jesus christ...36 years later

geRV 03-02-2007 01:50 PM

From what ive read this game has been drastically scaled down form what it was intended to be, all the elements that made it something that stood out have been seriously nerfed or removed totally.

I remember i posted a screen of this game years back with that funny looking m4 varient in it, ballisticwookie was still posting here so that shows how long ago that was. eek:

Akuma 03-02-2007 02:02 PM

Holy shit I forgot this game even existed. It looks terrible now.

mr.miyagi 03-13-2007 02:24 PM

PC Gamer UK has reviewed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and given it the score of 87%

Here is a couple of excerpts:

It's best described as a first-person shooter/roleplaying game/ survival horror hybrid, in that order....the horror is the thing that underlines the whole game. It's what makes it work. It's what makes it different.

It's: Enormous, atmospheric
It's not: The hype, nearly as buggy as you'd expect, monster-stuffed

is it me or does that bloom lighting effect not look very good

geRV 03-13-2007 07:16 PM

I dont think the game in general looks very good based on screens, those cocks at fileplanet have yet to send me my multiplayer "beta" key despite the fact the games gone gold so how the fucks it a beta? oOo:

In the pic miyagi posted that hand\arm and gun look like something you'd expect the original half life engine to produce.

Looking for a replacement now, anyone know a good hard drive company? it'll only be for about 100-160 gigs in size cry:

this game is out in a couple of days but when I have my pc up and running again, i'll post my thoughts

ninty 03-14-2007 11:04 AM

seagate? western digital?

I think i've use WD hhd's all along and never had a problem.

I don't know if i will be able to run this game too well.

i dl R6 vegas, and i couldn't get past the opening loading screen. thats the first time i couldn't play a game on this rig.

Akuma 03-14-2007 11:05 AM

Seagate and WD are both great.

I prefer Seagate because they are bit quieter under full load.

Machette 03-18-2007 12:36 PM

That game used to look so good, now it just looks like shit.

mr.miyagi 03-18-2007 02:16 PM

its not all about the graffix you video card whores! nvidia/ati have the wool over yer eyez

btw, i got a seagate barracuda drive, installed it last night, seems fine :)

The diehard fans have more than a few complaints, main one being co-op got screwed over and the features that made the game unique got striped out of it. This thing was meant to release around the same time as halflife 2 and in the 2 years since that they did nothing but cut features instwed of add them.

Back then the game was meant to be finished but they were granted mroe time to fix some bugs, in other words they didn't want to get bent over and get fucked by half life 2 sales. May 2005 was the release date and since that the games just been downgraded more and more, anything that made the game special has long since been removed. annoy:

mr.miyagi 03-19-2007 11:43 AM

everyone knows its not the game that was initially promised and thats been made public for years now. Some of the die-hard fans need to get a grip on real life for a second and just enjoy what they can from whats now still a decent game.
You can't please everyone...especially die-hard fans who you can NEVER please.
People take games far too seriously sometimes rolleyes:
I just play to have fun, be scared, be entertained....

Problem is what makes this game ANY different from every other run and gun shooter out there now? Absoloutely nothing. People may still buy it for the name but to me its not worthwhile anymore. It was at one time something unique, now its just a face in a crowd of clones.

Theres far too much of this these days, developers promising this and that and one by one the promised things get removed or changed or moidified in some way, game devs just seem to love fucking people over by sucking them in with hype then delivering nothing.

mr.miyagi 03-19-2007 12:48 PM

I suppose thats the way society is though I guess when it comes to selling products. Hype is such a vital tool in sucking people in and building up their hopes...
Thats why I've always rewarded dedication and original approaches to games where the publishers are as honest as possible.

Goin off-topic, stumbled upon this video, not sure if its new but I've not seen the footage elsewhere of Crysis. its named 2007 so it can't be too old.

