I was listening to a local classic rock station in the car and the DJ was like "if you happen to celebrate this certain day, 4/20, then we have some music for you coming up."

they went on about 4/20 without ever actually mentioning what it was, so i'm sure there were some people scratching their heads.

How long has this "4:20" gimmickry been in existance exactly?

according to a story on msn.com, since the 1970's when students in a califronia high school would leave school everyday and smoke pot around 4:20 pm. However, the movement increased largely due to the prevalence of 420 media (movies, etc) and reached its current form in the 1990's.
