Does it matter if you can't spell?

Kids these days can't spell. They have no idea what apostrophes are or what they're for. People struggle with simple words, like spelling lose as loose. And as for grammar, forget it.

But does it matter? With the advent of text speak, in 20 years time will conventional spelling be dead? Will English be officially abbreviated? Wat d u thnk?

Why should the little turds even bother to learn when examination authorities allow them to use 'text speak' in English exams? Apparently, it doesn't matter how you spell as long as you can get your point across. Pupils get extra marks for using proper English, but that's a bit arse-over-tit if you ask me.

Arkan 10-20-2007 10:34 AM

It matters if you can't spell or have bad grammar if you're trying to advance in your career. No one wants to advance a 2nd grader.

People usually come out with the excuse "im just typing on the internet so im not trying" or words to that effect. But you normally see people doing the same stupid shit over and over which suggests they probably havn't a clue in the first place.

Same as mobiles and texting people, normally if i text it'll be the way i type, then i get responses back that look like theyre typed in a fluent form of tard. I know people try and keep them short but sometimes ive honestly no clue wtf theyre trying to say.

Coleman 10-20-2007 11:15 AM

when people use "I would of", it pisses me off to no end! It's "I would HAVE!" Ha

geRV 10-20-2007 11:17 AM

Or my favourite "I could care less"

dr nein 10-20-2007 04:50 PM

We must not teach those kids proper English! That might involve holding them back a grade until they can pass the class and that would hurt their feelings. It also might make their parents angry and get the shit sued out of us if the student is black.

I laid into a Freshman in math class the other day. We were asked to write a paper(which I promptly did not) about a problem we had done in class. I read over his paper and came across a sentence starting with the word and. I don't know why but this pissed me off an I proceeded to call him a dumb ass and a brain dead moron.

Oh, and I still got a passing grade for the paper.

who tries to use proper grammar in a fucking math class? a "paper" about a math problem you did in class is clearly bullshit to begin with, I sure as shit wouldnt have used anything near correct grammar either. AND i would have called you a dumb ass for caring about it.

Zoner 10-22-2007 08:15 AM

Bad spelling is one of my biggest pet peeves. I mean, texting is one thing, but when you're writing reports or important correspondence, you can't not know that there's no "a" in "definitely".

ninty 10-22-2007 09:29 AM

One word i can not spell no matter how hard I try is definetley. Definetly. Definetley. I know there's no 'a' in it, but it's just one of those words for me.

I'm pretty good with most other words and grammatical structure of sentences, but I agree, this shit is butchering the English language. I wasn't aware that teachers were allowing students to hand in assignments in text speak etc. I would say right off the bat to my students if you hand something in written in leet speak, text speak or any other form of shorthand, I'm not going to read it and you automatically fail. That's just me though. I also wouldn't be showing an Inconvenient Truth in Science class. Movies are for lazy teachers, and it's even worse when the science is debatable.

My English is top notch

either way it's still by far the best language the word has ever seen.

Aren't you the one who always says "could of" and not "could've"?

Fluffy Bunny 10-25-2007 07:59 AM

Evenings chaps, managed to get in here from work, still waiting for the damn net in my new pad!

Is there a difference between Canadian English & UK English? I think I saw it somewhere on the web... I was under the impression that Commonwealth countries used the UK English tongue & not some bastardised Yankee version. ;)

ninty 10-25-2007 08:26 AM

It's kind of a mix between US and UK. Many Canadians feel compelled to spell most things in the Queens English with "u" like Colour etc.

Proteus 10-25-2007 02:20 PM

Exciting. If you're txting or using personal messages, it's ok to not know how to spell. If you get a job that requires you to know how to type and spell, it matters.

WOW INTERESTING.

Milla 10-27-2007 05:52 PM

Yankee English ftw. Down with the Queen!
