Great maps, but they're unplayable

I'm glad there are some cool looking maps out there but the ones we have on the aa.com server are just unplayable.

I have a pretty good gfx card (128mb GeF3 200ti O/Ced to ti500 speeds) and I get terrible FPS in St. Paul and Route d'nord.

I really don't think that these maps are worth playing.

What does everyone else think?

Zoner 09-04-2002 08:43 AM

I agree. My computer balks at most of the new maps. My FPS dips down to single digits in some places. It's sad, really because the maps are very well done. They're just resource pigs.

I like the Route d'nord map, it looks great and it's fun to play, but I only get about 30 or so FPS. The St. Paul map is ugly, it plays badly, and I only get about 20 max FPS. I say keep the the Route d'Nord map ditch St. Paul.

Ydiss 09-04-2002 12:50 PM

Gfx card isn't everything when it comes to FPS. You can have the best gfx card in the world but it won't make a difference if your CPU is poor.

As for the maps, I haven't played most of them. Do you get bad performance on mine?

Cyberdoc 09-04-2002 12:55 PM

Great.....

Heck no, Ydiss, your maps have been a blast to play. I know alot of the regs at aa.com feel the same way. Keep up the great work and keep me posted of up coming projects. Nice one, doc-

Akuma 09-04-2002 01:25 PM

'Downtown' its worst map on the aa.com server. It looks great but I only get 5 (fire fights) to 19 (just walking around) FPS. I was playing with Judas and he even said it was horrible.

Night Hawk 09-04-2002 02:02 PM

My system does fine on the new maps (xp 2100)
The only time i have problems is when i get on a 32 player free for all, then it gets choppy. I am running a GF2 ultra 64mb and have 1 gig of ram.

Try downtown. I garentee you'll get MUCH worse FPS.

nomar 09-04-2002 02:04 PM

Agree. Downtown also is an FPS killer.

No YDISS, no probs with your map for me.

I know, there are many factors that affect FPS, but generally, these maps are bad for anyone.

I have an adequate setup - XP Pro, 1.33 tbird, 640mb PC133, 7200 rpm drives, and the 128 mb vid card.

If anyone pulls the trigger near me with a machine gun in those 3 maps, FPS drops. I've seen it as low as 11 on Route dNord.

Akuma 09-04-2002 02:09 PM

Route is fine for me. I get about 20-30 which is playable. I dont remember St Paul so I cant say how it was.

I've played downtown with about 8-10 players and i didn't have any problems, but i did not have fps on, I'll have to check it.

General Tso 09-04-2002 02:35 PM

FUBAR

FUBAR absolutely raped my CPU -- and I couldn't see anything unless it was pitch dark outside. I don't miss it.

The only new map I've played is Route D'Nord, and that seems to work well. As for Crossfire, that is the smoothest custom map I've ever played. I enjoy smashing out each pane of glass, too.

Korvac 09-04-2002 02:45 PM

I have a 1.8GHz Pent.4, a GeForce 4, and a gig of ram, and I am still dipping into the teens on St. Paul. I am sure it must be completely unplayable for most people.

Bazooka_Joe 09-04-2002 03:00 PM

That's the problem with MOH: It's a system hog. Any other game dosen't require as much power as this one does. Just look at Jedi Outcast; great graphics, and you don't even need a P4 for it to run smoothly.

Akuma 09-04-2002 03:42 PM

I took 3 screenshots in Downtown. All standing in the same spot but facing different directions.

Notice as the FPS rise as you turn away from the center of the map.

Korvac that animated gif in your sig rules.

We had some good chat about St Paul in the server last night too. That map is so confusing. Stuff everywhere - a room with grass in it here, a stairwell here, a pond here, a ladder here, a gate here, a toilet in a hallway with no doors here, etc. That map makes no sense.

Ydiss 09-04-2002 06:13 PM

You lot are lucky, I only have a duron 700 and my FPS sucks on most maps in any situation that isn't a corridor. I get as low as 15 fps in the gardens on my own map and that's with no players.

The bridge is a nightmare.

I'm upgrading to an athlon shortly, though. God help the opposition then angel:

Glad everyone finds my map smooth to play. It does help that it is not a wide open map, though. I'd like to make more open maps but I'd have to use fog and it seems this is the evil of all map making for most players.

My next upgrade will be when they either:

A) Release the new AMD chip.
B) Perfect PC4200 DDR RAM, or PC-1200 RDRAM.
C) Incoporate ATA-133 HD's to the i850E and G chipsets.

Until one of those happen, my PC is staying put.

mmmm pc42000 ddr!

I don't think you'll see C happen. Serial ATA has put an end to ata133 development.

