Will today's "empires" collapse?

Well, just like in the past when old empires such as Roman, Byzantine, Persian...will countries like the US, Canada, UK, Russia collapse and become totally different pieces of land? Hmm...my wording seems very basic...need sleep :-?

[quote="Old Reliable":7acc7]YES![/quote:7acc7]

Lemme guess...Your bored. Should have at least made a poll that included afrodj13...jeeez

Sicilian_Summers 08-14-2002 08:57 PM

despite the numberous casualties i feel it was completely nesscessary. why? because it was the end of the war and the men who had seen their friends and brothers die in the bloody mahem that was the pacific theatre were actually seeing the light of hope for survival. with the drop of the atomic bomb, 18 year old GI joe from walla walla washington didnt have to make the drop on tokyo...somethign that would have cost hundreds of thousands of lives in the process, not only that it may not have been sucessful. however...the results were disasterous. we have seen what nuclear weapons can do when it comes to matters of fear...espically when they get in the wrong hands. its impossible, however, to completely trust anyone with a weapon of this power.

ninty 08-14-2002 08:58 PM

Ifyou account nothing else into your decision, then No.

Thousands of citizens were killed. A rule of war is to not kill citizens. So from that point, it was unfortunate and wrong. But when you look at the big picture, its questionable.

despite what was wrong or right it had to be done. it just had to

War is hell... Do what you have to do to get the job done. If the atomic bomb hadn't saved hundreds of thousands of Allied lives, then I would feel differently.

Old Reliable 08-14-2002 09:03 PM

Sorry guys changed the topic...got bored with the atomic bomb one and added a poll with your favorite man afrodj13!

Sniped 08-14-2002 09:04 PM

It's tempting to choose afrodj13, but I am going to go with "Yes". We will all die very soon, I can feel it :o

intrestedviewer 08-14-2002 09:06 PM

well the british bombed the hell out of the citizens of germany and germany bombed the hell out of britain, we bombed the hell out of japan. So you cant say the USA was the only one and that we are evil blah blah blah, besides we warned them before we droped the bomb, we told em to surrender or else, they didnt listed. Consequences of decisiones.

ninty 08-14-2002 09:06 PM

No.

The only way for them to collapse would be if something drastic happened. Like nuclear war or aliens invading etc.

Pyro 08-14-2002 09:06 PM

Well I think the the U.S.A has not reached it's peak as an empire.
This is how I it will go, Bush will invade Iraq, and make it the fifty first state. He will name it George E. and make Anna Nicole Smith governor.

Every one will be happy for years and years until we have sucked all the oil out of George. We will have a new president by this time, his name will be P. Green.
He was a war hero during the George Doesn't Like Saddam War. His supply ship, the USS Rusty Tubb, made a wrong turn and ended up in the Artic Ocean. The ship happened to be carring 200,000 tons of canned peas and engine oil to the front. Unfortantly winter approached and the the ship became encased in ice. They were out of food, the Captian was facing mutiny, but lucky for him he had a galley hand like Green. Green was sitting on the head one day thinking"We're out of food, all there is ice and peas. Then it hit him.
He made green pea soup. He saved his captian and his crews lives, he was hero. For three months they survived on his green pea soup, until a group of kayaker happened by and found them.
Any way to continue my story. Green left the service after the war and made a fortune with his company P Green Soup Corp.
His company slogan was one that had started on his ship during those long three months.

What'd ya have for breakfast?
PEA GREEN SOUP!
What'd ya have for lunch
PEA GREEN SOUP!
What'd ya have for supper
PEA GREEN SOUP!
What'd ya do all night
PEE GREEN SOUP!

Americans loved him. So he ran for President, promising two cans of P Green's soup in ever cupboard. He won in contested race againt Bow Wow.
Now to get back to the empire. Green seeing that George was running out of oil. Decided that the United States need to find another source of oil,(not so much for automobiles, but because it was the secret ingredient in his soup.) So green Invaded the rest of the world in search of oil, there was none to be found. No longer able to get there hand on his soup(people had been dumping it in their gas tanks for years, no one would eat that crap). rebelions started all over the world . And thus the Great United State Empire would end. P Green went into hiding with Elvis and was never heard from again.
Or maybe not.

Since when was Canada (great country, but don't make me laugh), the UK or Russia really an Empire? The only superpowers are the US and the EU. And yes, the latter will collapse, it already is, but not in a sense that it will fall down, just that everyone else is catching up.

Nice prediction there, Spark. :)

Star85 08-15-2002 06:34 AM

Did any of you notice one of the main reasons for the falls of the empires. The size. It is impossible to control so much land and defend it. We know what happened to Rome. They were so big the Huns walked right into Rome and destroyed them. Of course the,"I have more land I'm more powerful" view seemed to dissapear a bit. As long and you dont have to much land I think any empire can survive. Then again what makes an empire would be size.

ninty 08-15-2002 11:09 AM

What about tehchinese empire. their a superpower today and have been for many thousands of years.

FWB 08-15-2002 04:43 PM

I wouldn't consider the Chinese a superpower (and they certainly really haven't been one in the past). They may well emerge as one, but for now the only two really global forces are the US and the EU.

ninty 08-15-2002 04:45 PM

The European Union is a superpower?

Yep. An economy almost the size of the US, a more stable currency (for now :) ) and huge political clout, probably more so than the US. But that's really cutting things short.

There's actually a great article on how it's use of civilian power, as oppossed to military, fuels its superpower status, but I can't find it online. For those interested its called "Europe, the quiet superpower, is the equal of the US" by Harvard professor Andrew Moravcsik. It was published in Newsweek a few months ago.

intrestedviewer 08-16-2002 01:42 PM

i think empires or um big superpowers collapse because they start making big weapons, big heavy slow weapons. Take Spain. When it was allmighty it had huge gallions. These things were huge. Then came uh england with its small ships and guess what? in the end england beats em. How bout the third reich? BIg and better tanks. The king tiger tank didnt work in the west. they were so big and heavy they would get stuck and would get flanked. Big countrys shouldnt use big weapons angel:
