Zoner's Metal Review

So, I ventured out on a school night to see a little low key concert at the local civic center.

Down: Unbelieveably cool. Anselmo has great stage presence and rapport with the crowd, getting everyone off their asses early. Pepper Keenan is pure fucking hard rock...awesome. Rex reminds me of Steve Buscemi in Airheads for some reason...haw! Awesome opener from a band I really like, but no one knows of.

Megadeth: Probably the most flawless, best sounding set I've EVER seen. Mustaine was more jovial than I'm used to seeing him and SO on his game it was scary. The Drovers were outstanding, especially the guitar player. Their bass player needs a smaller guitar tho...he uses this big old Explorer-style bass that, again, makes him look like Buscemi in Airheads. I coulda listened to them all night. 'deth's set was: Sleepwalker, Wake Up Dead, Hangar 18, A Tout le Monde, Symphony of Destruction, Tornado of Souls, Washington is Next, Peace Sells, Holy Wars...might've missed one or two there. I hope they come back.

Heaven & Hell: Make no mistake, this is Black-fucking-Sabbath. A pure master class in heavy. It was hard to follow Megadeth, to be honest. The songs are so much slower and chuggy, that it had a more laid back feel. They were fuckin' awesome though. The whole set up was pro, pro, pro. The backdrops, the lighting, the sound...oh the sound! I didn't use earplugs all night. It was loud, but not painful. Pristine. We sat down for some of the show, but it was not a sign of boredom. Just had that "chill and soak it all in" vibe. Geezer's right hand amazes me.

If you get a chance to see this tour, GO SEE IT! rock:

agreed

As for the concert you went to Zoner, never was a fan of Megadeth. I guess its that their ballad shit gets over played.

Zoner 03-29-2007 01:59 PM

Oh dude...don't base it on the slower tunes.

Hearing "Hangar 18" live almost ripped my face clean off.

Lance_B@ss_Pwnz 03-29-2007 02:44 PM

I am going on may 5th, but we have machine head instead of down.

Zoner 03-29-2007 02:56 PM

Awesome. "The Blackening" is fucking amazing...probably THE metal record of 2007

I can tell ya, after recently seeing both Megadeth and Metallica live, that the current Megadeth show blows the current Metallica show out of the water. Hands down. No comparison. Maybe in 1988, the scales (of justice?) would have been tipped in Metallica's favor, but not in 2007.

Now, I like a lot of the newer Metallica stuff. It's not like I jumped ship after "...And Justice For All". I loved St. Anger. But I gotta say, when I saw Metallica live two things struck me: 1) They rely WAY too heavily on heart-stopping pyro. It got annoying after a while; and 2) They seem a little (i.e., a lot) pretentious; it was almost like they were thinking "Man are you guys ever lucky to be seeing us play live right now".

I didn't get that from Megadeth. I know Mustaine has a HUGE ego and can be difficult, hence the reason for the revolving door at the lead guitar and drummer spots over the years. He really looked like he was enjoying himself and was thankful for the crowd response (which was huge).

I'd pay double to see Megadeth again. I'm not too sure if I would for Metallica.

elstatec 03-30-2007 06:53 PM

think megadeath are the only band out of the classic rock/metal band era that i have not seen.

but im going to donington again this year and so far i will be seeing;

Megadeath, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira and some others i forget.

Zoner 03-30-2007 08:09 PM

You won't be disappointed, manno.

I've seen all those bands but Killswitch and Chimaira. That'd be an awesome show...I've always wanted to go to Donington. rock:

elstatec 03-30-2007 08:31 PM

come then! last year the riots were simply unmissable along with the riot police. and the bin men.

only thing is im betting megadeath will be playing during the early afternoon which would suck.

Gonzo 03-30-2007 10:56 PM

zone, i cant see how you can say megadeth is better than metallica live. ive seen each a couple times. and metallica was much better.

Lance_B@ss_Pwnz 04-01-2007 12:30 PM

Akuma 04-01-2007 07:38 PM

I disagree.

Zoner 04-02-2007 10:31 AM

Yeah, I can't agree with that at all.