Initial part of the vid we've seen but the 2nd half has some impressive visuals and physics http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=48761

This, imo, is going to set the new standard for FPS games, can't wait to play although I realise it will bring my current rig to its knees... annoy:

Gerv what video card you got? think my ati x850 256mb could run this baby? it should do........can't wait til some of the performance issues are ironed out.

maybe i should sell my ati and buy a better one, know of the best agp card thats cheap. ive been with ati last few years now, maybe a shift back to nvidia is in order...tho ati cards you seem to get more value for money, they last longer imo

ninty 03-20-2007 11:48 AM

x1900 pro agp miyagi. fastest agp out there. make sure you have 450w and 20a or more on the 12v rail

geRV 03-20-2007 12:10 PM

As ninty said fastest agp is the x1950 pro, though saying that ive been reading a lot of problems with certain versions all artifacting at stock clocks.

The "HIS 1950 turbo" apparently had or has a bug where the fan would only rotate at 40% so that left the card to cook hitting over 100c.

My cards an x1900xt crossfire edition, it'll do me till i can afford to get a new system. Ony reason ati cards seem to last longer is they've had manufacturing problems with the new cards, thats behind them now though and theyre meant to be launching them in may.

ninty 03-20-2007 12:39 PM

I had the sapphire version.

i read about problems with the vrm heatsink on the card. i wasn't having gpu cooling problems, but on occasion when i was messing around in ccc the screen would go blank and it would take a second to come back and say that the card stopped responding so the driver reset it or something.

i didn't want to have to deal with that and i didn't want to spend the $300 so i took it back. maybe i'll buy it when it's more stable and the price drops because it would probably give me a bit more gaming time.

Ferich 03-23-2007 07:51 PM

I've been playing this for a couple days and it's more or less exactly what I expected. More RPG elements, the ability to go prone, less loading screens, and a much better faction system for some depth would be nice but it's a pretty solid game.

The firefights are enjoyable since the AI is half-intelligent making it difficult even on easy. Groups of mutants or humans can communicate with eachother and attempt to outmaneuver you.

Exploring the large maps for items, whatever can be fun and you usually run into some type of trouble.

Graphic options on medium/high with a lag here and there.

mr.miyagi 03-26-2007 07:37 PM

yo Ferich, how is yours playing? theres a fix out for people havin lag. you able to run Dynamic lighting? I'm only on static lighting but everything is on max in advanced settings. Seems to run great now. I had initially had dynamic on when I first tried the game and could only run 1fps! but now I get about 40-50 with this tweak. If you haven't, use static lighting after pasting this fix into your file, its in Shared Documents:

(don't bother pasting in the initial binded keys, skip past those and try the rest downwards. also you can change the resolution at the bottom if need be)

Go into your User.alx file. It can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC

This game is fantastic, only just installed it an hour ago, where do you find the first weapons in the stalker campsite? I'd like to go exploring but I'm not gonna win any fights with a pair of binoculars....

geRV 03-26-2007 07:39 PM

You have a pistol that you can access after you talk to that wolf guy. Just scroll up or hit 2.

ninty 03-26-2007 08:05 PM

why is this game only $40 cdn? not that i'm complaining...

mr.miyagi 03-26-2007 08:25 PM

Not sure, bought mine for £17.99 which is a bargain, depends where you look. Other places are normal price.

shit its 2.30am and I wanna keep playin. Gerv, you running it on max dynamic settings? the lightning looks damn nice and I only have it on static too

geRV 03-26-2007 09:41 PM

Havn't really mesed with it much, so far the performance seems to be pretty jumpy in places.

Miscguy 03-26-2007 11:01 PM

Since Crysis was mentioned, i just felt like saying... This will be the second time crytech has made me upgrade my PC, and i was not let down the last time. This looks to be 10x's the awesome, and im tempted to jerk off to the screens. Basically im going to pay whatever i need to hardware wise, to play crysis with all the eye candy on.

mr.miyagi 03-27-2007 10:49 AM

crysis is the game everyone is waiting for, I think its going to be the next step up in gaming.

As for Stalker, new patches released today, many many fixes (about 60+):

Get the U.S patch here:
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/STALK ... ONLY;77220

or NoN-U.S here:
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/STALK ... Wide;77221

Note: this patch wipes your save games. I've only just started so suits me fine.

Off into the Zone I go dance:

edit: the patch fixed a sound issue I was having, WOOP! rock:
