guy said. It was our first official show and maybe I was clamping on the pick pretty hard due to nerves/adrenaline. I hadn't noticed too much cramping when we'd go through the whole set list in practice.

I'll try to drink more and relax...oh and stretch. Yes, stretch.

Milla 02-26-2007 12:39 PM

I was about to say that, stretch out. This is gonna sound funny but when we goto the shooting range for the Marines, if you haven't held the rifle in a while your hand cramps at your wrist from holding it funny for a hours. I usually stretch my wrist out prior to the range.

Paintballr 02-26-2007 12:47 PM

Ill ask the bassist in my band tonight at practice on what he does for warm ups and Ill post it on here for you.

Zoner 02-26-2007 01:17 PM

Thanks dude. I'd appreciate that. beer:

the damage that that guy is talking about is similar to writers cramp. It's a permanent form of nerve damage that can actually be remedied with botox injections in the upper arm. However, warm-ups and stretches will help prevent this. piano warm-up work really well, stiff-finger waves will help and also stress balls. I also might recommend warming up without using the pick This will also stretch out the muscles and tendons in your hands and fingers

i'd recommend warm-ups on the flesh flute, i can also explain in more detail if you want

BlackJackal 02-26-2007 02:17 PM

i've had the same exact problem before in the middle of a show and had to drop the pick and play with my fingers. the pain is mostly around my wrist, and that guy's right, relaxing the hold on the pick helps a lot

Proteus 02-26-2007 02:49 PM

Thread's over with what the other dude said. Just need to move the wrist more around the string rather than powering through it.

Ok well I just talked to him very shortly because we are heading to our place to practice but this is what he said Ill get more out of him once we get to the shed....

He said to one just look all over the web or create your own warm up exercise for both your pick hand and your fret hand. Start it about a hour before you play or really any time before hand just to warm you up.

He also recommended to bend your fingers back especially if you play with your fingers, but also to rub your knuckles and pop them and such. I told him about your hand cramping up during playing, he also said that it could be that ya you are holding the picks to hard/weird or wrong technique of holding the pick. He said he would show me "certain" ways to hold it and see if your holding it the right way or whatever. (I'm the drummer so I don't know much, but I can play guitar.)

You also might just be getting tired/stamina, drink a lot of water before a show just for the fact you are in front of a lot of people which=sweat and you can get dehydrated which=cramps.

But thats just basic stuff, I'll get more once I get to practice.

Also I'll try to find a link to it, but he has like a finger exercise tool he bought at a music store, and it helps build finger strength etc which will improve your fingers and such.

I told you, I jerk with the LEFT hand...the LEFT!

Thanks Paint...I've been toying with the idea of getting a Gripmaster for years.

I think at this point, I'll go with this:

1. Relax, for fuck sakes...I'm not playing Madison Square Gardens.
2. Warm up the right hand using a stress ball or those weightlifter grippy squeezy things (sorry if I'm getting too technical).
3. Stay hydrated...drink beer AFTER the show, water before.

If those things don't work, I'll give up and play the fucking spoons or something.

You need to add an 18 year old blonde masseuse to your rider.

No problem man, if the problem happens again, try to remember exactly where it hurts and what you were doing like notes and such and tell me and Ill ask my bassist some more questions.

It seemed to flare up when playing "A Hard Day's Night". I don't know if you recall our version of it from the videos I posted a while back, but we play it really chunky and heavy. Maybe I was just rockin' out too much and attacking the strings.