Night Hawk 09-05-2002 09:27 AM

Anyone play the new one, "Communications?"
I havent myself but I noticed the download is 9mb??!!

Zoner 09-05-2002 09:46 AM

I posted my thought about St. Paul in another thread. The map is absolutely horrible.

"Everyone was complaining of crappy fps. The map is a jumble of every single map element you could think of. There was everything from fiddles to projectors, haystacks to halftracks, and more. Players were getting stuck behind doors, tripping down poorly designed stairs, and generally running around a map totally confused.

I decided to wait out the last 5 minutes of the map by sitting in a corner of a tower. I was paralyzed by an FPS of 7-9. It was absolutely horrible.

It even garnered more complaints than Snowy Park"

Heh. So true Zoner.

BTW, I think it was a cello - not a fiddle. I like the sound of that: "haystacks to halftracks".

So the moral of the story is - RUDE - PLEASE GET RID OF ST. PAUL!

Downtown too!!!!!

Oldguy 09-05-2002 03:19 PM

I was in with Zoner last nite and i have to agree, "St Paul" is not a good map. Everything is a jumble and too close together and it does kill the FPS. ... The other new ones weren't too bad , we all need a little more time to get used to them.

rudedog 09-05-2002 06:38 PM

Sorry guys, about the bad maps. wanted to get some fresh stuff up there.

Like I said in the other thread, will be removing st. Paul . Have not had a chance to play it yet but if you guys say its not worth it , then who am I to argue

I will be removing st paul and snowy park. did not mean to have snowy park up there this long but I keep forgetting the map number and I'm so damn busy with work.

Tonight I will be removing those maps. I was looking forward to downtown but if many of you think that's too CPU intense I will remove that as well.

some times I take for granted my computer and do not think of other systems when upping maps. Sorry guys.

Oldguy 09-05-2002 07:48 PM

Like I said, also in the other thread , we're not complaining, since the maps are brand new and we know you don't have the time to check all this stuff out we were just providing our personnel opinons of them. No need for you to apologize Rude . St paul was the worst for me , the other's looked interesting and didn't run too bad on my PC and I don't have a ultra fast machine (1.1g athlon , 512 ram) or vid card (geforce 2 ultra , 64m). And I don't really hate snowy park either. biggrin:

C20H25N3O 09-05-2002 07:53 PM

my Computer is not too good, just some crap i picked up on the "strip"

Well fine its a Best Buy Original, VPR matrix.

1.7ghz p4, 256 ddr ram, GF2 MX

and well that all sucks, i know, but thats what u get for 1000 in aprial.

Anyway, i avg about 50-99 fps, generally leaning in the higher end of the spectrum.

I have grown acustom, and actualy liking having everything turned all the way dowm.

Now the liking of the new maps is a differn't story, a story in which i have little opinon. Some i've liked, but for some reason i always seem to have the most fun on Stock Maps for some reason.

Wow, that MUST be bad. LOL (you all know my opinion about Snowy Park).

Rude, I just want to say thank you for uploading fresh maps. I personally was bored with some of the others. However, I haven't seen any of these maps, so I'm indifferent. Well... There was one map I saw tonight that I wasn't crazy about which was Trench...(can't remember whole name). It just seemed WAY too small. But the change is nice, anyway.

rudedog 09-06-2002 05:17 AM

No problem guys, I just want you all to know I value all your opinions. When I asked BS to let me name the server after AA.com. I was under the condition, I did it for our members.

I have removed st paul, I had good timing last night and jumped in to let people know I was removing the snowy park and st paul. Well I got a chance to play st paul only for a few minutes, and I had to agree with you guys, It was not a very enjoyable map.

Keep letting me know what you like or dislike, the only thing I will not change is =CRK=

Also please let me know if you have seen a good map. Send me a link and I will check it out. I am currently awaiting a new map with working tanks, jeeps and halftracks based on the hidden single player map. Could be interesting. The Author should be releasing it soon.

nomar 09-06-2002 08:06 AM

It's been hard to tell how these new maps are because there haven't been that many people the last few nights. But it was obvious for St. Paul!

We noticed last night that you can hide inside tanks that are on fire on the Trench. That would be a lame camping spot that I'm sure people will exploit. Also, you can walk right through the flak and rocket launcher. But I think that it's a cool map.

Downtown would be very cool but it's kind of a resource hog too.

We talked a while ago about Prado and Hitler's farm. Any reason why you haven't used these maps on the server Rude? They are quite fun.

Oldguy 09-06-2002 02:55 PM

No one wants you to remove CKR , LOL , we're all so used to it none of us can play stock anymore. biggrin:

General Tso 09-06-2002 03:14 PM

Final Stalingrad

The Final Stalingrad 2 map looks incredible...I am ready to be owned on it soon!
