Im in post upgrade MOH crash hell, HELP!
 

Hi All,

This is a call of desperation, I have recently upgrade my motherboard and graphics card, the leadtek Nforce 415D and Leadtek Geforce 4 ti4200 graphics card, now every time I play MOH It randomly crashes out to the desktop, you can imagine the frustration when your in the middle of a clan match! cry:

My system:
Leadtek Nforce 415D motherboard
Leadtek Geforce 4 ti4200
512Mb DDR ram
Ibm harddisk
I have applied all patches to both the OS and installed latest nforce drivers, updated all bios's, damn ive tried everything from lowering the resolution to tweaking the nforce bios, nothing helps.

Any help pointers gratefully received.

This may be a long shot, but doesn't the nforce chipset have graphics built on?

If so make sure your disabling the one on the motherboard, as you stated your using an add-on video card

reinstall dx8.1 (dont remember if possible, but I think it is, hehe), and reinstall/upgrade to the latest DETENATOR drivers (detenators are for your ti 4200)

Im using the 415D version of Nforce that does not have the built in MX video, I am also running the latest detonator and have reinstalled directx and MOH and have also run a repair of XP, still it crashes out sometimes it may take two hours or more, other times within 10 minutes so I dont think its a heat problem, Im going to give it another week of tweaking etc.. and if it still does it then the board and graphics card are on there way back to whence they came.

Did you do a fresh install or just upgrade the os by replacing the motherboard / video ?

My just need a new install which is a pain but always the right way to go

Yep I was thinking along the same lines its just a big pain in the ass to completely reinstall the OS, Ill have ago at it later tonight, and I thought Friday evenings were for getting drunk etc............ :)

Pile anytime you have a new mobo you should reformat and re-install the OS.

That's a pretty good setup. You'll be happy once you reinstall....as long as the IBM deskstar doesn't fail biggrin:

I had my IBM drive for over 3 years, without knowing about that problem. Then all of a sudden I read an article on the net about people having problems with these drives and ban, Lost the drive. IBM was nice enough to replace it . I had so much faith in those drives.

Exactly what Normar said. You can't rely on your computer to boot/work properly if you retain the old BIOS settings in your HD, even if you loaded the new ones. Those old files still exist, this is why you should reinstall your OS whenever you replace a motherboard. Just don't forget to get the newest Detonator drivers, and DirectX drivers when you're done!

Problem now resolved, I tried formatting the drive and completely resinstalling everything, still the same problem, by the way bazooka joe bios settings are held on the chips on the motherboard/graphics card not on the hard disk. To solve the issue i did the following, the Cas latency on the board bios was set to auto, now i know my ddr memory was not on the recommended list for the board and suspected that it was being run to high so i set this to 2.5, since then I have been in crash free heaven angel:

Oddly enough, 2.5 should be auto!!! very strange that that perticular setting cleared everything up...

BTW, never skimp on memory...its probably the single most important component on a system!! You can see the headaches it can cause...now if you throw in some high quality memory, you can adjust your memory settings and increase performance signifigantly....

where can i find that CAS latency??

ALL FAILED.... i guess the CAS thing should work... just tell me where i can i set it from............

Strange if it is the auto setting on the nforce, all I can say is that since setting this manually the problem has dissappeared. E2 the setting on my board is under X-bios in the bios settings, so im not sure what this will be called on yours, but it should be in the same place as the cpu multiplier, voltage settings etc.....

but only can st it to 2 or 3... so i think i'll put it on 2...

by the way, is 2 slower or faster??
if it's slower, doesn't that mean my comp will slightly be slower whenever it tries to access the memory???

For an overview of CAS latency have a look at:

Bsically 2 is faster than 3, so I would try setting to 3. If this dont fix your issue then you'll have to look elsewhere m8.

2 is indeed faster then 3, much fast in fact, but if you are having problems you need to try 3 first!!

For reference, this setting is often under a heading called "advanced chipset features"

Memory settings like this are potentially very dangerous, so you should only play with them if you know what you're doing and are willing to accept the consequences. I've corrupted my registry on several occasions doing this...

well... i tried it, set it to 2, but.....
once i did, and restarted, the computer gave me a black screen... nothing happens... just the HDD light is lit...

i had to remove the little battery to reset the bios sets... now, i'm back to Auto again... am i doing something wrong?? all i did is to set it to 2... tho the DRAM thing was still set to auto...

That's what happens when you set your ram timings too aggressively...you pushed the ram past what it can handle. This is why its important to buy quality ram!!!

PS...be thankful all you had to do was reset the CMOS

u told me to try 3 first... well, what is 'auto' doing? set it either 2 or 3? or set it in between 2 and 3?
i mean, if i couldn't boot at 2, then i have to set it to 3, which is the only choice for 'auto', so, theoritically, there's nothing i can do, right?

Your guess is as good as mine as far as what Auto is. It's probably 3. It could be higher. It could be 2.5. What you could try is downloading sisoft sandra, and do the memory bandwidth benchmark when its set at 3 and when it's set at Auto, and see which one gives you a better (higher) score. Or they might be more or less the same.
